kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (yuletide)

So, I received the most delightful Christmas card from Teyla - and the rest of the team and Torren (translated and mailed by [personal profile] wintercreek). OMG, it was amazing. I left it in Baltimore, so I can't type it up for you all, but I will do so when I get back to town.

I also received an e-card from the delightful [personal profile] auburn and it is gorgeous.

Also, I have had two fics written for me in two exchanges (and clearly my yuletide gift will be here in a couple of days). I've also written fic for three exchanges, and I'll put up a post later for you to guess which ones are mine.

In [livejournal.com profile] cm_exchange, I received a lovely gen piece about Emily shopping for her teammates called Help to Make the Season Bright. A very nice, soft fic about Emily and how she views the team (within her trip to the mall).

For [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa, I received a fusion with A Wrinkle in Time that I love to death even though I don't know that story. /o\ If you do know that story, you will probably love it even more. It's called The Shortest Distance Between Two Points.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to anyone involved with the most lovely gifts above. <3

Yay! So glad you got the card and that you liked it!

(I, uh, may have taken pictures of the cards before I mailed them. So if you would like a blurry image of it, I can provide. *g*)

Thank you for sharing the Endicott Studio postcard--off I go to send a few. <3

Oh my god, Kate, you haven't read Madeleine L'Engle. I went and read the story--it was lovely--and now I've come back here to tell you that I absolutely love L'Engle's work. But it is more than that, and I will do my best to not sound crazy: I grew up with her books. They were given to me by a family friend as a set of four when I was about 7. I read the first two in the set then, A Wrinkle In Time and A Wind In the Door. I tried to read the third, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, but it was beyond me; when I tried it again at ten or eleven it became my favorite book ever. I read the fourth book in the series, Many Waters, at twelve or thirteen and *it* was my favorite book ever.

I've read most of her books by now, although there are still a few that I am keeping in reserve. In addition to the Murray-O'Keefe books (Wrinkle-Waters, plus a few stand-alones that touch on those families and an entire other series that begins with A House Like a Lotus and ends with An Acceptable Time), L'Engle also wrote a non-magical series (well, not very magical, anyway) about the Austin family (beginning with Meet the Austins and ending with Troubling a Star and a few miscellaneous stand-alone novels.

It is admittedly weird, but in all honesty these books entirely altered me as a kid. Most of my philosophical beliefs can be traced back to them. I still read a handful of them every year (my favorites are A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, A Ring of Endless Light [an Austin book], and An Acceptable Time, and no, I cannot narrow it past four favorites!). The writing is beautiful and the characters will be with me forever. I seriously cannot recommend this author more highly.
