My favorite piece of this year: We Three Kings, which was a real surprise. The serial aspect of it was really great, and I had a fascinating experience where I made a misstep in the story, asked the readers if they minded if I corrected it, and THEY SAID GO FOR IT! It was amazing. I talk about it in this post about serial fic.

My best piece this year: We Three Kings. All three long fics (WTK, The Grace Machine, Fake It Til You Make It) have successes and failures in them, but We Three Kings has several really great things about it, and the reveal in chapter 60 is definitely one of my favorite moments in the history of my writing.

Most fun piece: I wrote a lot of fun little ficlets for fandom_stocking, and Baby Needs a New Pair of Shoes is probably my favorite. Also, the first quarter of Fake It Til You Make It was a delight and a lot of fun. After that the angst hit and things got a lot more serious.

Most sexy piece: I think We Three Kings has the most sex, but not all of it is sexy, and proportionally, there's definitely less sex per word than something like The Grace Machine (which has, no shit, a 10k sex scene involving grace transfer). But the only PWP which is probably what this question is getting after, is Turning the Tables, a teen!chesters Wincest piece.

Piece with the single sexiest moment: Mmm, it depends on what you find sexy. I don't write a ton of porn so I only write stuff I find sexy. I like pretty much all of Turning the Tables, which is young Sam basically tricking Dean into making out and then sex. Chapter 78 of We Three Kings is Wincestiel + chocolate from Cas's POV, and I like that a lot. The Grace Machine has that grace exchange 10k sex bit that I enjoy a lot, too. So, you know. Whatever floats your boat.

Most depressing piece: No darkfic published this year, but Fake It Til You Make It actually had another 10k written that dealt with Dean's issues regarding sex with men and it was pretty dark (though it would've ended happily). I had to cut it out because I didn't have time to write the 20-25k to resolve the situation. So maybe that makes Fake It Til You Make It my most depressing piece because the ending is really rushed and not 100% fulfilling.

Piece that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: We Three Kings. Dean, mostly, because he ended up being more emotionally open than I expected. I think when you press really hard on his "nothing comes before Sam" button while still making things Destiel, interesting things happen. Also I had a very different feel about Sam's time in the cage for this story, so that was eye-opening as well.

Biggest Disappointment: I had a couple of disappointments with big bangs this year, and while one of them was a general bad experience with the mods/the artist I was working with, the other was just... a missed opportunity. I really feel like The Grace Machine is an interesting an beautiful story but it just never hit its audience, and that makes me super sad.

Biggest Surprise: I wrote a soulmark AU (Taste the Rainbow) and podficced another (Outliers). For someone who doesn't really like that trope so much, that's a lot!

Most Unintentionally Telling piece: Fake It Til You Make It pretty much showcases all the things I wish the show and/or Dean would acknowledge about Sam, and makes him apologize for them. Also a bit of backstory about Dean that I like because it honestly makes him more palatable to me.

Favorite opening line: From What Dreams May Come (The Magicians/Sense8 crossover for intoabar): Quentin spends a lot of time daydreaming, which means his actual dreams often suck in comparison, when he even has them.

Favorite closing line or paragraph: Three-way tie. From Taste the Rainbow: "Bringing the rainbow to your sad, pathetic little lives," Jensen told them, and Clay just shook his head and filled out the paperwork to make Jensen a permanent part of the team.
From The Hollywood Horde Job: Alec sits back in his chair and marvels at the how great his life is. Other people may have white picket fences and yappy little dogs, but he's got the world's greatest thief and the world's scariest hitter at home. That's more than enough for him.
