So, I recently got back in touch with a dear dear friend from the Losers fandom only to find out THEY ARE IN MDZS NOW (specifically the live action, CQL/The Untamed). And then they asked me for vid recs and... I uh. May have gone overboard. So, here, have the fruits of my labor.

These notes are really for them, so don't expect anything too polished. I'm not cleaning up the links or anything either, I spent like, 10 hours on this already and I'm done. But maybe there'll be something in there other people might like. :)

The second one is a truly lovely tentacle fic. I am a big fan of tentacles, and they're not huge in MDZS, but this is a good use of them - and not the kind we tend to see (resentful energy tentacles being the most common, I think). Good fun, lovely established relationship WangXian.

The third one is a lovely fic about losing a golden core and leaning into what that means instead of trying to figure out how to hide it from everyone. Wei Ying learning to make use of disability aids is really great here.

The light bulbs above Castiel’s head shattered one by one as he drew towards the man; he vaguely felt sparks blooming like flowers in the air around him, and bullets brushing lightly through the skin of his vessel. The man drew his knife. It flashed coldly in the dying light.

“I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition,” Castiel said.

Dean. Dean Winchester. Dean speaking, and Castiel answering. The sound waves met in the air, superimposing in a steep arc. Dean’s eyes were locked on Castiel’s. He had been waiting for this moment for centuries. Eons.

Longer.

So one of the things that can be overlooked in fanfic is the language. This one is beautiful and rich, and the story weaves a terrific tapestry with canon. Lovely story.

Summary: They're still reeling from Dean's stint in Purgatory, the Trials are tearing them apart, the world hangs in the balance (again)—and Dean wants to get a pool table and have a sex marathon. Of course he does.

The word for this fic is relentless. The boys are relentless, the plot is relentless, the boys' doubts are relentless. It's an amazing read, and a chunk of canon that was left out of the show and fits right into late season 8. It's like a cut bit of film; the story itself is a solid block of atmosphere, and it simply ends, it doesn't resolve, so take note: it might take you some time to reorient yourself after this. You don't want to read this in a hurry.

If you do have time, it is the most perfect Sam POV, and it doesn't forgive Dean his sins, either. Gorgeous. Perfect characterization, dialogue, and atmosphere. Beautiful.

My notes: This is just... gorgeous. Seriously, the way the tale is wound all the way to the end, and then the penny drops that this really is Supernatural, and it's so heartwrenching, those few sentences about the Winchesters from this particular outside POV. Wow. Beautiful.

curiouscorvid's fic Silver Balls is a hysterical outside POV on Destiel decorating the tree naked (off a flailosaurus prompt). SO. ADORABLE. So cute, so much awesome Sam in a Destiel fic. LOooooOOOoooooVE.

parcequelle made a Leverage/Buffy fusion, where Parker's the slayer, Sophie's the watcher, and Eliot and Hardison are the scoobies. The One Girl Job is both amazing in terms of how well the crossover works and also in how sweetly heartwrenching it is in such a short, seemingly silly premise.

I will NEVER not ask for Nightside stuff in

fandom_stocking because a couple year's back, I got the amazing Teddy Bear's Graveyard about Jessica Sorrow from

anonymous_sibyl, and this year, I got a ficlet about John/Suzie/Eddie from

katarik where they are SO PERFECTLY DRAWN. HOW DO PEOPLE DO THIS?! I have never received a fanwork in the Nightside fandom that hasn't been amazingly done. And some year, someone is going to make me Dead Boy art, and I will die.

senmut wrote me the most delightful Jenkins backstory ficlet in the Librarians fandom, and I absolutely looooooove that mostly it is not actually giving us any backstory. It's such delightful characterization, and THE LIBRARIANS!!!! :D :D :D :D

And last, but oooooohhhhhh so not least,

citrusjava made me THE MOST PERFECT Wincestiel/Project Runway fusion/crossover/thingee!!! I Know Who You Did Last Summer has Cas making SOCKS. SOCKS. I DON'T THINK YOU UNDERSTAND. *cries* And then Sam losing it and Cas and Dean going after him and just... no. THIS IS PERFECT. *clutches it to chest*

I am so so so so grateful for this fest every year, you guys. I just love making stuff for people (list under the cut, because this post isn't about that), and then I get all this amazing stuff in return, and just seeing the outpouring of fannish joy makes me tear up. Every. Year. *happy siiiiiiiigh*

Day 4: In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a Broadway show, a movie, a concert, a poetry reading, a museum trip, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Compose some limericks, haikus, free-form poetry, 5-word stories. Document a particular bit of real person canon. Take some pictures. Draw a stick-figure comic. Create something.

I'm counting the two podfics and six fics I created for

fandom_stocking here. Reveals aren't until Friday evening, if you're feeling ambitions and want to gift a little something. :D

Day 5: Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

Not sure if my favorite part is that he DOES THE ACTUAL DYNAMICS in the line "it goes on and on and on and on," or the little dance move he does in the elevator before the doors close. Or... well, it's probably the Cougar bit at the end. Because Cooooooougar. :D

Oh man. This is always a tough one for me because I really love everything. I read very widely and I enjoy most tropes when either done well or turned on their head. I love it when an author or artist takes a trope and does exactly the opposite of what you were expecting. That is my favorite. I like dark stuff and angsty stuff and fluffy stuff and funny stuff, so really, I will happily read any trope if it is well written.

AND! I'm super late on this post, partially because life happened, but also partially because I posted a Wincestiel big bang a while back, thinking there wasn't going to be any art. Found out

wifihunters was having a tough time IRL but was still working on the art and now it's live and holy crap IT IS AMAZING.

The story behind this story is that I signed up for a Wincestiel big bang last year, and the epic story I'd been working on (I had 25k words done going in – I really thought I could finish it!). But then I've realized it's roughly a 100k word story and I wasn't going to finish in time for the deadline. But it was a 10k minimum and I can pull that out in a day if I need to, so I came up with a second story and started to write. What if Cas asked the Winchesters out on a date – both of them? But then I couldn't finish that one either (though they extended the deadline by a month – I could've probably made it if they'd said something when I sent my defaulting email). And so when this Team Free Will Big Bang came up, I decided to finish that romcom idea because I loved it so much. I'm still working on the other epic story, and hoping to finish that one next year. I've got another one in the works, too, an alt!season 9 that I think will be awesome. But anyway – I finished this one, and there is freaking GORGEOUS art to go with it. :D :D :D :D

sga_santa fic got posted! It is so cool! I am bad with naming this sort of thing; it's an AU where there are houses and people are dressed in uniforms and frilly dresses and there's all the formality all the time, and the whole story is from Cadman and Aiden's POV and yet sweetly McShep, just... so lovely. The world-building is fascinating, I will always be amazed at people who can do it in such a short space like that. Lovely! Won't you go read?

I laughed SO FUCKING HARD - I am crying here, folks, crying.

Crowley tries to write fanfiction and then it devolves into a hilarious round robin.

The opening is gold, and it just keeps getting better. The character voices are spot on, and omg, I am still crying thinking of some of the lines. I just typed half the fic into a chat window with my wife. So much awesome, my face hurts from the smiling.

And then there are my RL things. Right now my life consists of the following:

+ Football! I'm not a huge soccer fan but we've been watching everything, and it's a little surprising how much you can pick up by osmosis.

+ Psych rewatch in the evenings. We're halfway through S5 and the Gus&Shawn dynamic makes me squee every time. I just love them. I also love how great Jules and Lassie are as partners.

+ Work. I think I'm technically done with the project this week, but I'll probably still work on it next week to make sure I have the deliverables I promised. I also have another project I need to get to tonight, and I have a gig in July! :D :D :D I don't know if it involves travel or not yet, but I am hoping so. If it does, I'll be in New Jersey.

+ Teeth. My wife and I are finally taking care of our teeth (apparently our dental insurance is amazing!). Tomorrow I get three teeth pulled so I can get braces to straighten them out. Yup, I'm getting braces at age 44. It'll take two years. Whee.

+ Right now we're watching the S3 opener of Perception. I really enjoy this show so far except for Daniel's fucking conducting. He does not conduct properly (he conducts the classical music he listens to) and it drives me fucking nuts. ETA: And he ( spoilers! ) So that makes me a little sad and angry. But I'll be over it by next week.

amplificathon, I have discovered the submission page for the Audiofic Archive and submitted all my podfics, so now all my podfics are available in two different places. Have to figure out how to do that with my fic. I've been collecting my completed works for a while now (hat tip

anatsuno for making me realize that it's problematic to have your content in only one place), and just need to figure out where to put them and how to organize them. I think I'll likely put them on my wife's site and link to indexes on my AO3/LJ/DW. Seems easiest and most straightforward, I think. Gonna have to put headers on them, though, none of them have that (or even titles, I think). HRM.

- Went to see Million Ways to Die in the West last night.

soleta and I were going to see Maleficent but she wasn't feeling up to it, so I went to the movies by myself. I never remember who Seth MacFarlane is, he just... I don't think about him, so his name is just out there in my consciousness as a comic that exists and it doesn't tie to any particular brand of comedy, or TV shows or movies. Well, that was unfortunate (since once I found out what stuff he was attached to, I would've known his humor is not for me at all). I hated it. So much scat humor, and penis humor, and racist humor. The only thing that made me smile was watching Charlize Theron laugh. She is so lovely, and watching her laugh made me so happy inside. The jokes about how awful life was back then were amusing too (the running joke about being unable to smile in photographs was mildly amusing the first time or two), but I could've done without the awful romance plot. BLEH.

+ Going to Maleficent tonight, I hope! I have high hopes for this movie and am very excite.

Just woke up (which sucks because I fell asleep after 3am yesterday) and in scrolling my dwircle with all my fic feeds, there's just... nothing I want right now. People are feeling hurt by the show so there is this plethora of fluffy, happy fic, and it is the exact opposite of what I want.

And I would work on my own not-fluffy fic, but I just got a new Macbook Air (yay!) and it has office 2011, but that won't recognize .docx files, which of course all my stories are because I am super lazy and often just leave the doc open for days before saving it, and then do so in a hurry. And of course my work computer encrypts all my damn flash drives, so I have to take the flash drive to another computer, unencrypt and download all my stories, then wipe the flash drive, then re-upload, and then transfer the stuff to the mac. I fell asleep somewhere during wiping the flash drive. And now I'm awake but my wife is asleep and I am afraid to do this stuff without her looking over my shoulder because the chance that I will do something stupid and lose half a million words of fic is terrifying.

I received the wonderful Negotiable Affection (give me something to hold onto) which is hooker!Cougar and john!Jensen's first kinky appointment. Includes bondage and marking (my favorite!). It's wonderful and perfect, moreso than I can say for reasons which will have to wait until after the reveal, and I love love love it!

Also excellent: Your Heart Beating Next to Mine, Jensen/Cougar/Pooch/Jolene, a soulbond fic that has a very different take on it than I've ever seen, and which I enjoy immensely. I'd love another 100,000 words of this fic to roll around in, because I love the way xie portrays all the characters and Jensen's general hesitancy. Warning: mentions of (and descriptions of resultant trauma) of abuse (mostly emotional, I think) from a previous boyfriend.

SG1/Losers crossover that has the most amazing Aisha (comics canon but set in movie timeline, I think?): Get Your Hate On, which captures Aisha and Jensen and disbelief at the Stargate program beautifully. Also, wonderful appearance by Rodney McKay.

Save the Last Dance for Me is a fucking CLAY/ROQUE VID! And it is wonderful and perfect, and the song choice and clips are amaaaaaaaaaazing, OMG you need this in your life, I am serious!

Jacinta and Carlita Kick Ass, art of genderbent Jensen and Cougar. I don't know what to say - it's just... right. And I really like Cougar's boobs.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge

2012 (SGA podfics) 2013 (SGA Santa recs)

This is one of my favorites. I love reccing things, so I am happy to do this one every time. I miss delicious, I have to say, as the only bookmarks I keep now are AO3, and all the SPN fanart I've liked enough to rec has been over on LJ, and I'm not sure I'd be able to track it down (but I will try).

In the meantime, here are some long stories I've bookmarked lately that I absolutely adore. All Supernatural, various pairings. None underloved, sorry to say, as this fandom and most of these pairings are huge, but I will try to do better on that front next time around. These recs go from fluffiest to darkest.

I hate it when that happens (happened to me on a story this size, which is devastating, the amount of time and effort you put into a novella-sized story), and I just think the author deserves more love, the story has a really great feel to it. From my bookmark: Brit English, but the story and characterization are totally worth it. It's not that distracting once you get rolling. Do yourself a favor and skip the comments (where one or two idiots decided to be bigoted assholes). Sam POV with an easily readable Dean and good angst about the situation throughout [this is a requirement for me, for Wincest].

Reccer's Notes: Gorgeously slow and angsty and realistic (realistic - a word I can't normally relate to Wincest, except when it's done like this, as a slow realization and as an alternative to something else (usually death or something equally awful)) and beautifully drawn characterization of both boys. Also, really hot sex and the drugged out POV of Dean when he's feeding is perhaps one of my favorite things ever. Ahem.

It's a ficlet PLUS ART, OMG, and she has captured the pair of them so well, both in words and in the art. It's sad-ish (no more than the show or the comic, maybe less than the comic? I hope to be able to put some more things in the scramble over the next few days, but I was sort of writing my story to the very last second before reveals. Speaking of, I got the most gorgeous fic in the universe in the exchange, Persephone is having sex in hell, gorgeous, dark, and perfect Aisha/Jolene - so so so beautiful, I can't even, it's like someone took all my favorite things out of my brain and made it into the perfect story for me. I can't lie, I know my author, not just because I made the assignments, but because I betaed the story, and man. Re-reading it now is just the most wonderful sweetness. I love love love it. I was randomly spoiled for the end of House by a post on an entirely different topic. It was distressing, actually. I don't know that I'll ever finish watching House (I can't even remember when I stopped, season seven, maybe?), but I didn't know what happened and now I do and it was a shock to my system and I'm feeling a little strange and a bit sad.

I think that's the end of my list of random things. I am betaing fic for a good friend that hasn't written in a while and it's so pleasing to see them write, I can't even tell you. So I'm off to do that, and I'll be back tomorrow to catch up on things, now that my Ante Up obligations are done and I have some breathing room.

ETA: Nope, not the end. Just talking to

soleta and mentioning that I am close to putting up my 200th fic on the AO3, and I'm pretty sure it's going to end up being Supernatural dubcon Sam/Dean/Castiel. That or fic about Sam losing his viriginity. And she groaned and said "You should write a special fic for your 200th fic," and I said, "Well, I could always finish the Cougar hooker!fic," and she said, "Yes, fine, good. As long as it's not Supernatural."

One of the things I've noticed about a lot of the vids I've been watching is that the songs are just Too. Damn. Long. There are a lot that start out strong but then either end up losing coherency in the middle or repeating clips over and over. Seriously, if you only have a couple minutes' worth of material, why are you choosing a song that's four and a half minutes long? Cut out the bridge if it doesn't fit. Do you really need twelve choruses? No, of course not! I find it funny that a lot of vidders (and this is just youtube, I don't believe this is anywhere near the best and the brightest of fandom, Festivids has shown me quite clearly that there are vidders who do this sort of thing, and do it well) don't think to cut the song up the way they cut clips up. You have to have an ear to do it, because you can't just mash two parts of a song together unless they work harmonically (or unless you're looking for a jump cut, which, musically is a little weird, but I'd love to see someone make work), but I imagine that most vidders have a pretty good ear, it's part of the job to make the clips and the music work together.

ETA: This wasn't really me bemoaning the entire vidding community, though I grant you it sounds like it (it was 2:30am, please cut me a teenie bit of slack). ESPECIALLY since I don't do this. I don't generally criticize (another reason this post is even here - I would never have posted this if I had been ~~sober~~ non-sleep-deprived). I certainly don't critique things I don't do, which, at least for now, and likely for a long time yet, is all vidders ever - even the people who made the vids I don't particularly like are obviously waaaaaaaay ahead of me, as I've never even tried it. This was me making an obvservation about vids that I was watching on one particular medium (one I think is maybe similar to FF.net in some ways? as it seems that the vids are generally of a lower quality than those of, for example, Festivids, a lot of which were hosted on vimeo and other sites (my vimeo experiences in general have been quite lovely!)). And

busaikko points out below that editing music is harder than I think (which is not a surprise to me, not at all), and that a lot of folks don't have the time or resources to be able to do it effectively. If I figure out how to do it, I am going to make a giant meta post on how to edit music, because I want people to be able to do this so they can tell the stories they want to tell and aren't constrained by their resources. /ETA

I pretty much intend to edit my songs, probably fairly early on in the process and maybe some later, if there's clip trouble. I have a feeling I will be editing the shit out of the music a lot to accommodate my ideas (I tend to have ideas for parts of songs, with other parts of those same songs that are completely inappropriate for the concept).

So anyway - rec me some vids? I'm stuck on Supernatural at the moment, so of course I'd love some truly amazing stuff there (any pairing or RPF (also any pairing) or gen of either), but I won't turn down any suggestions for amazing vids.
