The Fandom Snowflake Challenge Day 13

In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some."

I'm going to go back and do days 9-12, but in my own time. This one, though. Well.

Okay, if you've been hanging around here, you've probably noticed my downward slide into Supernatural. I don't think a lot of folks on the dwircle are massive SPN fans, but I know I have a few, and I know that at least some of you have read pretty widely. So what I'm looking for is Supernatural recs. Right now I'm not ruling anything out, so whatever you like, any ship, gen, RPS or canon, whatever you love, I want it.

My only caveat: please no character bashing, or killing of female characters to get to the boyslash. I know there is a lot of wife-hate out there, and there is nothing that will make me back out of a fic faster than hating on women.

Um, I might be that massive SPN fan. :)

I recommend:
- everything sporting the rec: sam/dean and rec: dean/castiel tag in my DW
- I wasn't crossposting from DW before I started the just-finished recs project, however, so there are actually more recs in my LJ prior to 1/1/2012, particularly on the rec: dean/castiel tag there [ETA: but the same goes for the rec: sam/dean tag too]
- Since you mention having a penchant for fics that have been jossed, I'll tell you I have a really intense obsession with fic written after Castiel appeared but before we knew his vessel was Jimmy Novak. There is only a handful of these fics out there, but those that exist are amazing. I wrote up a rec post of what I could find here: http://mementis.livejournal.com/7668.html

- Almost everything written by astolat

Also, if you're interested in writing in this fandom, and can go long, sign-ups for this year's (7th!) spn_j2_bigbang opened just a couple of days ago. It's my favorite challenge, anywhere. It's massive and well-run and chock-full of talent.

Awesome! I knew I had a couple of big SPN fans out there! :D I've betaed for a friend of mine for J2 big bang, I don't know that I have anything to say about the RPS, not to the tune of a big bang, anyway, but it's always good reading, definitely. Can't wait.

Thanks for the recs! I will take any more you've got, definitely, and any meta (there's got to be some great SPN meta out there, right?), vids, whatever. And your own ramblings, too. I come from SGA and a lot of my flist is either still there or on to Avengers or Teen Wolf; I missed the Supernatural train back in the day so I'm short on people to squee with. Also, it embarrasses my wife so we don't discuss it except for snarky exchanges about how she can't hold her head up in public, heh.

Been there, with my kid and several of my friends. Snobs, I say! ;) (Actually, what's sad is that under normal circumstances I'd agree with them, but what can you do?)

Anyway.

I might be misunderstanding and maybe this isn't necessary, but I wanted to clarify: the big bang isn't just for RPS. It's supposed to encompass both fictional people and RPF, including AU's and fusions (just not crossovers). So if you do find you have something to write in the SPN universe, in-canon or out, that works. There are several other challenges throughout the year, too - deancasbigbang (that also takes RPF, AFAIK), spn_reversebang (where the prompt is fanart and the fic comes after, like the sgareversebang) and so on.

In fact, what I think might help is if you check out the spnnewsletter - it's daily and very active. Its listing of comms it's monitoring was a lifesaver for me, way back.

For meta, I'd try browsing through spn_heavymeta - and yes, there's a ton :D - but also through individual journals especially on the nights the show airs. Reaction posts are a big thing.

Finally, I'm not sure where you are on the DW/LJ split, but SPN is definitely much more heavily represented on LJ than on DW. Also, there's a con (wincon for the message board) in October (2013: Las Vegas). It switched to a multi-fandom format in 2010, but it's still mostly attended by SPN fans, AFAIK. This is over and above the tremendously long list of Official SPN cons throughout the year (a good list here).

Oh, huh, I hadn't realized J2 was... well, more than J2 (which is what I relate to Jared/Jensen). Awesome. I don't have the time right now - too many things to finish up, ugh - but you never know. Something could happen in there somewhere. Stuff like this tends to catch me by surprise.
