kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)

Recs recs recs!

A rec set, because I promised to do this forever, and I just… I need something to keep my mind off how stressed work is making me, even with nothing to do (yeah, I've done ALL the work and I'm STILL stressed).

+++I recced [personal profile] storm_petrel's by daybreak we'll be gone on [community profile] fancake the other day, but I just want to rec it again because it is such a wonderful story, and there is this part in it where Jensen gets an anonymous love note that makes my heart clench:

The next morning, Clay’s at the table in the safehouse kitchen, doing paperwork. There’s a cup of coffee that he sure as hell didn’t make standing next to Jensen’s laptop. It’s still warm.

There’s a shuffling sound in the hall, and Clay watches Jensen stagger into the kitchen, tape wrapped around the electrical burns on his fingertips. He sees the coffee next to his laptop and blinks. “Whose coffee?” he asks, still half-asleep, and glances at Clay. Clay shrugs. “My coffee?” Jensen says, and the perplexed expression on his face makes Clay hide a grin behind his hand and redirect his attention towards the mission report paperwork.

Jensen accepts the gift with sleepy, blinking equanimity—“My coffee.”—and vanishes towards the back bedroom, laptop and cup in tow.

It's werewolf fic, it's Clay POV and there's a wonderful undertow of sort-of Clay/Roque that is just informs the whole thing, and the way Clay gets his pack is just a huge gut punch, especially that last member (so yeah, Cougar/Jensen, and it is seriously the best Cougar/Jensen I've ever read).

The action is glorious and the language is beautiful and just… I love this story. I think you will too, even if you don't know the source material.

+++Clap for the Killers, a fantastic Losers fanmix by the wonderful [personal profile] katemonkey. I downloaded this ages ago but music is one of those things I have a hard time working into my day; I just don't listen to it much, and not concertedly. This is awesome, though, I'm loving the whole album, and put together as it is, it makes a really nice mix.
1. Clay: Aisha - Death in Vegas
We've only just met / And I think you ought to know / I'm a murderer
2. Roque: I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts - X
Both sides are right, but both sides murder / I give up, why can't they?
3. Aisha: Wrong Girl - Jane's Addiction
It don't hurt a girl / She loves her dangerous play
4. Clay/Roque: From A Whisper To A Scream - Allen Toussaint
So inconsiderate of how much you cared / For some stupid reason, I just thought you had to be there
5. Pooch/Jolene: Go Baby - Lupe Fiasco (featuring GemStones)
Now we go back like a set of Atari / From baby fat to skeletons darlin'
6. Cougar: Fortunate Son (instrumental) - Lyle Workman & The Forest Rangers
Some folks inherit star spangled eyes / Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
7. Jensen: Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above - Cansei de Ser Sexy
Come and erase me and take me with you / Kiss me I'm drunk and don't worry it's true
8. Clay/Aisha: BBB - How to Destroy Angels
Times up / Close your eyes / Listen to the sound of my big black boots
9. Max: Running The World - Jarvis Cocker
It's the ideal way to order the world / "Fuck the morals, does it make any money?"
10. Jensen/Clay: Jerk Me - New Young Pony Club
No romantic pedigree / Suck me in and spit me out
11. Jensen/Cougar: Nasty Sex - La Revolución De Emiliano Zapata
Oh, my baby forgot / that the rocks can also / sing a song of love
12. Max (again): I'm Afraid of Americans - David Bowie (featuring Trent Reznor)
Nobody needs anyone / They don't even just pretend
13. The Team/The Team: The Cocksucker Club - Pansy Division
He's thought about it for a long long time / About being attracted to his own kind
14. New Jerusalem: Death Is Not The End - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (And guests)
When you're standing on the crossroads / That you cannot comprehend / Just remember that death is not the end

+++Experience (and the audiobook), by [personal profile] resonant, read by [personal profile] mific. The story is teenaged (yes, underaged) John and Rodney, Rodney POV where he decides he must divest himself of his virginity before he leaves for college. It's hilariously funny in its own right, but then [personal profile] mific adds these spot on impressions of teenaged John and Rodney that make me laugh even harder. (22:17)

+++Tongues of Men and Angels (and the audiobook) by [personal profile] mad_maudlin, read by [personal profile] constance_b. I hadn't read [personal profile] mad_maudlin before I listened to podfic of her stories, and this one got me through six hours of the long drive from Baltimore to Wisconsin. It's a fantastic story, so well written, and then the reading is excellent, nice and fast, which is a requirement for me – too slow and I'll lose concentration and miss chunks of the story. Also, a nice reading, not too singsong (another requirement for me – there are a couple of readers I simply cannot listen to), just kind of straightforward with a strong sense of rhythm and pacing. Also, lovely accent. I've never met an accent I don't like, honestly, but some of them are quite sweet to my ear, and this one definitely is. (5:56:17)

+++Fair Trade by [livejournal.com profile] esteefee (and the full anthology of the series), read by [livejournal.com profile] wihluta. This is a lovely story (and the series is good too), with John and Rodney falling in love two ways, and Ronon and Teyla as doctors (I love that part). It's just one of those amazing AUs that makes it so clear to see John and Rodney in a completely foreign setting. I like all [livejournal.com profile] esteefee's OCs, too. The reader is strong and smooth – there aren't a lot of obvious stops and starts in the reading, which is a treat. I know it's easy to get tongue-tied and do a lot of little fixes, but I find most readers are at their best when they can get on a roll and keep going, which [livejournal.com profile] wihluta does beautifully. (1:52:29)

+++from the edge of the green sea by [personal profile] auburn, read by [personal profile] general_jinjur. [personal profile] general_jinjur is one of my favorite readers; she has a larger pitch range than most readers; she uses it in her dialogue especially, and she has a delightful way of reading dialogue and narrative differently that is brilliant. The story is brilliant, too, how beautifully [personal profile] auburn writes the OCs and does the worldbuilding she's famous for. Gorgeous. (29:10)

+++Benched (and the audiobook by [personal profile] cesperanza, read by [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope. This combination of author/reader is absolutely one of my favorites. I love both of them a ridiculous amount; the story is brilliant, and the reading somehow makes it even better. I have no idea how they do that. The story is an action-y Rodney!whump that John pretty much sits out of; that's the brilliant part about it. (1:10:43)

+++Safe Distance, written and read by [personal profile] shaenie. I love [personal profile] shaenie for a zillion reasons, one of which is how much I love her fic, but another is for how she reads in overdrive; she just gives the story a push and reads it like she's riding a bike downhill. I love it. Adore it. I cannot tell you how much joy her readings give me. (14:34)

+++Waiting for My Real Life to Begin (and the audiobook) by [personal profile] toomuchplor, read by the author. This story is… well, it starts Rodney/Jennifer and turns into Rodney/John. For someone like me, a John/Rodney fangirl who likes Keller, it was perfect. For someone who is more of a Jennifer fan than I am… I am not certain it would be your cup of tea. I enjoyed the story immensely, but I wanted to give that caveat as I know there are people on my flist that would want to know. [personal profile] toomuchplor is a delightful reader; quick and sparkly. She's speedy, which is a big hit for me. She's also got a nice range which is another thing I love a lot. I can hear the humor in her voice when things are funny, and the pathos in her voice when things are emotional and… I just really enjoy her reading. (2:38:19)

+++Attack of the Giant Robot from Outer Space (and the audiobook) by [personal profile] skoosiepants, read by [personal profile] anatsuno. All the folks on this list are favorite authors and readers of mine, and I left [personal profile] anatsuno to last because I have so much stuff by her I had to go through a bunch of stories to pick one of my favorites (and yet save other faves for my [community profile] solstice_calendar recs this year too). The story is adorable robot-porn, kind of, typical [personal profile] skoosiepants cute factor 20. [personal profile] anatsuno's reading is delightful, full of warmth and humor, nicely paced and with a nice, wide vocal range. Also, I adore her accent a ridiculous amount. (14:00)

Hello! Cards on the table: I was googling myself and found this entry, and I wanted to let you know that I didn't do the podfic for Waiting for My Real Life to Begin! Much as I'd like to accept the praise. ;)
