HAPPY PRIDE 2025! For Pride this year, we’re changing up our usual rec lists. Instead of doing books with specific identities or themes, we’re focused this time on cover color! Throughout the month of June, we’ll be doing 8 rec lists, each with covers inspired by one of the colors of the original Gilbert Baker Pride Flag. We drew a little additional inspiration from the meaning behind the color and why it was included in the original LGBTQIA+ flag (in this case, turquoise = magic), but we prioritized color over meaning. The contributors to this list are: May Barros, Rhosyn Goodfellow, Linnea Peterson, Tris Lawrence, Sebastian Marie, Shannon, Rascal Hartley, and Nina Waters.

6/21/25 07:15 pmluzulaI went around and took a few pictures of what we're growing! We had a long dry spell in the spring, which had me worried that there would be drought, but since then we've have some proper rainy weather, which is good. The dry spell made a dent in the slug population, so we've mostly escaped any serious damage (and the ducks do their part, as well). Now it’s sunny again, and most of our vegetables are doing quite well, although there are a few failures, of course.

6/21/25 03:53 pmpetraseascribble recommended a brilliant Murderbot series, shamoosh's sandbox environment, in which ART and Murderbot have all the Romantic feelings about each other. I got partway through it, flailing at the author and Sea the whole time, till I ran into:My code didn’t literally hide me from ART’s sensors, not the way I edited myself out of security footage and erased my trail in lesser systems. ART was too complicated and too powerful for that to work for long. Instead I’d gotten my drones to emit basically white noise for all of ART’s sensors. It knew where I was because that was obvious, but everything else was just junk data, erratic nonsense. It didn’t need to be convincing, it just needed to not be—whatever I was feeling/doing at the time. My code had worked perfectly. Maybe too perfectly.
And then I started singing Jonathan Coulton's Shop Vac song (animated text video | lyrics).

c_entHello, I am here to tell everyone about the greatest Hong Kong film I've ever seen, 1989's Into the Fire, about two bros from opposite sides of the tracks who find themselves together on the run from both corrupt cops and Triad gangsters! One is himself a Triad member, the other is a rich boy from a good family! They get knocked down, they get up again, they share some tender looks and a bathtub!

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 6/21/25 -- Temperature when we went out shopping was 94°F. Temperature in our yard is currently 88°F. Trees sweat so you don't have to!
EDIT 6/21/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio. The evening has started to cool off a little.
I've seen a mourning dove.
EDIT 6/21/25 -- I watered the patio plants and the ones in the house yard including the old picnic table.
Fireflies are starting to appear.
EDIT 6/21/25 -- I watered the telephone pole garden and the savanna seedlings.
More fireflies are out. :D

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

The Day in Spikedluv (Friday, June 29)
6/21/25 07:28 amspikedluvI got a lot done before I left to go visit mom. I did a load of laundry, baked chicken for the dogs, boiled eggs for egg salad, put a chuck roast in the crock pot for supper, did the usual amount of hand-washing dishes, and scooped kitty litter. For fun stuff I started a new book.
Temps started out at 59.4(F) (and windy) and reached 74 (that I saw at 6pm, though Pip said it got to 78). The day started off windy and cool, but the sun came out so it was really nice, if still windy.

Daily Happiness
6/20/25 10:56 pmtorachan1. Finally after all week feeling like each day should be Friday, it's really Friday!
2. Today actually wasn't too bad at work and wasn't a long day. Though I didn't end up getting to everything I wanted to get done, so I had to push a lot of things till Monday. They're not urgent things, so it's fine, but I feel like Monday is going to end up with a lot of things, especially since I have a meeting in the afternoon. But so far I have nothing scheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday, so hopefully one or the other can be a catch up day if I need it.
3. This is an irresistible spot for cats. A canvas bag on top of a plastic bin, which is itself on top of a pile of other bags, on top of a blanket, on top of a chest. Plus it's got a nice view of the sidewalk!

2025 Disneyland Trip #42 (6/18/25) Pride Nite
6/20/25 10:33 pmtorachanThis is the third year they've had an official Pride Nite at Disneyland. With only two dates each year, it's on a smaller scale than most of the other events, but still a lot of fun and I just love being there at the park when almost everyone (even many of the cast members working that night) is queer.
