Snowflake Challenge #11

In your own space, create a fanwork. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Fanwork means anything that you, a fan, creates. If you say it’s a fanwork, then it is! But if you want some suggestions, why not see if one of your fav fanworks creators has a transformative works statement? Many people (me included) have them on their profiles, either here on Dreamwidth or on AO3. Then go crazy! Make art, make fic, make a podfic, make a vid, make a cross-stitch pattern. Crochet, knit. Bake a cake! An interpretive dance of how it makes you feel! Anything!

I've been making a bunch of cold reads the last several days, as a response to my own challenge #8 wish and for birthdays and whatnot, but yesterday I made a podfic of silveradept's And the Cartomancy Caper for their challenge #8 wish. The Librarians/Warehouse 13 crossover, gen, podfic is 22:44.

How does a cold read differ from a podfic, for you?

So for me, a cold read is just, you start reading and you go, leave in all the mistakes and cat noises and whatever. For me personally, I also basically include commentary here or there? I let myself laugh through the funny parts and cry through the sad parts and just... go "whoops, that was the wrong POV, lemme try that again!"

It's not for everyone, but I enjoy it, and it's more like, as one commenter said, someone sitting at your table reading to you, rather than a performance.

That's pretty much what I expected! Like a friend spontaneously reading you something they found on the internet.

Yes, exactly! I have many, many more than the ones I posted on the AO3 which are literally "hey I found this cool thing, lemme read it for you" for friends.

Thanks! I love to podfic and it's easy, comparatively, so it's nice to do this for people and not stressing out about it (the way I get about writing stories for people).

I don't know why, but I really love that I'm seeing more and more podfic popping up in my online circles. I started really listening to them this summer past, and it's great to see them more!

Yayyyy! I love podfic and have for a long time, but sometimes it seems just... too much to do it.

I didn't realise until now that you're kisahawklin! I read so many of your SGA stories when I was originally in the fandom. Basement Cat has infiltrated heaven was one of my story recs this year in Challenge #6, I adore that story!

I did enjoy the podfic. I've not listened to many in the past because I tend to be using the computer at the same time as watching sport on tv in the background, but I want to explore more of them. I should listen to podfic when I'm baking or knitting instead!

That's a perfect time for podfic! I am not a crafter, so I do it while I cook or clean my kitchen, or when I'm driving places/running errands.

I'm also super picky about podfics (I can't stand slow readers or things that are overly ~performed) so my suggestion is, if you find someone you like, follow them and shower them with praise. (I recommend jellyfishfire wholeheartedly.)

Teachers and people reading stories out old at school always annoyed me if they were too slow. Maybe it's because I'm a fast reader myself.

Yup, exactly! If they are not reading fast enough to take up my entire attention span (with the exception of having cleaning/crafting/driving to do, which is basically muscle memory at this point) then my mind wanders and all of a sudden I've missed what they've said because they can't keep me with them. I'm sure there are people who appreciate that, but it's not me.

A fix for this can be listening at 1.5x or 2x speed; I've started to watch webinars that way because I can get through the content twice as fast without any loss of information.
