Recently I was referring to a friend the tabletop RPG "René, le jeu de rôle romantique"
It's a French RPG about playing Romantic poets (and others), you can play it parodic or serious, the rules had made me laugh a lot when I was young. Regularly I'm in fandom where the characters are Overdramatic, and I think: you should be made into a René character.
I thought it was long lost!
But no, it still exists on the Internet! dates from February 2000
René, le Jeu de Rôles Romantique

As it's in French, for people who want to have a laugh, I want to summarize the character creation:
* Your three Attribute are your Rage, your Despair and your Inimical Old Age (your age, basically)
The first two change all the time, if they go too high they decide if you comit an act of madness/commit suicide.

* In addition to attributes, you roll 1d10/2 (round up) to know the number of your Problems, and then you roll into a big Problem table.
Are you a poet? (if so you have a minimum time writing or telling poetry every day). Are you naive? Homosexual? Republican? In love with a family member? Short? Obsessed with the occult? Badly dressed? An ecclesiastic? The list is... not exactly ensless but it's fun.

* All skills or powers are optional and give additional problems

* Last character creation step: choose an element of your character that flutters in the wind (hait, scarf; coat...)

(2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024)

2025 was the year I completely lost my writing mojo, and also the year of Zhang Kangle. For me, personally.

Just for the sake of completeness, I'm including things that were revealed in January, even though I already gathered them up in a separate post.

All the fanworks, and a lot of navel-gazing. )

I had a chiropractic appointment this morning. This would have been a no-shopping day, but I forgot one item crucial to tonight’s supper, so I stopped at Price Chopper and naturally bought a few other things. I also hit the post office (to mail a returned Christmas card because I screwed up the address *head desk*).

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. Supper was shake ‘n bake pork chops, which you cannot have without shake ‘n bake. Who knew? o_O

I tried the Raspberry tea this morning, since I was home long enough to drink a cup. It reminds me of the Pomegranate tea. I read more in Amelia Peabody and watched some HGTV (Fixer to Fabulous and House Hunters International) and Secrets of the Zoo.

I’m separating this out because it’s so exciting: I added ~1,700 words to my [community profile] smallfandomfest fic!! It was a ~really good writing day. Few and far between these days.

Temps started out at 34.5(F). It was still raining and all the schools in the county were delayed 2 hours, so it’s a good thing I had already planned to leave later. The roads weren’t too bad when I finally did head out. Temps reached 36.7, which is barely two degrees warmer than it was this morning. This is one of the reasons winter sucks.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded good on the phone. She’d just had a call from my brother and Sister A was visiting, so that was nice. She said the hospice visit was filling out a lot of paperwork and a brief overview. Thank goodness the hospice rep did all the paperwork. This woman (hospice rep) does our area and she worked with a woman we knew who recently passed away, and her daughter told Sister S that she was very good, so that’s good to know.

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

I'm going to add my voice to the Tumblr discussion. I've been on there since like 2013 or 2014, and I'm still there. Yeah, sometimes it's a hot mess, but blocking is easy and I've learned to curate my experience there and avoid the drama. I follow a lot of photographers/curators of photographs there, and they share gorgeous works that they or other people have created. I also still love the fandom gif and photo sets people put together (in particular, there have been a lot of terrific Star Trek:TOS sets lately), I love the cat posts of course, and so much terrific fandom meta and analysis of literature and media comes across my dashboard all the time, especially Shakespeare - there are a bunch of Shakespeare nerds on the site, and a mutual there is the one who organized the Shakespeare summer read that I've been participating in for a few years now. I also love how every year everyone celebrates the Ides of March. Artwork of the stabbing scene from Julius Caesar starts circulating a few days before, as well as pictures of Miette the cat with a knife in her mouth.

And who could forget the April Fool's Day Boop Fest? The Boop Button was an opt-in feature, so if people didn't want to participate they didn't have to, and it was just there for the one day. If you opted in, people could boop you. There was a boop-o-meter that showed how many boops you'd received and how many people you'd booped (with a little design of a cat). Whenever you hit the boop button on someone else's page to boop them, you'd see a cat's paw reach out and boop the screen. You could receive badges once you hit different numbers of boops (the badges all had a cat's paw in them). It was hilarious and a lot of fun.

I'll probably be on the site until the day it goes down in flames, lol.

1. We walked up to Layla for bagels this morning, only I didn't end up getting a bagel after all, because they have a new seasonal pastry, orange blossom babka. I love orange, so I couldn't resist, and it was definitely a good choice. The smell was very faint, so I wasn't sure how orangey it would actually taste, but it turned out to be very flavorful. I'm not sure I'll actually get it again, since I'm trying to not eat pastries for breakfast very often, but I would get it again if the opportunity every arose.

2. The front yard is covered in soooooo many berries. Just a gross carpet of berries. But I did manage to rake up quite a bit of it and get it into the yard waste bin for tomorrow's pickup.

3. Gemma looks so proud of her hunt lol.

Challenge 286:
WORKING TOGETHER
Some things can’t be done alone. Maybe it’s a project that needs multiple pairs of hands to make it work, maybe it’s a long-term quest to save the world that’s going to require a lot of people and a lot of skillsets, or maybe it’s as simple as a cat that needs at least two people to corral her into a carrier to go to the vet; whatever it is, it’s going to need some people to work together.

How are your characters at working together? Does it come naturally to them, or do they struggle? What are they working together for?

Write a story about working together.

BONUS GOAL: “You’re not alone.”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, January 12 at 9:00PM EST.
• Post submissions as new entries using the template in the profile
• Tag this week's entries as: [#] submission, 286 – working together

Five things about today:

1) I am very happy to have Josh Charles back on my TV
2) some days it's a very good thing to not have a chance to check the interwebs during the workday
3) morning walks are a LOT easier when it's warmish and sunny than when the temperature unequivocally says winter
4) my watch is telling me I'm asleep and I'm not sure it's wrong
5) apparently a song that I've loved for 40 years is about being gay and I didn't know lolol

There are several places along the Richmond shoreline I want to get to, and today I drove up to Wildcat Marsh Staging Area. It's very small but is adjacent to the marsh and Landfill Loop, and the trail to Landfill Loop passes a series of settling ponds or similar, the southern most of which has in the past had great birds. Unfortunately I could no longer see the western end or much of the water's surface. Not sure what's changed. I'd like to climb up the embankment but am not sure I can. To the west there are natural ponds in the marsh that I could see easily. So I saw shorebirds, lots of Black-necked Stilts and a few Greater Yellowlegs, but not ducks. The list: )

The trail continues east from the parking lot, under Richmond Boulevard, following Wildcat Creek (the same Creek as in The Nature Area) up into Alvarado Park. I don't think there a path along the entire length, certainly it's been buried for a Foodmax.:) Right now the water is very high but I hope to take a look at the western end when it's drier.

I made a few stops on the way home, in Miller/Knox Regional Park and at Meeker Slough, but didn't stay long at either place. At Miller/Knox there was a single Greater White-fronted Goose hanging with Canada Geese - omg so tiny! about half the size - who's been reported since the middle of December. At Meeker I could see Black Skimmers flying above the outer shore but that's a long ways away and I didn't count or report.

Of all the glimmers of Old Internet I come across these days, few made my jaw drop like TomCruiseFan.com did a couple years ago, because it'd been ages since I'd seen an honest-to-God tribute site - and my jaw dropped again when I saw how extensive and detailed it was. As much of a figure of fascination as Cruise is for me, the way people look at him - and I include myself in that - is its own subject worth examining, and beyond that, it's simply nice to see an old-fashioned fan's tribute site still kicking around. It pleases me to know there's still a few of those out there. The part of me that'd stay up late in college to browse screencap and icon galleries, especially.
