The Fandom Snowflake Challenge Day 13

In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some."

I'm going to go back and do days 9-12, but in my own time. This one, though. Well.

Okay, if you've been hanging around here, you've probably noticed my downward slide into Supernatural. I don't think a lot of folks on the dwircle are massive SPN fans, but I know I have a few, and I know that at least some of you have read pretty widely. So what I'm looking for is Supernatural recs. Right now I'm not ruling anything out, so whatever you like, any ship, gen, RPS or canon, whatever you love, I want it.

My only caveat: please no character bashing, or killing of female characters to get to the boyslash. I know there is a lot of wife-hate out there, and there is nothing that will make me back out of a fic faster than hating on women.

Hi, over from snowflake, who said self-reccs were enouraged for this challenge :).

I'm mostly out of SPN now, but I was VERY into it for a long time, and my mater list is here: http://pixietales.livejournal.com/19310.html (I don't do character bashing, if I don't like, I don't write :))

My favourite SPN fic is this:

Not Time's Fool (57884 words) by FayJay
A story in 21 parts, featuring an Ancient Greek curse, an unexpected metamorphosis, adventures in pool sharking, numerous shots of tequila, a nun outfit, zombies, angels, demons, kidnappings, startling discoveries about old acquaintances, massage, a game of strip poker, girl-on-girl action, girl-on-boy action, and boy-on-boy action. Despite my expectations or inclinations, it swiftly became clear that this story was going to be Sam/Dean. And, indeed, it is. Because my muse likes to fuck with me.

It also features Girl!Dean - but don't let that put you off. It's still Dean, bless him, despite the sudden girlsuit.

So, yeah it's a fic in which Dean is turned into a girl. It's perfectly in character, it has plot and it's actually one of the few genderswap fics out there that treat the matter seriously. It's also side-splittingly funny at times. And hot. And it makes me buy the incest.

In the Dean/Castiel department, this is my fave instead:
Absolution by Wolfling and Omphalos.
Against his better judgement, Castiel offers Dean a way to save Sam. This story goes AU from directly after Sex & Violence when we started writing it. However, some aspects of canon revealed by episodes aired since have been squeezed in. :) While this fic is Dean/Castiel, Sam is very much the third main character and every bit as important to the story as Dean and Castiel.
Again, this is in character, it has great character voices and is full of plot and twists.

Last but not least, a gen fic:
When Heroes Go Down (They Go Down Fast by [livejournal.com profile] buffyaddict13
The war is at hand. it’s demon against man and we’re losing the fight. the special children are wreaking havoc across the land, side by side with demons. dean is on a desperate hunt to find and save his brother while leading a small band of survivors to a final showdown.

It's an apocalyptic fic and I'm a sucker for those. It has compelling OC and superb storytelling.

If you like any of those I have more in the same vein, but since I don't know you that well I'm not sure our fic tastes are similar, so I'm hesitant to dump all of my recs here.

I can dig into my old files for SPN fics I saved before AO3 existed, but they're probably mostly Wincest, so let me know if that is cool or no-go. If you don't mind AU Dean/Cas, two of my most favorites ever are these:

Peanut Butter-Pumpkin Wedding Cake by sparseparsley. Explicit. Dean is a waiter in a strip club to put his kid brother through school. Castiel is dragged to the club as a part of his sister Anna's bachelorette party. Dean and Cas hit it off, but Dean thinks Cas is the one marrying Anna.

Asunder by rageprufrock. Explicit. Wherein Sam and Ruby are getting married, Dean is freaking out, and Cas comes along for the ride. (NB: In this fic, both Sam and Ruby are recovering drug addicts.)

IDEFK why they're both wedding-related, but they're ones that I will re-read over and over because they push my own Dean/Cas and trope buttons like crazy.

Caveat: I mostly read Sam/Dean.

Anything by [archiveofourown.org profile] molly, honestly, but a particular favorite is:

Other Worlds Than These
Dean is lost in a barren desert landscape, his past and his identity stripped from him in the transition between worlds. Guided by a deep internal pull toward a man he only sees in his dreams, Dean crosses the desert alone, on foot, until he finds a strange boy named Sam living in the ruins of an ancient city.

Also, anything by [ff.net profile] BigPink, but especially:

Red (gen)
Something evil is killing treeplanters in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, possibly the same predator that Dean narrowly escaped years before. How Grimm will things get before the brothers figure it out?

Dazzleland (gen)
“Someone goes over Niagara in a barrel. You gonna jump in and try to save them?” – Dean Winchester, Crossroad Blues. Sam’s making plans, and they don’t include his father or hunting. They might not even include Dean. High school in two time periods.

I am heavily biased, but I think that [personal profile] moragmacpherson's SPN writing is amazing in all the right ways. In particular, her reverse big bang the Catch, while it earns its warnings in full, manages to match byzantine plotting and nail-biting adventure with such unflinching emotional integrity that reading it is, by the end, bone-deep stunning catharsis. (Disclaimer: I was the beta, and this fic has never gotten the wider audience it deserved.)

For lighter fare, check out MM's master fic list which includes numerous other SPN and SPN crossover works.

Once upon a time I was very into SPN. At the time I was somewhat known for my Dean/Alistair fics. Images of Broken Light was my AU Big Bang fic. It takes a left turn early in S4 and goes from there.

This is how we don't belong is Ellen/Pamela. Possibly the first of the pairing written. Finding Jo is more important then decade old heartbreak.

I haven't gone through it in awhile and I really need to get a Pinboard, but here are my Delicious bookmarks for Supernatural.

My old SPN recs are all here: https://delicious.com/kyuuketsukirui/supernatural+rec It's almost all early-season stuff because I haven't read SPN fic in a long time, so not much if any Castiel. Mostly gen with some wincest, I think.

Um, I might be that massive SPN fan. :)

I recommend:
- everything sporting the rec: sam/dean and rec: dean/castiel tag in my DW
- I wasn't crossposting from DW before I started the just-finished recs project, however, so there are actually more recs in my LJ prior to 1/1/2012, particularly on the rec: dean/castiel tag there [ETA: but the same goes for the rec: sam/dean tag too]
- Since you mention having a penchant for fics that have been jossed, I'll tell you I have a really intense obsession with fic written after Castiel appeared but before we knew his vessel was Jimmy Novak. There is only a handful of these fics out there, but those that exist are amazing. I wrote up a rec post of what I could find here: http://mementis.livejournal.com/7668.html
- Anything written by [livejournal.com profile] candle_beck
- Almost everything written by [archiveofourown.org profile] astolat

Also, if you're interested in writing in this fandom, and can go long, sign-ups for this year's (7th!) [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang opened just a couple of days ago. It's my favorite challenge, anywhere. It's massive and well-run and chock-full of talent.

I could honestly go on for hours on this topic, but I don't think you want me to.

I can't rec this, because I can't FIND IT, but it was long and awesome. It was posted on LJ somewhere between 2006-2008, if that helps. It's a SPN/SGA/SG-1 crossover. Dean and John Sheppard deal with Lovecraftian horrors on an Earth where the Elder Gods have opened a doorway due to *mumble mumble* SG-1, Daniel is pretty *mumble*.

The author was mainly known for SPN and SGA stuff; not really an SG-1 writer. I think it might have been one of surrealis's fics, but either she's deleted her LJ or I can't remember how to spell her name.

I'd love to find it again...

I'm fond of the Sam/Castiel story One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Fuck you Dean -- anything by Tawg, actually.

And I heartily recommend Children of the Wanderers (Rock of Ages translation), which is an AU where the Winchesters are Jewish, and it's not quite the Apocalypse they're facing. It's *fantastic*!

Poetic Justice -- the one where Sam, Dean, and Cas are cursed to speak only in poetry for a week, with a different form each day.

Duck -- Castiel finds God in a park. God is a duck. Sam and Dean don't know quite how to handle this turn of events.

Anything Worth Dying For -- It's the apocalypse, and this is the Book of Chuck.

March-Stalkers Mighty -- an AU where Sam and Dean live in small village beset by monster, and Dean once was friends with a silent boy with black wings.
