I'm having thoughts about serial fic.

So, back in 2014, I posted about my experience with writing a 12-chapter serial fic, and concluded, basically, that it's not for me. I did it once, and I might try it again, I thought, purposefully – to use the lessons I learned the first time around.

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. )

But you know, I went back and read that post and the comments from the last time I talked about serials, and there was this in the comments from [personal profile] nagasvoice: What I'm wondering: If you give a warning note for it, would it be okay with the community to fix larger problems? Is anybody going to hate it if you edit earlier chapters when you've run into snags that need changing?

So much blather under here (including spoilers for the story, FYI)! )

And final thoughts about serials – which amounts to basically 'I have changed my mind, and only partially because SPN is a fandom of serials.' )

So what do y'all think? Still feel the same about serials? Have different thoughts? Don’t really care one way or another?

*chinhands* Come talk to me.

Ante Up Losers!!!

OMG, thank you so much, my friend, for making a fanwork just for me. I love many, many things about The Losers, and exchanges, and this exchange in particular.

So first off, I would love absolutely ANYTHING you would like to make. Fic, art, podfic, meta, gifs, icons, interpretive dance, and macaroni castles. I love literally EVERYTHING that you might make that is in any way considered a fanwork and involves The Losers.

After that, I... have to admit that it's late, and I'm tired, and I want to post something for you (because I am excite!) but I am too tired to list out my (many) fandom loves. So I'll just say: if you are a person who generates your ideas easily and have something you've always wanted to create? CONSIDER THIS PERMISSION TO GO NUTS! I would LOVE to get anything like that for a gift.

If you are someone that prefers a bit of direction, I will (lazily, omg, I'm so sorry /o\) point you at my dear creator letters tag and the make this for me tag, where I outline lots of things I have always wanted. Feel free to pick and choose and mix and match and throw it all in a blender if you like.

Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I hope you are as excited for this exchange as I am! <3

*pokes nose in here*

I should be writing but I am avoiding it. I've just gotten to the porn and, as often happens to me, I'm just not in the right headspace.

I've been backreading my dwircle and want to say: I LOVE YOU GUYS. You're so delightful and thoughtful and also fun and funny and perfect.

There's a lot of politics on my dwircle which is great, but also things I don't have the emotional energy to comment on, so if you're someone posting about that stuff, THANK YOU and I appreciate what you're saying and linking but I probably won't comment.

Life update: We've moved to Milwaukee. We're in a tiny (but cute) apartment with really great light and the ability to walk to literally everything we could need. The vet would be a bit of a hike, but we could get there on foot if we needed to. We're looking for houses nearby, because I expect to get promoted this year and get a huge bonus and raise that will pretty much wipe out our debt and allow us to put together a downpayment in record time.

Cat update: Jeeves went to the vet yesterday. We need to do a blood sugar curve on him this weekend, but we think that 3 units of insulin twice a day is the new normal. He stopped peeing on us on purpose, but he's still peeing on things, so... probably going to keep the cats out of the bedroom, which is both frustratingly hard and sad-making.

Writing update: I made my goal of 250,000 words in May, and it's a good thing because July came and work just knocked me off my feet (and is still doing so, and probably won't end until next year). I'll probably make 400,000 for the year even so, which is great, but I'm not able to write consistently in the mornings, which is frustrating. I also hit 1 million posted words a little while ago, and that was very satisfying. I've also managed to keep up a serial for the better part of the year (it's stuck on the porn) and that ends somewhere around Christmas, so I'm looking forward to diving into other projects next year.

I think that's all that's fit to print. I've not been doing much social media-wise (not even spending time on Twitter or tumblr - it's just been lack of time everywhere), so I'm not ignoring Dreamwidth, I'm ignoring everybody. I'm just now dipping a toe back in, so we'll see how that goes. Hi hi hi!

What the actual fuck.

My cat (my favorite, don't tell the rest) just came into our bedroom and pissed all over our comforter and sheets.

A) I came home not 5 minutes before this. (After a super-shitty week at work culminating in a particularly super-shitty day today.)
B) This is actually the second time he's done it, the last time, he did it while my wife and I were in the bed. He pissed ON US. We weren't really sure what to make of that; he'd been sick and we'd been playing with his insulin to get him back on track with his blood sugars.

I can't tell if he's still sick and letting us know, or if he's pissed at me specifically. I've been stressed from work, so not particularly lovey or anything, but not like, awful? I'm still petting the cats and they sleep with us, and hang out with me on the couch.

You know, I just didn't need this today.

What is this madness?

I'm at the dentist (in the waiting room, my wife is in the chair) and there is daytime TV on the TV in here. It's clearly a soap opera, but the girl sitting on the bench musing on her life is singing. A cute little hipstery alternative tune. And there was someone playing piano earlier, and I think this dude is supposed to be some kind of singer-songwriter or something. WHAT IT HEAVEN'S NAME IS THIS THING. D:

Oh man, this reminds me of my old LJ days...

When I used to do all these quizzes and things and man, I just DELIGHT in this kind of shit. I could totally post these every day.

So anyway, here's the link to a Self-Knowledge Questionnaire that tells you three traits that are important strands in your personality.

I usually only post stuff like this when it is either eerily accurate or hilariously inaccurate. I thought this was going to be the latter, but in fact, it was the former.

My three reigning traits are Rationality, Reverence, and Playfulness. :D )

Change a Life: Aya, Khouloud, Reem and Khawla

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 4.8 million people have fled Syria since the civil war began in 2011. Over 6 million others are internally displaced within Syria in numerous official and unofficial camps. Many of these families live in unsanitary, unsafe, inhumane conditions; where they survive on meager rations and have access to almost no health care. Thank you, everyone.

Thank you so much for your kind words and hugs, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate every single one.

I'm still having a rough time, and the shooting in Orlando has hit me particularly hard, making me crawl into my shell and lock up tight. I have no cope left, so I can't respond to requests asking if I'm okay, I simply don't have it in me to talk about it (and still people seem to want to talk to me about it, even after I say "I can't talk about it" - like what they're going to say is SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than the fact that I need to NOT TALK ABOUT THIS RIGHT NOW).

So as you can imagine, rough times. I'm at client #2 today, but I've got a full docket at client #1, too, so I expect it to be an extremely busy and stressful day, and honestly I am holding on by my fingernails right now.

I hope y'all are doing well, my love for you knows no bounds, and again, thank you. <3333

I Am A: Neutral Good Human Wizard/Rogue (3rd/3rd Level)

Ability Scores:

Neutral Good A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment when it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable.
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.
Primary Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.
Secondary Class:
Rogues have little in common with each other. While some - maybe even the majority - are stealthy thieves, many serve as scouts, spies, investigators, diplomats, and simple thugs. Rogues are versatile, adaptable, and skilled at getting what others don't want them to get. While not equal to a fighter in combat, a rogue knows how to hit where it hurts, and a sneak attack can dish out a lot of damage. Rogues also seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to avoiding danger. Experienced rogues develop nearly magical powers and skills as they master the arts of stealth, evasion, and sneak attacks. In addition, while not capable of casting spells on their own, a rogue can sometimes 'fake it' well enough to cast spells from scrolls, activate wands, and use just about any other magic item.

ETA: Pretty sure the rogue part should've been a bard, but that wasn't an option (sad). I'm a jack of all trades and a musician, and bard is pretty much me.

Meme from 2011

Going back through my stuff for a thing, and saw this:

Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous.

And it was cool to look at the list of 20-something stories and realize only one or two are still on it! I've posted most of them and thrown a couple away.

So here's my 2016 list:

Cut for length. )

Aaaaaaaand just so I don't show up and put up nothing than a meme, a heartwarming story:

Last Sunday my wife said "Let's go to Melting Pot!" She had a craving. Okay, so we went. Because fondue! And when we got there, the waiter asked us if there was a special occasion and we were like, "nope, just wanted to come out."

And he proceeded to be the worst waiter in the history of waiters.

But then, something came up about the Oscars. Which I totally missed this year (which is the first year in like, two DECADES that I missed them). And then we realized... our first date was the Oscars. We used to use the Oscars as our anniversary. And then I realized our first date was in 2006. We were out for 10 year anniversary. ON ACCIDENT. Heh. :D :D :D

Dear WAGFAPE podficcer:

I had not believed such a thing as WAGFAPE existed in the world, and I am so glad I chanced upon it in my galavanting around the internets.

First off, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING SOMETHING FOR ME OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. I AM SO EXCITE. I am sure I will love WHATEVER you make, and I have no opinions about things in or out of podfics (intros, music, sound effects, or straight up, nothing but words), so GO WILD. Do whatever your heart desires!

Second, I am super easy to please. For one, my number one favorite thing is your happiness. I want you to enjoy reading this story, and enjoy it enough that listening to it again and again while you edit is not (too much) of a chore. So I'd best prefer if you found a story you adored to record so that you get just as much enjoyment out of this as I do. I'd also love for you to read me one of your favorite stories - I feel like that really comes out in a reading, and it's one of my very favorite things in podfic.

Third, I love EVERYTHING. Seriously, just... I love all kinds of stories, all kinds of kinks, tropes, ratings, pairings (or not pairings)... I just love everything. I have a standard list of many many things I love, and another one that changes season to season, but the thing I'm looking for is a story that touches me in some way. Makes me laugh out loud. Makes you laugh out loud! (Some of my most favoritest stories to record were the ones were you can hear the laughter (or tears, gah, so many tears) lurking in my voice. I love those stories.) I'm not afraid of tears, so dark!fic is welcome, but I love laughter and love and cuddles too, if dark isn't your cuppa. I love to see loyalty and steadfastness, mistakes being made and then efforts to fix them (redemption fics are a huge fave), teaching of any sort (teaching in porn is a favorite), found family/team/brothers in arms, all those things are huge buttons of mine.

I like sexy fics, but if you are uncomfortable reading that, I'm happy to receive things that are lower on the ratings scale and/or gen. I prefer queer pairings, so for this fest, if you're going to do sexy times, I'd really rather see F/F (or multi-F/F/F), genderfluid characters, trans! or ace! characters, pretty much anything other than cis het. I love love LOVE platonic het relationships though (god, Olivia & Charlie (red or blue) FOREVER, or Red!Olivia & Red!Lincoln, or Dean & Charlie, I could eat them up with a spoon - as long as it stays completely platonic).

I'll put the few DO NOT WANTS up front here before I go into a bit of detail with my canons. There's only a few, and they are: character bashing, scat, mpreg. I am not super fond of A/B/O, though I must admit a female-centric A/B/O story where the political structure and history and just everything are dealt with does sound interesting. I'm okay with the rest of the normal biggies, though, so if you can do sad or scary or disturbing, I am happy to receive that!

This is a tough fandom for women and genderqueer characters, I will grant you. The women that are there are AMAZING, though, so let my name a few of my favorite characters and pairings. Charlie - ALLLLLLL THE CHARLIE, Dean & Charlie, Sam & Charlie, Dean & Sam & Charlie, Donna, Jody, Donna/Jody, WAYWARD DAUGHTERS, Claire, Claire & Castiel, Abbadon, Linda Tran, Jo, Jo & Ellen, Ellen/anyone, especially crossovers! (I've written Ellen/Aisha (The Losers), and I just stumbled across an Ellen/Buffy the Vampire Slayer. OOOOOOOOOH.) I've heard about Charlie/Jo and I love the concept but haven't read any - I'd be happy to get some of that!

I read a fic a while back that had genderfluid!Sam and I absolutely adored it (I think the pairing was Sam/Cas). I love Sam as genderfluid, or Cas as agender (which is canon, really, despite Castiel's current male (albeit lovely!) meatsuit), and I think there's a fair amount of fic about non-cis versions of Sam or Cas that would make for some lovely reading. I do any and all pairings in SPN, so no worries about stepping on toes there.

PARKER. I love all the Parker. Here is, I grant you, one het couple I could take - Parker/Hardison. I love them together and would make an exception for fic about them. I love Eliot and Parker/Hardison/Eliot too, but unless Eliot is genderfluid or agender or something, I'm not really thinking that's for this particular challenge. I love casefic featuring Parker's skillset or introspective vignettes where she looks on her team with love, or pretty much anything about Parker, ever. I do like Sophie, too, but usually more as half of a F/F pairing - Sophie/Tara or Sophie/Maggie are both favorites of mine. I really prefer Parker with Hardison, so unless it's pre-series (or pre-Parker and Hardison getting together), I'd rather not have Sophie/Parker. Genderqueer Parker would be super-mega-awesome!

The Librarians

Cassandraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Seriously, every woman she's ever met (INCLUDING EVE, IN THE FAIRYTALE EPISODE) has fallen deeply in love with Cassandra, mostly at first sight. I love Cassandra, and every F/F pairing with her that exists. Cassandra/Lamia (particularly in that alternate universe) is a fave, as is Cassandra/every female minor character she's been on screen with. Gen fics about Cassandra and magic or becoming part of a team or her brain grape also welcome. I wouldn't turn down OT3 (Cassandra/Ezekiel/Jake) if one of the boys was genderqueer in some way, too. But focus on Cassandra would be preferred. That said, now that I've thought about genderqueer Ezekiel, I would totally go for a story about that, too, that would be brilliant.

SO MANY AWESOME WOMEN. Olivia, Bolivia, Astrid (every Astrid, I love EVERY Astrid), Elizabeth (I love every iteration of her too), Nina (love every iteration of her too), Etta, and I'd be into genderqueer versions of Walter, Astrid, Lincoln, Olivia, or Broyles. Fringe is a fandom where I have read almost nothing, so I trust your judgement if this is the fandom of your heart! I'm not terribly into pairings, but I like the canon ones well enough, and mostly the aspect I like about all these folks is the team/family aspect.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

Oh, Phryne is wonderful, to be sure, but my heart is with Mac. I love Mac SO MUCH, and would love it if there were a story out there about the fling Mac and Phryne had pre-series. They just seem like they might have had a good time one night (or one week). I love Dot, too, and this fandom really hits my teaching kink pretty hard, so I'd be okay with just about anything as long as it features one or more of these delightful women (OR JANE! I LOVE JANE!). I'd love to see genderqueerness with regard to Mac, or even Jane, maybe, but I'm not particularly interested in any of the men in this fandom, even if they were genderqueer. I like Phryne/Jack and Dot/Hugh as pairings in canon, but I'd rather not have fic focused solely on that.

Today can just fuck the hell off.

1. Boston is snowing. I already came in early (Sunday night) and stayed late (today) and if I can't get home for at least a two day weekend I am going to murder things.
2. My cabbie completely missed my fucking street, and instead of driving around the block to deliver me (IN THE SNOW) to my destination, he pulled over and let me out half a block down the street.
3. There was disgusting slush all the way down the street.
4. My shoes, socks, and the bottom 6 inches of my pants were SOAKED.
5. I decided to change into a different pair of pants and socks because why not? I have my suitcase with me.
6. Somewhere between the office where I store my luggage and the office I work in, I LOST ONE OF THE SOCKS. It's maybe 100 feet of hallway between here and there, and I have searched it and both offices thoroughly.
7. Those were my favorite socks. :(

ETA: SOCK FOUND! It was on top of someone's cubicle! Which, embarrassing, but oh well. Apparently I was in such a huff, it went flying. /o\

Warnings and tags - haven't had this discussion in a while.

A few things

1. We are rewatching Fringe. Walter makes me laugh out loud SO MUCH. Also, I love the very slow and respectful way Peter and Olivia get together. Also also, Astrid is fucking GORGEOUS and so interesting. There's so much said about her in such little space on the show.

2. I am doing another serial Supernatural fic. I'm going to post on holidays. I've outlined the holidays I want to write for, and there are a couple of nice bunches of several in a row, coming up before Valentine's day that are important, but there's a 4 day gap between Ash Wednesday and Valentine's day, and the 3 days before that are in a row (Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday). Valentine's day is important, and then there is another one right away (President's day is February 15). I'm trying to outline what to do where and having a rough time. Anyone want to spitball with me in gdocs?

3. Our cats have the stinkiest butts known to man.

4. All the reports from Jaxcon are making me smile so big. And making me think about the RPF fic I don't write on very much.

5. I have to make most of a powerpoint training deck tomorrow. I'm nervous af about it. Good thoughts?

ETA: 6. Finally posted my 2015 fanwork roundup, if that's something you might be interested in.
