kate: John's thinky face (SGA: John - maybe...)
We spend a lot of time in fandom spaces sharing the things that we can do, let’s spend today talking about the things we can’t do, the ideas for podfics we can’t record, the plot for an epic saga we don’t have the time to write, or an idea and music we want to vid, but don’t know how, or that WiP we started a millenia ago that still sits there mocking us…

In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do.

Oh. Dear.

So, I have an entire series of "stuff I just couldn't finish/get to work" and there are a bunch of half-finished fics in there, some with explanations of why I couldn't get them to work or full on DVD commentaries (with PODFIC, I can't even). My huge multi-fandom classical music AU isn't in there but it probably should be, and it makes me SO SAD. That is the one that I would like to finish most, I think.

Honestly, it's a huge, slow-burn, friends to lovers McShep with funny little subplots and cameos from other fandoms (there's an unfinished Losers Cougar/Jensen AU in the series too /o\) and I pretty much put all my fandoms in this universe.

The McShep plot basically is at the point where Sheppard is starting to realize maybe he's not straight, and maybe Rodney is the guy, like, oh shit, I'm gay, and I'm in love with this asshole? Which is always fun. It's Rodney POV so it's mostly oblivious, out-of-focus Sheppard panic. Next up was the two of them on the road together for a series of concerts while Sheppard was on sabbatical, then everything would come to a head around Christmas when they are playing huge concerti with Orpheus. They would get together, and then Jeannie and Madison would come to shop/hang out/see the concert in New York, and we would find out that the reason Weir hated Rodney is because she had a fling with Jeannie in college and then Jeannie went off and got pregnant and married the guy and she was brokenhearted and angry and could only really take it out on Rodney. Then John has an amazing performance (I was really looking forward to describing Rodney doing the Tchaik violin concerto and John doing Rach 2) and would be booked for a huge concert tour and happily ever after.

The Losers are a motley group of percussionists in the Boston area that make up a percussion ensemble and basically that was a Cougar/Jensen getting together story, there wasn't much beyond that. But Jensen was John's student and everyone knows Rodney McKay. The big music in this one was the title, Ionisation, which would've been great fun to describe.

MCU is the professional musicians in LA that sightread film scores. Good Omens is basically just Aziraphale and Crowley who are both soloists in their own right (Aziraphale on cello and Crowley on clarinet), who come to a PAC Northwest-like chamber music week and play Quartet for the End of Time with McShep. I never really did figure out a place for Leverage, though I tried for a long time. I haven't tried to do anything with my current C drama fandoms, though having them be members of the Beijing Symphony or teachers at the Beijing Central Conservatory would be cool, I think.

So yeah. That's my big "really desperately wish this could be done, but to be done I'd actually have to write it" WIP. :(

Day 8: Crack!fic - We all know it. What's your opinion of it, and if you want, show us an example.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE. I still profess [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan to be the queen of crack, but I've done a few myself. I tried a small one in the Supernatural fandom, but they just never took to it the way SGA did. So here is crackfic I have written: Clips and Clamps, SGA, 1209 words, gen, and one of MANY of my favorites of [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan's: Greenhouse AU, SGA, 4900 words over 4 stories.
kate: John=flyboy Rodney=geek (theirloveissoobvious) (SGA: John/Rodney flyboy/geek)
In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

Oooh, this one is always tough. All one fandom? All one pairing? Recent works vs favorite works?

I guess I'll rec things I'm proud of that I feel didn't really hit their target audience, for whatever reason.

The Grace Machine. Supernatural, Wincestiel, Explicit, 53,726 words. Summary: Sam closes the gates of Hell. Metatron kicks the angels out and closes the gates of Heaven.

When Sam's turned back from the pearly gates, he becomes something no one could have expected.

I like this story a lot. I worked really hard on it, spent a lot of time thinking through the worldbuilding (it's SPN canon, so we all know how many holes there are in that) and I just really, really like how it turned out. But for a number of reasons, it never hit its target audience, I think. I've always been sad that it lags behind my other Wincestiel stuff.

... and I can't actually find the other things I was thinking missed their audience, so here's some of the stuff I don't talk about much, or see in my kudos often anymore, I guess?

Secondhand Lions. Stargate: Atlantis, McShep, Mature, 7,652 words. Summary: John has the strangest way of showing up when Rodney least expects him.

Probably because it's not a super happy fic, in the end, this one gets skipped a lot. I like to think of it as bittersweet, but there's not a lot of love for non-straight up happily-ever-afters, particularly in SGA. I still love it a lot. (Be sure to read the warnings!)

The Games People Play. The Losers, Cougar/Jensen and Aisha/Clay/Roque, Teen, 4,013 words. Summary: A series of vignettes based on popular board game titles.

I dunno, I just really like this one. It's cute and the structure just turned out perfectly. It was one of those whizbang things that wrote itself in like, a couple hours, and I really enjoy it. *shrug*

Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples!

My favorite trope is found family/team. But, because I tend to gravitate toward canons where that is a theme, it tends to be a theme in almost all the fanworks I like to consume (or at least a vast majority). So that said, I think my next favorite trope is fake dating/marriage. I could literally read hundreds of thousands of these. I probably have. Below are some of my very favorites.

Stargate: Atlantis
Ordinary Life by [archiveofourown.org profile] astolat and [archiveofourown.org profile] Speranza. McShep, 20,043 words, explicit.
THIS FIC, Y'ALL. This is one of my top 3 SGA fics of all time. Pieces of it come up all the time in my daily live. Port Salut cheese will always remind me of this. Seeing Raytheon anything will mean I say "I know who Raytheon are," in zoetrope's accent. Like, I just love everything about this fucking fic. And the podfic by [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope

No Refunds or Exchanges by [archiveofourown.org profile] astolat. McShep, 10,659 words, explicit.
Shit, I just realized I totally used this title for an SPN fic I wrote, heh. Whoops. Anyway, this is amaaaaaazing and I like it a lot because in it, Rodney is just a decent human being with principles and it's kinda nice. I mean, I like a lot of other things about it, but the Rodney with a moral compass is nice. Also you can tell how old it is by Rodney's full name on the marriage certificate, heh.

The Losers
This Side of Paradise by [archiveofourown.org profile] thefourthvine. Jensen/Cougar, 17,031 words, explicit.
This is a Yuletide fic, and it's so fun. I think mostly because Jensen is so certain Cougar is straight.

Imaginary Boyfriend by me! Cougar/Jensen, 4,713 words, teen.
Stealth crossover with Criminal Minds, White Collar, Psych, and Leverage. Based on an ad I saw for Imaginary Boyfriends. This was such a blast to write.

Supernatural
Come on baby, let me know by [archiveofourown.org profile] Lenore. Wincest, 6,572 words, explicit.
I'll just leave you with this summary: They don't just have to pretend to be gay. They have to be the gayest!

Fake It Til You Make It by me! (Yep, TWO self-recs!) Wincestiel, 33,467 words, explicit (but for violence and warnings - PLEASE NOTE THE WARNINGS - not sex).
This one started as a fun romp and turned into a "I want to fix everything about Sam and Dean ever." It was fun and then cathartic to write, so there's that. Plus there's a gay cruise.

Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

Oh man, okay. I have so many things that I adore, it's tough to limit it to three, but time is not on my side. I have SO MUCH to do. Okay, let's pick one favorite per fandom.

1. Supernatural: So many many great fics, but I'm going to choose The Place of the Lion by [archiveofourown.org profile] De_Nugis. Sam/Castiel. There is nothing I like more than their take on Castiel, except maybe how they portrays Sam. Honestly, read all their Sastiel stuff (and Sam/OMC stuff) - it is great. The earlier Wincest stuff is great too, though it clearly reflects an earlier time in the show.

2. Leverage: Parachute, my very favorite Leverage OT3 vid, by [personal profile] thingswithwings. It has literally everything, and the vid has such a clear, wonderful narrative.

3. Stargate Atlantis: Day-Night Time Difference by [archiveofourown.org profile] chkc. I love all of chkc's stuff, and I would highly recommend looking through their works.

kate: a hedgehog with a santa cap and candy cane scarf (holiday: Christmas hedgie)
I got SO MUCH cool stuff, you guys, SO MUCH!!!

Everything from gluten-free recipes to lots of cute and fun graphics for season's greetings!

[personal profile] monanotlisa gave me hedgie wallpaper, omg I LOVE, [personal profile] leesa_perrie made a gorgeous and perfect snowed in picspam, and [personal profile] lightbird gave me a lovely Christmas tradition story and set of beautiful snowy pics.

As if that wasn't enough to make me smile to the ends of the earth, a few lovely people made fanworks for me, and they are all so good!

[personal profile] valarltd gave me a lovely 3-work Leverage OT3 rec set (the fic is amaaaaaazing Parker.

[personal profile] lilly_c made me Big Hero 6 icons. (;salfkjsa;dlfkjas;ldkfjs;ldfkj BAYMAX. BAYMAX AND HIRO. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D I AM GRINNING SO BIG HERE!)

[personal profile] tarlanx made a gorgeous Cas & Dean wallpaper. (Ugh, Cassssssssssssssssss and Dean unconscious, just... ugh, so perfect.)

[personal profile] mific expanded upon her Leverage OT3 tentacle art to add a little spicier version. (Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh OT3 + tentacles OMG OMG OMG!!! *claws eyes out*)

[personal profile] omens arted me Jody and Donna having movie night. (;ssdkfljads;lkfjas;ldfkjas;dlkfjs;dlfkj fffffuck, Donna and Jody, I don't think you understand - Wayward Daughters is the only SPN shirt I will wear in public with ABSOLUTELY NO SHAME.)

[personal profile] curiouscorvid's fic Silver Balls is a hysterical outside POV on Destiel decorating the tree naked (off a flailosaurus prompt). SO. ADORABLE. So cute, so much awesome Sam in a Destiel fic. LOooooOOOoooooVE.

[personal profile] parcequelle made a Leverage/Buffy fusion, where Parker's the slayer, Sophie's the watcher, and Eliot and Hardison are the scoobies. The One Girl Job is both amazing in terms of how well the crossover works and also in how sweetly heartwrenching it is in such a short, seemingly silly premise.

I will NEVER not ask for Nightside stuff in [community profile] fandom_stocking because a couple year's back, I got the amazing Teddy Bear's Graveyard about Jessica Sorrow from [archiveofourown.org profile] anonymous_sibyl, and this year, I got a ficlet about John/Suzie/Eddie from [personal profile] katarik where they are SO PERFECTLY DRAWN. HOW DO PEOPLE DO THIS?! I have never received a fanwork in the Nightside fandom that hasn't been amazingly done. And some year, someone is going to make me Dead Boy art, and I will die.

[personal profile] senmut wrote me the most delightful Jenkins backstory ficlet in the Librarians fandom, and I absolutely looooooove that mostly it is not actually giving us any backstory. It's such delightful characterization, and THE LIBRARIANS!!!! :D :D :D :D

And last, but oooooohhhhhh so not least, [personal profile] citrusjava made me THE MOST PERFECT Wincestiel/Project Runway fusion/crossover/thingee!!! I Know Who You Did Last Summer has Cas making SOCKS. SOCKS. I DON'T THINK YOU UNDERSTAND. *cries* And then Sam losing it and Cas and Dean going after him and just... no. THIS IS PERFECT. *clutches it to chest*

I am so so so so grateful for this fest every year, you guys. I just love making stuff for people (list under the cut, because this post isn't about that), and then I get all this amazing stuff in return, and just seeing the outpouring of fannish joy makes me tear up. Every. Year. *happy siiiiiiiigh*

Stuff I made this year, two podfics and six fics in SGA, Leverage, a Buffy/Heroes crossover, and, of course, Supernatural. )

I've done a lot of recs over the course of the fest, so I think here I'm just going to rec three vids that bring me great joy.

I Need a (Supernatural) Hug, a vid about Sam and Dean hugging by [livejournal.com profile] ash48.

This vid just makes me grin so big. I love it so so so much. Probably because jeez, if anybody in the world needs a hug, it's the Winchesters.

My Brilliant Idea, McShep vid by lim (who has wonderful wonderful MCU vids, too).

This vid! OMG seriously, it is my very favorite McShep vid EVER. It is SO GOOD and SO PERFECT and SO THEM. I love them so much, and the song just makes me fucking laugh, EVERY TIME. I love it.

Embedded under here )

Parachute, Parker/Hardison/Eliot vid by [personal profile] thingswithwings.

This is such an amazing vid. It is so perfectly blocked and paced and makes me just so happy every time I watch it (and I rewatch it ALL THE TIME). It is the perfect reduction of canon I have ever seen and just so so so happy-making.

Oh man. This is always a tough one for me because I really love everything. I read very widely and I enjoy most tropes when either done well or turned on their head. I love it when an author or artist takes a trope and does exactly the opposite of what you were expecting. That is my favorite. I like dark stuff and angsty stuff and fluffy stuff and funny stuff, so really, I will happily read any trope if it is well written.

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm still trying to figure out how, exactly, I found my way to fandom. I started fanwriting when I was five. (I wrote a story that was basically: Fonzie does an Evil Kneivel type trick on his motorcycle, and SLAMS INTO A BRICK WALL AND DIES! I was five. Writing tragedy and deathfic. What the hell.) Also - I shared this story with my mother, who looked at me funny but didn't make me do anything like see a child psychologist or anything, so I kept writing stories. Mostly in my head after that, and mostly self-inserts into Star Wars and the like.

Teenagerhood was bizarre. I would've been hugely multifannish, if there'd been an internet back then (I think) and then I might have figured out that I was actually in love with KITT, not David Hasslehoff.

Weirdly, once I went to college, I seem to have turned off my fannish interest. I think I just didn't have time. Music school is fucking all-consuming, yo.

I got back into it around 1999 - with, of all things, The Mummy. I found a Brendan Fraser fangroup and wrote some fiction. (RPS! Though I didn't actually want to have sex with Brendan, so I wrote us doing Tai Chi together. I wish this still existed in the world.)

From there, I moved into Buffy, where I joined a mailing list and started reading fanfiction - including slash! I was a Buffy/Spike shipper, but I found some Spike/Xander fic which made me do a Castiel-style headtilt, and then Spike/Angel (or Angelus) fanfic that made me go: OMG YES THIS ALL OF THIS FOREVER WHAT IS THIS EVEN?!!?!?!? D:

And then The Mummy 2 came out, and I started writing a script for The Mummy 3. (Mine would've been SO MUCH BETTER than the one they actually made.) I wrote other stuff, too, mostly self-insert (and my self-insert was always the best friend or maternal figure or helper person because I really did want to be besties with these people, not have sex with them).

Then Lord of the Rings happened, and I found a group of super-awesome folks to get involved with (and got initiated into LJ), started writing even more self-insert stories (still thinking they were basically original fiction at this point, ahahaha oh, no), and then. And then! [livejournal.com profile] gayalithiel came onto the scene and we started writing a sprawling vampire universe populated with our favorite actors. Vampire Greg. (Long story for another time.) And seriously, we wrote SO MUCH. I was so heavily into that universe. I still look back and think I could turn it into something really cool - we had some really neat ideas and did just buttloads of research and background work. Maybe someday.

And then - I finally broke the fanfiction barrier. 10 years ago, this past Christmas eve. I posted my very first fanfic, and Alexander (2004) FPS/RPS thing for the girl who would become my ex-girlfriend. I wrote a fair number of shorts in that fandom, most dedicated to her, and then everything there fell apart and my writing mojo completely dried up.

Thankfully, I got out of the bad situation, and writing came back, slowly but surely. And when my future wife introduced me to SGA, I never looked back. I have 290 works on the AO3, and 134 of them are SGA. We moved to DW pretty much the second it opened its doors, and it's become my fannish home. I'm still trying to wrangle other platforms, and I think I've pretty much come up with this (subject to change):

[personal profile] kate: my fannish and personal home; where my friends are; where I post about squeeful things and RL things and just about everything
[archiveofourown.org profile] kisahawklin: where all the fic is kept
[livejournal.com profile] kisahawklin: I keep this only for the few friends and fests only on LJ. Someday it may become obsolete, but not yet.
[twitter.com profile] kisahawklin: pretty much exclusively for SPN tweeting and watching the cast live-tweet shows
[tumblr.com profile] kisahawklin: I get the appeal, now. Mostly for SPN and definitely for all things visual. Still learning my way around there.

And... that's that, I guess? There should probably be a note up there about falling into the incredible Losers fandom, and moving into Supernatural, but I think I've covered those enough before. YAY FANDOM! :D :D :D :D

ETA: I always seem to start blathering and then miss parts of the question! Kisa Hawklin is the name of my first D&D character and has been my online moniker since I got online, back in 1993. I do have two pseudonyms, and I challenge anyone to figure out who they are. One is almost 11 years old and the other is at least 5. Both have works posted at the AO3. (Some of my favorites, actually. I may eventually pull the 11 year old pseud into kisahawklin, but we'll see.) I doubt anyone would ever guess them, though (and have at - good luck with that!).

My [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa fic got posted! It is so cool! I am bad with naming this sort of thing; it's an AU where there are houses and people are dressed in uniforms and frilly dresses and there's all the formality all the time, and the whole story is from Cadman and Aiden's POV and yet sweetly McShep, just... so lovely. The world-building is fascinating, I will always be amazed at people who can do it in such a short space like that. Lovely! Won't you go read?

Caput, PG, McShep, Cadman and Aiden heavy.

So delightful!

First off! I love it. Whatever you've got in mind, I love it. I'm soooooo not kidding. You're making something special for me, you're putting your heart into it. I LOVE IT. No matter what it is. My #1 ironclad rule about exchanges is that I want you to enjoy what you are creating. I will love it for that reason alone. If you're having a hard time of it, scrap everything and just write something that brings you joy.

I seriously read and write everything, so whatever it is you write, no matter how angsty or fluffy, I will read and love it. I love permanent injury fic or deathfic or noncon (I have a thing especially for bondage and AMTDI and impossible choices (and the aftermath of said situations)) or slice-of-life, holiday fics, and domestic fics (I am a fan of domestic fics where nothing more than cooking dinner happens, kidfic, team movie nights). Or mysteries, casefic, missionfic, horror, humor, PWP (gimme the tentacles, ALL THE TENTACLES), if you can think of it, I will love it. I guarantee.

Even my do not likes are not ironclad (except scat) - I like A/B/O that has some interesting twist on it - a way to turn the system on its head. Mpreg isn't horrible, I just prefer that you not focus on the pregnancy part too too much. If you want to have one or the other person just being attentive to the other, or a "how did Rodney get pregnant?!?!!" fic, that's totally cool! Humiliation (especially with John) has been done beautifully and I've loved it, so it's not a complete no-go either. So if you think you have a way to make me love my DNW list, GO FOR IT. Just please, don't write scat. That's one I'm not really interested in learning to love.

I like to give a lot of suggestions as jumping off points, so don't feel like you have to do any of the scenarios suggested above. They're just my attempt at giving inspiration, ways to get the wheels turning, or the muse to spread their fairy dust, or whatever. I don't necessarily want those exact scenarios (though I certainly wouldn't turn them down!), I just want to give you ideas that will inspire something you really want to write.

Have fun, and I can't wait to see what you make. <3

One last logistical note: If you're looking for me, I'm actually over on dreamwidth at [personal profile] kate, but there's not a lot about SGA there anymore (though I do have a dear creator letters tag that might give you even MORE ideas (because there aren't enough of those floating around)). And if you want to see what I like to read and write, I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] kisahawklin at the AO3, and here are my bookmarks.
kate: Aang :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD (AtLA: Aang grinning)
And done well! If you've got any suggestions, hit me.

So you may be able to tell from the subject line that I am planning on signing up for [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa. It's the last year, and I don't want to miss out. Come join the fun! It's a last huzzah for a fandom that I loved deeply for many years, so I am excited to see everything that comes out of it. (A small part of me hopes one of the newer fen takes up the mantle and organizes it next year (though I won't likely play), but I suppose we'll see come next year.)

I'm also finishing up my Team Free Will big bang. I got past the hard sex, so now I'm hoping I can finish the story up this weekend, mostly.

Also on my docket:

My femslash exchange gift

Finishing S9 of SPN (season premiere on Tuesday, SO EXCITE!)

Checking out my work's record-a-web-meeting stuff to see if I can edit the final product. Because if so:
SETTING UP A RECORDING WITH SIX PEOPLE TO DO A MULTI-PERSON READ OF THAT AWESOME CROWLEY FANFIC STORY THAT I RECCED THE OTHER DAY. Want to be one of the six people? Comment here! Characters we need: Crowley, Dean, Sam, Charlie, Cas, and a narrator to read the title, fandom, warnings, summary, etc. (so comment with which one you think you would be best at reading (I think I'd do Sam the most justice, but I'd be willing to try Cas or Charlie)). [personal profile] omens and [personal profile] lunesque I'm looking at you! You don't have to have done podfic before - we'll all just call into this meeting and I'll start recording, and scroll the script down the screen as we go. IT'LL BE FUN! COME PLAY WITH US!

Hallo hallo hallo!

Thank you, dear creator, for making something for me! I am SO EXCITED to receive some femslash made just for me. Seriously, this is the best idea EVER.

So, my first, ironclad rule about exchange pieces is that I want to make it as stress-free for my creator as possible. I love all kinds of fic and art, so don't feel like you have to include everything (I don't honestly think that'd be possible) or even anything from the lists and prompts below. Optional details are optional! If none of this works for you, please, throw it out the window and go with something you want to do. I guarantee I'll love it, and I'll enthuse all over you in the comments.

Okay, with that out of the way, then, let's get on with it! I do like to list all kinds of things, throwing it all at the wall to see what sticks. If something sparks you, great! If not, see rule #1 up there.

A few general likes and dislikes, to maybe help you on your way.

Likes (These change all the time, and I like a lot more things than I can ever think of when I'm writing these letters, so if it's not here, don't fret, I probably like it!)

Pretending to be married/arranged marriages
Found family, especially within teams that have to work together
Friends and family outside the main relationship
Cooking and food
Redemption
Competence
Relationships between equals (anti-power imbalance, maybe?)
Water (swimming, showers, bodies of water, anything)
Pets and/or kids
Picnics
Crossovers
Well-drawn AUs
Dub-con when both parties are actually interested and just need a push to be together
Asexual characters
All ratings - porn, while I enjoy it, is not necessary if you'd rather not make it
Porn/kink likes, if you want to write that (for non-antagonistic relationships): bondage, especially hands or holding down, wallsex, begging, strap-ons, shaving, cunnilingus, sweet, positive sex talk, snuggling and cuddling after.
Porn/kink likes for antagonistic couples: I LOVE power imbalance, a toppy-dom taking advantage of their position of power and reveling in making the weaker lady(ies) submit, fighting into fucking, marking, bondage, holding down, begging, strap-ons, dildos or jury-rigged dildo with whatever's on hand.

Dislikes (these are weirdly specific to femslash - there's a whole essay in there about why I don't mind dark, dark, dark dudeslash fics and am not really interested in dark femslash, but unfortunately not in this letter)
Abuse
Non-con
Suicide
Deathfic
Slavery

Generally I'm not a fan of A/B/O, but I might actually be interested in it when it's not all about the dudes. If that's your thing, or you think you might want to do a take on it, have at!

So, remember that writing meme that I didn't answer? I decided I was going to do audio answers to all the questions, because I had to drive home (I think this was from St. Louis?) and I needed something to do. There was a question, of the fic you’ve written, of which are you most proud? which I did actually manage to answer (in 15 minutes of meandering around the topic).

Click here to stream 15 minutes of me babbling about things I'm not proud of, things I am proud of, and why I'm proud of my Variations on a Theme of John Sheppard series.

Summary of the audio file, for those who don't want to listen to me babble in a kinda loud car: I'm generally relatively proud of things I do - the only things that I really am not proud of are some of the shorts I wrote for [community profile] episodic_supernatural, [livejournal.com profile] sga_episodefic, and [livejournal.com profile] 15minuteficlets because they didn't have any structure or purpose. Even my shorts, like the Dean cross-dressing fic, are complete fics where I am trying to accomplish some particular objective. So anyway - that's to say, I'm proud of most of what I put out there.

I have a bunch of fics that I count as things I'm really proud of, and I'll read one of my old ones every once and a while and be really pleased with it, but one that always comes to mind when people ask me of things I'm proud of is Variations on a Theme of John Sheppard and its sequels. Basically I am proud of what I tried to accomplish and how I did it (with many, many spreadsheets). The last complete story, Passacaglia, is one of my favorite things ever - moving a story forward through multiple POVs and a variety of scenarios in their universe-hopping puddle jumper. I'm ridiculously proud of how it turned out.

This is hilarious timing! Especially because I've been going back to tag reeeeeeeeeeeeally early posts (imported from LJ) and a lot of them are this weird not-quite-original fic based on a fanfic that a friend wrote. It was this sprawling vampire universe that I still kinda love but needs to be rewritten from the get-go (for the fourth or fifth time now). Even that wasn't written entirely for me, a lot of it was written for or with [livejournal.com profile] gayalithiel. Still, it was really inspiring, and I had a hell of a lot of fun.

I generally write for other people (probably half of my fics are gifts), and even when I write fic that comes from my own plot bunnies, it's because I think other people will enjoy it, too. There is one fic, though, that I started writing shortly after my best friend's wife was diagnosed with MS. Between that and my dad dying a few months before (infection finally overtook him; his heart transplant meant he was immunosuppressed) and my aunt dying a few months before that (of ALS), I started a McShep fic where Rodney had MS. I was planning to trace their relationship from Rodney's first symptoms to his death (many years later). I had many scenes in mind that really helped me deal with all those things, and writing that fic was clearly for me, and it was very cathartic. I didn't finish it - it went stale with all my other SGA stuff, but I posted what I got done and an outline for the rest of the fic as part of my Unfinished and Discontinued series:

Unfinished sick!Rodney fic (12721 words) by kisahawklin
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: John Sheppard, Rodney McKay
Additional Tags: Terminal Illnesses, Angst, Abandoned Work - Unfinished and Discontinued
Series: Part 26 of Unfinished and discontinued fic
Summary: Rodney starts to have trouble at work and John has to figure out what to do.
Author's notes: Started this when I found out my best friend's wife had been diagnosed with MS. Between that and my dad's death a couple of years before, this fic was extremely therapeutic for me. I meant for it to come out the other side - it was going to end on them being reincarnated and toddling around Atlantis - but I didn't get there. Outline of the whole concept at the end.

Ahahahaha - my best friend just called me! His wife is doing well and we're going to dinner in a couple of weeks. :D

2012 2013

So I have a tradition of using this for my [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa and Yuletide reveals, but I didn't do either of those this year. I would use my two pieces for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas, but I'm not really feeling it (probably because I still don't have a comment from my recipient on one of them). So this year I'm just going to pick out some of my personal favorites.

I really like most of my podfic, but Strangers on a Six Train (SGA, John/Rodney, PG-13, ~1 hr) is still one of my very very favorites - I like the sound effect I used, and I'm really pleased with my reading, and it was my very first one ever (and of course it was for podfic big bang, ha!). It's just a really great story that I had a lot of fun reading.

I don't always like my writing when I'm trying something new (genre, style, POV, whatever), but the antechamber of another world (Losers, Cougar/Jensen, R, 11,876 words) is my first steampunk-esque fic, and while it's not perfect, I really like it a lot.

Variations on a Theme of John Sheppard and its sequels (SGA, John/Rodney, NC-17, 32,130 words) are probably my favorite SGA fics. I had such a great time writing them, I liked where they went in the end, and generally I find them the most satisfying of all the stories I've written in that fandom.

Someone who will remain nameless (until she gives permission for me to put her name up) and I are going to do the 10 in 10 challenge that [personal profile] astolat's... hosting? It was her idea, anyway, and I'm totally going to do it because the words haven't been coming and you know how it is after a while where you just need anything to get you moving again? And I have two massive fanworks I need to finish with deadlines, so I'm doing this. Anyone else wanna join me? I'm going to write some new stuff, finish a WIP, or maybe more, if I can find some nearly-finished stuff in my folders. And I’m going to try and write some of my Wincestiel BB and my other ginormous fic too, should this all go the way it’s supposed to.

So anyway, here are my current ideas for things I think I can maybe do in a single day. To be updated when I can look in my WIP folder back at the hotel. )

So who’s with me?! Come on, you know you want to!

Hi dwircle!

Long time no see, I know. Sorry about that – we’ve hit a submission cycle here and I’m ridiculously busy. I have a bunch of hilarious stories that I keep meaning to post about, but my workload is at Hopkins levels, so I’m pretty much reduced to: work, veg in front of the TV, go to sleep, repeat ad nauseum.

I really hate being so completely wasted at the end of the day that I can’t do anything fun or interesting. If it is more complicated than spider solitaire, I’m unable to do it. I’m still writing here and there – finished a piece for McShep Match – but not regularly during the week, I’m too braindead.

But, I’m at work, surrounded by deadline applications (due tomorrow, the three I have left haven’t even uploaded their science yet), and I need to take some time thinking about something else or I will explode. So here, have an update.

Stuff I’ve been watching. )

Holy crap! Just found out that Drum Corps International finals are this weekend! :D :D :D As Indianapolis is now only a 4 hour drive, I am seriously debating going down to see the semis on Friday (with [personal profile] soleta, sounds like!). The finals are on Sunday, and since I fly out at ridiculous o'clock AM, that's just not happening. But I could see the semis on Friday afternoon/evening. THAT WOULD BE AMAZING. Any locals want to go with me?

ETA: Actually, the finals are Saturday night, so we'll probably be going to those, instead, they start at 5:25pm. Who's coming?

(And a seasonal plug, because I am so damn proud of it: my SGA drum corps fic.)

One of the things I've noticed about a lot of the vids I've been watching is that the songs are just Too. Damn. Long. There are a lot that start out strong but then either end up losing coherency in the middle or repeating clips over and over. Seriously, if you only have a couple minutes' worth of material, why are you choosing a song that's four and a half minutes long? Cut out the bridge if it doesn't fit. Do you really need twelve choruses? No, of course not! I find it funny that a lot of vidders (and this is just youtube, I don't believe this is anywhere near the best and the brightest of fandom, Festivids has shown me quite clearly that there are vidders who do this sort of thing, and do it well) don't think to cut the song up the way they cut clips up. You have to have an ear to do it, because you can't just mash two parts of a song together unless they work harmonically (or unless you're looking for a jump cut, which, musically is a little weird, but I'd love to see someone make work), but I imagine that most vidders have a pretty good ear, it's part of the job to make the clips and the music work together.

ETA: This wasn't really me bemoaning the entire vidding community, though I grant you it sounds like it (it was 2:30am, please cut me a teenie bit of slack). ESPECIALLY since I don't do this. I don't generally criticize (another reason this post is even here - I would never have posted this if I had been sober non-sleep-deprived). I certainly don't critique things I don't do, which, at least for now, and likely for a long time yet, is all vidders ever - even the people who made the vids I don't particularly like are obviously waaaaaaaay ahead of me, as I've never even tried it. This was me making an obvservation about vids that I was watching on one particular medium (one I think is maybe similar to FF.net in some ways? as it seems that the vids are generally of a lower quality than those of, for example, Festivids, a lot of which were hosted on vimeo and other sites (my vimeo experiences in general have been quite lovely!)). And [personal profile] busaikko points out below that editing music is harder than I think (which is not a surprise to me, not at all), and that a lot of folks don't have the time or resources to be able to do it effectively. If I figure out how to do it, I am going to make a giant meta post on how to edit music, because I want people to be able to do this so they can tell the stories they want to tell and aren't constrained by their resources. /ETA

I pretty much intend to edit my songs, probably fairly early on in the process and maybe some later, if there's clip trouble. I have a feeling I will be editing the shit out of the music a lot to accommodate my ideas (I tend to have ideas for parts of songs, with other parts of those same songs that are completely inappropriate for the concept).

So anyway - rec me some vids? I'm stuck on Supernatural at the moment, so of course I'd love some truly amazing stuff there (any pairing or RPF (also any pairing) or gen of either), but I won't turn down any suggestions for amazing vids. I only have a couple that come to mind, but My Brilliant Idea by [livejournal.com profile] lim (SGA, McShep) is my favorite to date. Plus lots of multi-fandom things by [personal profile] thingswithwings because xie's amazing. Also, I just recced [personal profile] cupidsbow's Red Right Hand, Dean/Castiel.
