DUUUUUUUUUUUDE. This is the best idea EVER. 300 words or a sketch not on lined paper. Plus the ability to write treats. Sign-ups through January 7th.

Okay, I'm at work, and technically in the middle of a work sprint (in which I have so far gotten Starbucks and lunch and looked at [community profile] fandom_stocking) but THESE THINGS NEED TO BE SAID.

1. TEAM VELOCIRAPTOR GOT INTO THE GISHWHES BOOK - TWICE! :D :D :D I will post pics eventually, but I am SO EXCITE! Especially cause there's a picture of my mom in one of the entries. :)

2. [community profile] fandom_stocking is live! Submit your stocking here. Fandom stocking is one of my great, fannish, winter loves. It's brilliant. I'll be writing my stocking tonight and then starting to look for stockings I can fill.

3. SPN midseason finale tonight. I have a bad feeling my Sam feels will be engaged to the nth degree.

4. Work is... interesting. More on that later, maybe.

5. ??? What's up with you, dwircle?
kate: Charlie from Supernatural grinning (SPN: Charlie profile happy)
I have no idea if Supernatural folks do this, but I like to write letters, and I cribbed most of what I wrote from my last sign-up anyway, which is what I'm going to do with this letter. So here you go.

I like to talk... a lot. )

My sign-up for posterity. )
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
I think it's safe. *weary smile*

There was a thing. It's not a thing I'm going to talk about because I just... ugh. I don't want to. But suffice it to say, people found me, and there was wankiness (not RL people, have no fear), and I needed to get away for a little while. Now I have the dreary task of un-friendslocking appropriate posts, which just sucks. I'll get to it eventually, but it's not something I'm interested in doing right now.

So on top of the thing, there's been a work thing. I was working at client #1, and client #2 (an old client of mine that was convinced they would implode if they could not have me back (I'm not kidding)) convinced my bosses that they needed me.

So, I was informed on a Friday that on Monday, the dude at client #2 and I would spend 2 days at client #2, where he handed over all his work to me (dumping 26 grants on me the week before a deadline was a massive fucking clusterfuck) and then we would spend 2 days at client #1, where I trained him on all my work (which, uh, took roughly an hour, and I spent the rest of my days pulling my hair out while I tried to do everything I needed to do for those 26 grants at client #1 (and which dude had fucked up massively, so I had to re-do all of his work)). It was a shitty week. And because it's deadline season, it just kept coming for the next six weeks. The last major deadline is Monday, and then I should be able to concentrate on my big projects and be ready to roll off at the end of March.

Also, tumblr. I have all kinds of things to say about it, but when people are like: it's totally mindless and easy, you just scroll down all the pretty pictures... yeah. That's pretty much it. It's really easy on my very tired brainmeats. I've spent some time cultivating my dash, so it's mostly stuff and/or people I like, so that's good. I'm on the very edges of SPN wank, so I hear about it but I don't get involved in it. Blocking posts is a beautiful thing, as is blacklisting. I'm kisahawklin over there if any of you would like to find me - but if you follow me and aren't into SPN, be sure to blacklist the supernatural tag. I will ALWAYS tag because OMG untagged posts make me want to claw my eyes out. (I am SO SPOILED for the back half of this season I could scream.)

ION, I am writing okay. Plenty of words ahead of my goal for the year, though I need to stop writing tags for my last bang and get working on my next one.

How's things, dwircle?

So I got about 90% of his panel on video. I'll upload it, but with the shitty wifi here in the hotel, it'll likely take me all night, or maybe until later in the week. If worse comes to worst, I'll upload it when I get home on Thursday.

When you see this, share 3 random lines from 3 WIPs. And I'm going to take "lines" to mean "paragraphs" because that's how I roll.

Ah, what the hell. Two Supernatural epics and that one RPF I said I was gonna do.

1. "And I didn't realize Sam was Sammy."

Dean laughs, the tension leaving him in a rush and he picks up another box to go digging for coffee mugs. "Big brother's prerogative."

He pulls out a pair of mugs, glancing at Dave with a grin. The look of relief on his face is comical, and Dean would chafe at being thought of as Sam's boyfriend except he's chafing at the fact that the dude thinks anyone who had Dean at home would bother to cheat on him.

2. "What's up?" Misha asks, and Jensen looks over at him, too tired to try and figure out what he's talking about. Misha wrinkles his forehead in his "I'm concerned" face and says, "You've been moping all day. Something on your mind?"

Jensen frowns and Misha puts his hands up. "Okay, not moping, fine, if you don't want to talk about it."

Jensen rolls his eyes. Honestly, Misha is the worst.

3. Cas nods. "You don't need to drink or eat, either, but I imagine those habits will be harder to break."

Sam sets the beer down, sighing. There's no point in drinking if he's not even going to get a buzz.

"I, on the other hand," Cas says with a sudden, huge grin that makes him look younger than Kevin, "am what Dean calls 'a lightweight.'"

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've done a lot of recs over the course of the fest, so I think here I'm just going to rec three vids that bring me great joy.

I Need a (Supernatural) Hug, a vid about Sam and Dean hugging by [livejournal.com profile] ash48.

This vid just makes me grin so big. I love it so so so much. Probably because jeez, if anybody in the world needs a hug, it's the Winchesters.

My Brilliant Idea, McShep vid by lim (who has wonderful wonderful MCU vids, too).

This vid! OMG seriously, it is my very favorite McShep vid EVER. It is SO GOOD and SO PERFECT and SO THEM. I love them so much, and the song just makes me fucking laugh, EVERY TIME. I love it.

Parachute, Parker/Hardison/Eliot vid by [personal profile] thingswithwings.

This is such an amazing vid. It is so perfectly blocked and paced and makes me just so happy every time I watch it (and I rewatch it ALL THE TIME). It is the perfect reduction of canon I have ever seen and just so so so happy-making.

[personal profile] jenna_thorn wrote a delightful Losers piece called spam folder, where Aisha doesn't kill Jensen, and is friends with (if I've caught my reference correctly), Natasha Romanov. :D :D :D :D The Losers and MCU, two great tastes that taste great forever.

Art, photos, icons, banners

Gorgeous snow photos from [personal profile] sarajayechan. I loooooooooooooooooove snow, so these were really awesome - like this one:

Five smiley icons, also from [personal profile] sarajayechan, mostly Avatar: the Last Airbender (and Korra), which is BRILLIANT! I need lots more smiles on my journal, so I am thrilled to get these.

A Groot Happy Holidays Banner! Oh, and a link to Dancing Groot, if any of you haven't (I don't know how, but I suppose it is possible) seen it. GROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!

Oh man. This is always a tough one for me because I really love everything. I read very widely and I enjoy most tropes when either done well or turned on their head. I love it when an author or artist takes a trope and does exactly the opposite of what you were expecting. That is my favorite. I like dark stuff and angsty stuff and fluffy stuff and funny stuff, so really, I will happily read any trope if it is well written.

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm still trying to figure out how, exactly, I found my way to fandom. I started fanwriting when I was five. (I wrote a story that was basically: Fonzie does an Evil Kneivel type trick on his motorcycle, and SLAMS INTO A BRICK WALL AND DIES! I was five. Writing tragedy and deathfic. What the hell.) Also - I shared this story with my mother, who looked at me funny but didn't make me do anything like see a child psychologist or anything, so I kept writing stories. Mostly in my head after that, and mostly self-inserts into Star Wars and the like.

Teenagerhood was bizarre. I would've been hugely multifannish, if there'd been an internet back then (I think) and then I might have figured out that I was actually in love with KITT, not David Hasslehoff.

Weirdly, once I went to college, I seem to have turned off my fannish interest. I think I just didn't have time. Music school is fucking all-consuming, yo.

I got back into it around 1999 - with, of all things, The Mummy. I found a Brendan Fraser fangroup and wrote some fiction. (RPS! Though I didn't actually want to have sex with Brendan, so I wrote us doing Tai Chi together. I wish this still existed in the world.)

From there, I moved into Buffy, where I joined a mailing list and started reading fanfiction - including slash! I was a Buffy/Spike shipper, but I found some Spike/Xander fic which made me do a Castiel-style headtilt, and then Spike/Angel (or Angelus) fanfic that made me go: OMG YES THIS ALL OF THIS FOREVER WHAT IS THIS EVEN?!!?!?!? D:

And then The Mummy 2 came out, and I started writing a script for The Mummy 3. (Mine would've been SO MUCH BETTER than the one they actually made.) I wrote other stuff, too, mostly self-insert (and my self-insert was always the best friend or maternal figure or helper person because I really did want to be besties with these people, not have sex with them).

Then Lord of the Rings happened, and I found a group of super-awesome folks to get involved with (and got initiated into LJ), started writing even more self-insert stories (still thinking they were basically original fiction at this point, ahahaha oh, no), and then. And then! [livejournal.com profile] gayalithiel came onto the scene and we started writing a sprawling vampire universe populated with our favorite actors. Vampire Greg. (Long story for another time.) And seriously, we wrote SO MUCH. I was so heavily into that universe. I still look back and think I could turn it into something really cool - we had some really neat ideas and did just buttloads of research and background work. Maybe someday.

And then - I finally broke the fanfiction barrier. 10 years ago, this past Christmas eve. I posted my very first fanfic, and Alexander (2004) FPS/RPS thing for the girl who would become my ex-girlfriend. I wrote a fair number of shorts in that fandom, most dedicated to her, and then everything there fell apart and my writing mojo completely dried up.

Thankfully, I got out of the bad situation, and writing came back, slowly but surely. And when my future wife introduced me to SGA, I never looked back. I have 290 works on the AO3, and 134 of them are SGA. We moved to DW pretty much the second it opened its doors, and it's become my fannish home. I'm still trying to wrangle other platforms, and I think I've pretty much come up with this (subject to change):

[personal profile] kate: my fannish and personal home; where my friends are; where I post about squeeful things and RL things and just about everything
[archiveofourown.org profile] kisahawklin: where all the fic is kept
[livejournal.com profile] kisahawklin: I keep this only for the few friends and fests only on LJ. Someday it may become obsolete, but not yet.
[twitter.com profile] kisahawklin: pretty much exclusively for SPN tweeting and watching the cast live-tweet shows
[tumblr.com profile] kisahawklin: I get the appeal, now. Mostly for SPN and definitely for all things visual. Still learning my way around there.

And... that's that, I guess? There should probably be a note up there about falling into the incredible Losers fandom, and moving into Supernatural, but I think I've covered those enough before. YAY FANDOM! :D :D :D :D

ETA: I always seem to start blathering and then miss parts of the question! Kisa Hawklin is the name of my first D&D character and has been my online moniker since I got online, back in 1993. I do have two pseudonyms, and I challenge anyone to figure out who they are. One is almost 11 years old and the other is at least 5. Both have works posted at the AO3. (Some of my favorites, actually. I may eventually pull the 11 year old pseud into kisahawklin, but we'll see.) I doubt anyone would ever guess them, though (and have at - good luck with that!).

Oh, man. I always feel selfish when I do this, but you know, you guys are AMAZING and I have received some of the greatest gifts from this, so I'm going to do it despite my constant misgivings.

1. I'd love a few more Supernatural buddies. I know there aren't that many on DW, so if you're on tumblr and you can stand what is likely to my posting about Supernatural all the freaking time, follow me there? I'm [tumblr.com profile] kisahawklin (as I am everywhere that's not here). Feel free to friend me here, too, if you're stopping by from the Fandom Snowflake post! I post more broadly than Supernatural here, though.

2. I would love someone to cheerlead and/or beta my fic (again, mostly Supernatural). Betas really only for finished works, and I am looking for someone with a firm hand and strong opinions (but a willingness to allow variations for style). I haven't had a consistent beta in a while and I miss it - good betas are like writing school. For a cheerleader, I'd just love someone with whom I can share WIPs (including trading WIPs - I'm good at mutual cheerleading, just ask [personal profile] wintercreek) and get a daily "yay!" about. It's so helpful to keep me going.

3. Tutorials on gif-making. I have a feeling, now that I'm on tumblr, that I'm going to have to figure this one out.

Me rambling about Team Free Will and Wincestiel and some awesome recs. )

AND! I'm super late on this post, partially because life happened, but also partially because I posted a Wincestiel big bang a while back, thinking there wasn't going to be any art. Found out [tumblr.com profile] wifihunters was having a tough time IRL but was still working on the art and now it's live and holy crap IT IS AMAZING.

The story behind this story is that I signed up for a Wincestiel big bang last year, and the epic story I'd been working on (I had 25k words done going in – I really thought I could finish it!). But then I've realized it's roughly a 100k word story and I wasn't going to finish in time for the deadline. But it was a 10k minimum and I can pull that out in a day if I need to, so I came up with a second story and started to write. What if Cas asked the Winchesters out on a date – both of them? But then I couldn't finish that one either (though they extended the deadline by a month – I could've probably made it if they'd said something when I sent my defaulting email). And so when this Team Free Will Big Bang came up, I decided to finish that romcom idea because I loved it so much. I'm still working on the other epic story, and hoping to finish that one next year. I've got another one in the works, too, an alt!season 9 that I think will be awesome. But anyway – I finished this one, and there is freaking GORGEOUS art to go with it. :D :D :D :D

Full request: if I had a huge crush on Amanda Tapping, what episodes of SPN should I watch? Should I bother? Was Naomi in it very much?

Well. I am not an unbiased person to ask this of, because I happen to love Supernatural, so I will always say yes!

And Amanda is brilliant as the enigmatic angel Naomi, so I say absolutely, this is worth a watch. She's gorgeous as ever, and just knocks it out of the park in her time on the show.

In addition, the plotline with her and re-writing Castiel's base programming hits me in all my Supernatural feels, culminating in one of my top five episodes ever, 8.17 Goodbye Stranger. So yeah, I'd say, watching her episodes would totally be worth it for an Amanda fan, and give you a decent sense of what Supernatural can do right, when it puts its mind to it. Her eps are:

8.07 A Little Slice of Kevin
8.08 Hunteri Heroici (A hilarious episode)
8.10 Torn and Frayed
8.17 Goodbye Stranger (A heartwrenching episode)
8.19 Taxi Driver
8.21 The Great Escapist
8.23 Sacrifice (Another heartwrenching episode - and she dies, so, if you don't want to see that, maybe stop this one fifteen minutes from the end? After her little speech to Dean and Cas.)

Full text of the question: [personal profile] grammarwoman: Are there any fandoms that you resisted but fell into anyway? Or ones that you thought would be perfect for you but wound up not clicking?

Yeah, actually, yes to both of these.

So, after SGA, or even while it was waning, after it'd been cancelled, I was looking around hard for a fandom. The SGA folks had scattered, and I tried a lot of the things they were doing, Sherlock and Merlin, a few other things I can't even remember now. None of it hit me. Neither did any show really grab me - or rather, neither did show + fandom. There were shows I loved with fandoms that were either not where I was or just non-existent (Revenge, though I'm off that now), Leverage (though I've seen more love lately), White Collar or fandoms I didn't click with or, I loved the show, but had no real fannish interest (Hannibal, Sleepy Hollow).

I found The Losers, which is a great small fandom, and there was a lot of love and energy there (and I still love it, and will likely play in it forever), but since it was a movie, there wasn't the same sort of excitement I remembered from SGA, when we were all watching the episodes live and there was meta and commiseration about hiatus and... yeah.

And then. And then Supernatural (which I had STUDIOUSLY AVOIDED getting involved with back when it started because I was in SGA and didn't want another fandom, and then later because I had the impression that the fandom was batshit nuts (this impression has not changed)). I've talked about how I fell into this fandom before (thanks a lot, [personal profile] cupidsbow), and it was... tough. I've never been embarrassed about SGA the way I am sometimes embarrassed about SPN. I had no qualms with the fandom (even when they went a little over-the-top) like I do with SPN. But I'm here, and the show has really hooked me (lucky for me Season 10 is just knocking it out of the park for me) and I don't think I'll be going anywhere soon. I'm doing that thing where everything reminds me of the boys. It used to be John and Rodney - eeeeeeeeverything reminded me of John and Rodney. Now it's Sam and Castiel and even Dean sometimes. And this? This is not somewhere I expected to be. And I probably would have laughed at you, if you had said this to me a couple years ago.

As for the other, I've also talked about it before a bit, but: MCU. I love the movies a ton, I'm keeping up with Agents of SHIELD (sort of - I think I'm three eps behind now?), I've even read a few fics (and bookmarked this terrific one: How to Win Friends and Influence People by [archiveofourown.org profile] igrockspock Summary: Maria Hill's definition of "job interview" is different from other people's.). And I've read a few other things - one of [personal profile] devildoll's Steve/Bucky fics from before Cap 1, even, some short Tony/Steve and Bucky/Steve and Natasha/Pepper and I've even betaed Clint/Coulson. I like it; it's fine. I love the characters and the depth, but. I dunno. I'm still just waiting, expecting to get hit with that one episode/movie/idea that knocks me over and drags me into the fandom.
