Quick other notes: [community profile] fandom_stocking is live, and I haven't had a chance to get to the AMAZING stuff over there, but I will do that today and post about ALL THE AMAZING THINGS and also hopefully some squee about TV stuffs. I have to get back to work right now, but just a quick Snowflake thing because I don't want to fall behind on this.

In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I think the best thing is how it has opened my horizons in every possible way. When I first started reading fanfic, I read vanilla het. Now I've written and read just about every variety of 'ship that's out there. I also have written and read kinks I would never have IMAGINED when I started reading. I've learned more about every social justice idea out there, and that was a really great eye-opener, which I am still building on and learning about. So yeah, to say fandom has made me an entirely different person is an understatement. The surprise is how much more there is to fandom than just fanworks and squee. The people in fandom are incredible and have taught me so much.

In case you want to play along!

Opened horizons, yes!!! When I first started reading fanfic I kept drawing lines in the sand as to what (I thought) I would never read, and then rubbing them out and drawing new ones. You know that question on the end of year meme, 'Holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you’ fic? My answer is usually some version of n/a, because I haven't yet met a line I could move. *g*

Ha, in 2013 I wrote, Uhm, yeah, I got nothing. Everything I write is just the right amount of wrong. *g*

This seems to be a common theme, it just goes to show how open minded we all are that we've deviated into slash and kinds and enjoyed them, despite any intial hesitation. Fandom is such a wonderful place :)

Basically, what you said! I'd only read vanilla het as well and had ZERO IDEA about what was out there, and what I could possibly be interested in, and fandom has always been so welcoming and understanding and open - at least the aspects that I interact with. I love having people to squee with, and swap recs, and warn me what eps require kleenex. :P
