In your own space, rec three fanworks that you did not create.

These could be your all-time favorites, fanworks that fit a certain theme, or the last three fanworks you read/viewed/listened to and loved. If you’re looking for a way to make today’s challenge more *coff* interesting, how about rec’ing in small fandoms or rare pairs? A compilation of fanworks that make a great introduction to a fandom?

For the purposes of this challenge, a fanwork is defined as any creative endeavor for a fandom – fic, podfic, art, crafts, vids, meta... If you love it and someone else created it, please share it!

Don’t feel limited (or obligated) to make three recs. One or two is good, and so is a dozen. Just share some fandom love!

A little late today; life's getting super busy. But I got an amazing gift, so that's definitely my first rec. I wrote it, but honestly, Jelly's read makes it 1000% better. She's just such a delightful reader, and the cold read format is also super hilarious.

[Coldread] Your Voice in My Ear by jellyfishfire
Fandom: 陈情令 | The Untamed (TV) RPF, Chinese Actor RPF, UNIQ (Band)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Wang Yi Bo/Wang Yi Bo/Xiao Zhan | Sean
Characters: Wang Yi Bo, Xiao Zhan | Sean, Cho Seungyoun | Woodz, Li Wen Han, Zhou Yi Xuan, Kim Sungjoo (UNIQ)
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - College/University, Battle of the Bands, Radio, Getting Together, Podfic & Podficced Works, Podfic, Podfic Length: 1-1.5 Hours, Coldread
Summary: Yibo can hardly sleep with all the stress from school and UNIQ's upcoming performance. A late night radio station introduces him to a soothing voice and kind soul.

The second one is a truly lovely tentacle fic. I am a big fan of tentacles, and they're not huge in MDZS, but this is a good use of them - and not the kind we tend to see (resentful energy tentacles being the most common, I think). Good fun, lovely established relationship WangXian.

Fandom: 魔道祖师 - 墨香铜臭 | Módào Zǔshī - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù
Rating: Explicit

Relationships: Lán Zhàn | Lán Wàngjī/Wèi Yīng | Wèi Wúxiàn
Additional Tags: Plot What Plot/Porn Without Plot, Tentacles, Slime, Kink Exploration, wwx's canon pain kink, wangxian's canon consent play, Roleplay, they are so horny for each other in any bodily configuration, Tentacle Sex, Anal Sex, xeno no-genitals sex, Post-Canon, Bottom!LWJ, Established Relationship, Light Bondage
Summary: The tentacle climbs up Lan Wangji's forearm and tugs him closer. This time it's his turn to shiver. The feeling is — like nothing he's experienced. Cool and slippery, strong but not the strength of muscles. Soft. He wants to feel it all over.

(Wei Wuxian accidentally gets cursed, which results in an impromptu sex vacation. It goes great for everyone involved.)

The third one is a lovely fic about losing a golden core and leaning into what that means instead of trying to figure out how to hide it from everyone. Wei Ying learning to make use of disability aids is really great here.

Elder, an Aesthetic (8359 words) by MarbleGlove
Fandom: 陈情令 | The Untamed (TV), 魔道祖师 - 墨香铜臭 | Módào Zǔshī - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù

Additional Tags: Fix-It, Post-Sunshot Campaign (Módào Zǔshī), this might be crack
Summary: Wei Wuxian always enjoyed picking an aesthetic and really leaning into it. As an adolescent, he was joyous, entitled and high-born; during the war, he was dangerous and threatening. After the war, he was lost. But then he found his new aesthetic: Elder of the Jiang Sect.

There are many many more in the world, but it's late and these are three I have enjoyed in the last week, which is all I can do for right now. :)

One of my favourite things about this challenge is the pure variety of skills and ideas that this community of fans possesses. You all are you talented, and in so many different fandoms!

In your own space, create a fanwork.

Don't think I only mean "write some fic" with this, though please do write some fic if you like, but also consider art, icons, graphics, podfics, musical scores, meta, fibre arts, vids, recipes, or whatever other combination of the words "fan" and "work" that strike your fancy. Have fun with it!

Summary:
He tells his sister, "There's a little boy in Yiling with no parents and he's in trouble. We have to go and find him."
His sister smiles and says, "This is a good story, A-Cheng. Tell me more."
"It's not a story," he says. He's frustrated by his own childish petulance, but he can't seem to stop it. "I'm from the future. I know."
His sister laughs, and he glares, and then she clears her throat and stops laughing, but still has a small, indulgent smile. "Of course, A-Cheng," she says. "And what's this little boy's name?"
"Wei Ying," he says, and his sister's smile freezes. "His name is Wei Ying, and his parents are Zangse Sanren and Wei Changze, and something bad has happened to them. Wei Ying is alone in Yiling and he needs help," he insists.

Jiang Cheng starts again from the beginning.

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, time you spent in the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

This challenge is fairy open, and is based on people looking back on the last year and thinking about their personal wins.

What I want people to remember for this challenge is -- wins can be giant, small and everything in-between. Did you finally finish or publish that novel you've been working on for years? Did you get those bookshelves reorganised? Did you learn a new skill? Did you do something you were scared of? Did you post a certain number of fanworks at A03? Did you master the perfect gooey brownies? Those are all examples of wins and they all count. Just something you can look back on and think, I did that, and I'm proud of that.

But, we know life can be hard for us all at times, so please don't think you have to only share big, memorable wins. If you look back at last year and all you can think to say is, 'I survived' well that counts too.

Man, 100% last year was a survival year. This year will also be a survival year. Work is absolutely fucking bonkers. Despite that, I did achieve a few things. I worked my ass off for a really difficult but truly amazing concert in the fall. I recorded a 65 chapter, 100+k word fic over the period of a couple months. I did, somewhere in there, get a boatload of work done. My office (which I am only nominally supervising at the moment) has done well in my absence and is still flourishing.

I'm a little disappointed with my fanworks output last year (especially my writing), but I tell you what, I still did a hell of a lot, including and outside work, and that's pretty awesome.

Okay, hear me out…

I know Snowflake is sunshine and rainbows and singing from the rooftops all the lovely and brilliant that is being in a fandom. But, let’s be honest. Sometimes--like with other things--there are sucky parts, heartbreak parts and just plain UGH parts. Rather than holding onto those slights and resentments, or burying them and pretending they don’t exist, just to have them slowly and almost imperceptibly seep into the rest of the challenges this month, why don’t we just let it all out?

For those of us who celebrate Festivus for the rest of us, this will be familiar. We call it “Airing of Grievances” and it is actually very satisfying, whether you do it tongue in cheek, get introspective or just literally scream.

In your own space, Scream Into the Void. Get it all out.

Okay, so my first thought with this was my frustration with antis. Then I just. Did not want to even deal with the exhaustion that brings.

So the next bit was my feelings about podfic permission requesting. I push for blanket permission/transformative works statements because it is a bandaid that helps people who really need those BP statements to feel comfortable recording and have some barrier to asking. But it IS just a bandaid.

Listen, I just do not understand how people can make transformative works and then be all precious about other people making transformative works about their transformative works. Like... YOU just did this without asking anybody at all. Why do *I* have to ask permission?

Especially in the case of podfic, because it is also an accessibility aid! You don't listen to podfic? SO WHAT. It's not ABOUT you. It is about a) the podficcer, because they were SO DELIGHTED with your work that it inspired them to create another work about your work (and if you don't think that podfic transforms the original text THEN DON'T EVEN FUCKING TALK TO ME) and b) the people who DO listen to (or NEED) podfic. Would you say no to art because you don't like art? OF COURSE YOU WOULD NOT.

Everyone says "Ooh, I'd love fanart, I don't care if you think it's terrible I want it!" and they're soooooooo flattered someone would want to make fanart. It's a compliment. TREAT PODFIC THE SAME FUCKING WAY, PLEASE. It is a compliment. If someone is inspired, they should just be able to do it. Why is this so hard to understand?

This is an exceptionally frustrating thing for me, that people who make transformative works are not fully supportive of people making transformative works of their stuff. You know what we think of authors who do that? Yeah. That's what I think about fanworks creators that don't allow podfic.

For those who don't like podfic but feel bad because they're not going to listen to it to comment, you do not need to listen to it to say, "this is so awesome my fic inspired something like this! thank you so much for making it!" and calling it a day. Podficcers know that not everyone listens to podfic. They get it. Just say THANK YOU and MOVE ON.

*breathes hard*

*steps off soapbox*

Thank you, and have a nice day.

Decided I wanted a drive and some podfic today, so I loaded up Waiting for Spring written by [archiveofourown.org profile] theivinghippo and read by [archiveofourown.org profile] mulberry_graceful, and listened to loving talk about baseball and Chicago while I drove Lakeshore Drive.

Then I stopped for the best ice cream I've had in my life bar none, Oberweis. It's a really good day.

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

You know what? I tried something new last year, and not only was it honestly better than I thought, it ended up being a huge hit despite the untested format (which people seemed to enjoy almost as much as the story).

I'm talking about cold reading the whole And Time is but a Paper Moon story and then the resulting (multiple!) series. It was so many hours and hours and hours of time, I did it almost every single day for 5 months, and it was so much fun. I really enjoyed it, and I loved talking to people about the story, the cold read, and the other stuff I put in there.

And while I'm patting myself on the back, Jelly and I also started a podcast that's in a similar vein, where we just have a good time together and rec podfics and stories and make trailers and whatever. It's a blast. It's been a ton of fun to do.

I've been sick, so I haven't done much podficcing since I stopped doing the daily cold reads, and I'm hoping to get back in the swing of things as my work starts to slow down a bit.

Last time I did this, I offered fic, and while I was neck deep in the Supernatural fandom, I also offered Leverage because I will adore Leverage until the end of time. Unfortunately for me, I was not feeling Leverage and it took me the ENTIRE YEAR to finish those fics. So I was pretty sure that I was not going to sign up this time.

HOWEVER! They now allow podfics and other types of fanworks! (And maybe they allowed them before and I didn't notice because I didn't think of doing a podfic before?) BUT ANYWAY. They allow podfics! So I signed up, and now my podfic services are up for auction! Here is kisahawklin's Fandom Trumps Hate post! I only put three fandoms, The Untamed/MDZS, Leverage, and The Magicians, but I'd probably be willing to read other stuff! If you think you might want a podfic from me not in one of those fandoms, lemme know and we can talk about it! Unfortunately I'm not in tune to this auction's social media, so I missed the posts going live (mine has an error that I hope they're working on fixing), and now there's only like, 24 hours left to pledge.

Please check it out if you're interested! [personal profile] fth2021offerings! Tagged by fandom and type of fanwork!

+ OH MY GOD, THIS DANCE ROUTINE (The Company at Vibe XIX 2014). O_____O I've never seen a crew so synchronized, and this isn't just five or six people, it's like, thirty. AMAZING.

+ You Have the Right to Remain Anon collection at the AO3. Now you don't have to orphan your works, you can leave them anon forever - you'll still see them in your works, on your dash, and get notifications for them. Neat idea. ETA, from [personal profile] melannen: There are apparently several collections like this, and anonymous is much larger, so probably easier to make it more anonymous than the one I originally linked there.

+ Looking for a Leverage podfic to record so that it will overtake LOTRIPS on my dash as one of my top five fandoms at AO3 (not that I don't like LOTRIPS - I just never wrote in it that much or was attached to my writing and I would be embarrassed for folks to see most of what I wrote these days). Found The Not Your Teaching Tool Job by [archiveofourown.org profile] BlackEyedGirl, Parker/Eliot/Hardison with biromantic asexual Parker wanting them to just understand and stop asking her questions and trying to fix her, okay? Brilliantly written, can't wait to record.

+ While I have given up on posting most of my podfics on [community profile] amplificathon, I have discovered the submission page for the Audiofic Archive and submitted all my podfics, so now all my podfics are available in two different places. Have to figure out how to do that with my fic. I've been collecting my completed works for a while now (hat tip [personal profile] anatsuno for making me realize that it's problematic to have your content in only one place), and just need to figure out where to put them and how to organize them. I think I'll likely put them on my wife's site and link to indexes on my AO3/LJ/DW. Seems easiest and most straightforward, I think. Gonna have to put headers on them, though, none of them have that (or even titles, I think). HRM.

- Went to see Million Ways to Die in the West last night. [personal profile] soleta and I were going to see Maleficent but she wasn't feeling up to it, so I went to the movies by myself. I never remember who Seth MacFarlane is, he just... I don't think about him, so his name is just out there in my consciousness as a comic that exists and it doesn't tie to any particular brand of comedy, or TV shows or movies. Well, that was unfortunate (since once I found out what stuff he was attached to, I would've known his humor is not for me at all). I hated it. So much scat humor, and penis humor, and racist humor. The only thing that made me smile was watching Charlize Theron laugh. She is so lovely, and watching her laugh made me so happy inside. The jokes about how awful life was back then were amusing too (the running joke about being unable to smile in photographs was mildly amusing the first time or two), but I could've done without the awful romance plot. BLEH.

+ Going to Maleficent tonight, I hope! I have high hopes for this movie and am very excite.

I did things!

I have many thoughts and feels and no time. I'm settling in at the new job, so I'm able to do some things (recording podfic is nice and easy and doesn't stress me out), but I haven't got the energy to do a lot of the things that I will hopefully get back into as the summer wears on.

My podfic bigbang is live! Strangers on a Six Train (story link) by [livejournal.com profile] eye_queue and art for the podfic by [personal profile] cybel. Clicking on the art will take you to the podfic link at the AO3 where you can download/stream. If you're having trouble there, here is the podfic big bang link for downloading (there is a M4B there too - the AO3 only has an mp3).

Also, as a way to get [profile] lady_krysis into recording podfic (it totally worked, HA!), I read my own story, Fill All Thy Bones with Aches (podfic is here).

Lastly, because [personal profile] chkc is awesome, xie made art for a cover of my reading of [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan's Issue of Cuddling (story link - click on the art to go to the podfic). Click here to comment on chkc's art.

My thoughts on doing a British fandom in an American accent, let me tell you them. )

There was more - this was a particularly tough read for me ([livejournal.com profile] lavvyan got a blooper reel) - but I'm tired and it's late and I'm not even going to bother with [community profile] amplificathon because I am intimidated by the scoring process and did I mention it's late? It totally is. I'm going to bed.

The Issue of Cuddling (2443 words) by faviconlavvyan
Fandom: Sherlock (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Characters: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson
Summary: The inherent problem is, of course, that Sherlock is the world's only consulting detective. He doesn't ask for information; he deduces it. That John keeps behaving in unexpected ways is irksome. That Sherlock still hasn't been able to determine whether or not John wants a physical relationship beyond cuddling on the sofa is… annoying. Vastly so.

The Fandom Snowflake Challenge
Day 2: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

I think podfic is sorely underappreciated, so I am going to rec three of my favorites. I wish I could rec some for smaller stories/fandoms, but I don't have any handy and no time to listen (and this is already a day late).

Fireball (2:34:38), written by celli, read by shaenie.

Okay, so, this story is just fantastic, a brilliant NASCAR AU in the grand tradition of SGA AUs, wonderful and fast-paced and man, if there is a better reader for something like that, I don't know it. [personal profile] shaenie reads fast and wry and I could listen to her for hours and hours (this one is 2:34:38 and I wish it went on for five more hours).

Junk Cheap (1:11:18), written by devildoll, read by zoetrope.

This is another delightful complete AU by the first author I read comprehensively when I jumped into SGA. [personal profile] devildoll's story is gorgeous and wonderful and like a warm blanket and tea on a rainy day. Add [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope's wonderful reading and you could curl up with this on the worst of your bad days and feel warm and fuzzy.

A Beautiful Lifetime Event (2:56:54), written by astolat, read by anatsuno and
A Missing Scene for A Beautiful Lifetime Event (12:28), written by resonant, read by general_jinjur.

Delightful story and delightful missing scene. It's the classic McShep kidfic, and if you need more of an introduction to the story, I don't know what to tell you. [personal profile] anatsuno continues to be one of my absolute favorite podfic readers. Her pace and accent is music to my ears, and her voices are spot on – I love listening to her Rodney. [personal profile] general_jinjur is brilliant too, another favorite of mine. I like her accent too, though I can't place it, exactly. I have a thing for accents, maybe. Both of these readers are amazing – I'd go for anything either of them recorded, ever.
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
A rec set, because I promised to do this forever, and I just… I need something to keep my mind off how stressed work is making me, even with nothing to do (yeah, I've done ALL the work and I'm STILL stressed).

1 Losers story, 1 Losers fanmix, and 8 SGA audiofics (all John/Rodney, I believe). )
