The Fandom Snowflake Challenge
Day 6: In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) and that you ended up loving.
So I don't know if I've talked about my boundaries with fic before, but it's been a kind of hilarious practice where I start doing something with an extremely limited set of parameters and then just keep expanding them until there's nothing left. I started fanfic reading with a het OTP and I pretty much read only that. Then I found slash, and was all !!!! Then I started multi-shipping (and read all these things I swore I never would, like incest and deathfic and noncon and... seriously, I don't know if there's anything I wouldn't read anymore (except unintentionally bad fic - I still back button out of stuff that I cringe at reading)).
Kink was interesting for me, I didn't think it was my thing, honestly, and I thought maybe I was just really vanilla. But then I read a few things and liked them, and then I read a few more things and liked them, and then there was
kink_bingo and suddenly I was writing kink and now I read and write most kinks. Here are three that at one point or another I just thought "no way" and was delighted to be proved wrong.
Watersports
I think this kink gets a bad rap, usually. I often see it trotted out as "...and no kink - like watersports!" I have to admit, bodily fluids aren't my favorite thing either (scatplay is one of my two long-term holdouts as something I can't bring myself to read yet), but then there were these fanworks and I changed my mind.

thingswithwings, a fantastic multi-fandom watersports vid.
fellas out there with ladies to impress by
busaikko (of course, and she could probably change my mind about anything - the things I have read because she wrote them, omg), an SGA John and Rodney non-ship fic. This is a hard fic, non-con, AMTDI, non-relationship and not leading to one, but somehow gorgeous too, and a truly well-adjusted happy ending. Please read the notes. ~3500 words.
And one I just picked up by clicking on the watersports tag at AO3 and reading through to see what might interest me - and the answer is, something by an author trust (
theleaveswant) even though I don't know the fandom (Farscape). Recycling by
theleaveswant, ~900 words of Aeryn and John in a desert, conserving water.
ETA: So you may have noticed from these three that I am also a huge admirer of non-sexual kink (sometimes sensual, sometimes not at all), so I do tend to rec stories that are kinky but not sexual (I do realize that's a little out of norm, so sue me).
toft recced this story in the comments and it is brilliant and sexy, so here, have another:
On Demand by
isagel, watersports, D/s, fandom Lewis (you do not need to know the fandom, though xie talks about it some in the notes and the comments), pairing Lewis/Hathaway, ~2500 words.
Play Piercing
I had never heard of this until
telesilla posted the story below, complete with links to some beautiful pictures. I am a voyeur, mostly, which is why fanfic works for me - I thought I'd be averse to kink because I am extremely averse to pain and to personally causing people pain. However, I am apparently not averse to watching or reading about (or writing about, now) people causing each other pain (consensual or not - this story is consensual).

Necrophilia
Okay, this one... talk about surprise. This is the most taboo of kinks, maybe? I discussed it with a friend and I remember my surprise when she told me this was her kink. I was like, what, vampires? And she said, no, not at all. I was intrigued by the conversation and I decided to see if I could write it for her; turns out I could, so this one is actually a self-rec. Major character death, necrophilia, dark, obviously.
