30 Days of Fandom, catch-up, days 26-28
Here's the full 30 days, for those who want to play along.
What is the oddest (or funniest) thing you've had to research for a fic?
One of the things about Impromptu, because I've been writing it so long, is that every year I'd have to go and change a few things that were... timely. There was a baseball game the boys were watching on TV. There was the classical Grammys, the Oscars, and dates of various and sundry musical things. Looking up the Grammys, especially the classical ones, is harder than you might think.
I think it was
auburn who I used to talk about posting the search history along with the fic, because it's so crazy! And I almost always research for the tiniest things - I did an hour's worth of research for a THREE WORD PHRASE in a 36,000 word fic that I am absolutely certain no one noticed but me.
Speaking of that 36,000 word fic (The Three Body Problem), I researched ice cream/gelato/custard/froyo places in Milwaukee for that one (though I knew one of them (Kopp's) beforehand). I also researched cooking classes in community colleges within 2 hours of Lebanon, KS. I love researching stupid stuff like that. For Impromptu, I spent a while researching Philadelphia real estate. This is the sort of thing I research all the time.
One of the more in-depth things I researched (and used in my fic more than three words) was gun-making for my steampunk Losers fic, the antechamber of another world. I love that fic, and I think I did decent research on it, though I didn't have a gun beta for it until after I posted, and I was so nervous, I never asked her.
Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?
I write in bed, mostly. When my schedule is going good, I write first thing in the morning, so I literally wake up, open my computer, and start writing. When it's going less good (like right now), I usually write in bed at the end of the night.
Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?
I have tried and failed a number of times. My wife and I do it in a strange sort of way, on occasion. I write until I get stuck and then I whine to her and ask her to write me out of my tough spot. She's done this on three different fics so far, so we're planning to try nano together to write some origfic. I hope it works out; I'm enamored of our idea and I think it could be pretty grate.
