The Fandom Snowflake Challenge Day 5
Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or consume different fanworks. Give that new fandom a go. Listen to a podfic or watch some vids if you haven’t before.
Um. I'm going to count the last six hours that I've been a) rabidly watching SPN (more than halfway through S5 now) and b) editing Fanlore as doing something new.
My girlfriend is either going to kill me or die of embarrassment (because I love Castiel, OMG how could I not, it's like he was made for me, if only Misha would grow his hair long!). I'll let you know which happens first.

I loved Misha's hair in season 4. I think if you do a google image search of him there are pics of him with longer hair, not sure what it's from, maybe from when he was on 24?

Oh, Misha with long hair. I don't know, though, generally, I think Misha looks kinda weird? I didn't think he was handsome at all until I saw him as Castiel in action. I think it's partially the voice (ugh, that voice, what am I going to do) and partially the straight man act necessary to play Castiel. I wasn't interested in him at all as Jimmy (though I enjoyed that ep a great deal, and had been waiting for it). So all of that's a long way of saying I will probably end up a huge fan of Misha (because he's a goofball and loves the show and its fans) but I'll never find him particularly attractive? Unless I go looking for him in long hair. Which I'm probably going to do. My gf is going to kill me. /o\
ETA: Of course I went looking, and the first page was all Cas and short hair, and I was all "whew!" and then. There was the one with long hair. And I was like, "Oh, that's just a picture of Jared that got tagged with Misha, it's probably a set or something, happens all the ... wtaf. That's Misha. With long hair. What." *sudden brain implosion*

One of the things I love best about this show is that first, all the actors are really good friends and hang out even when they're not doing the show. Jarod and Jensen are best friends and were in each other's wedding party, the actors who play the young John Winchester, Chuck and Loki/Gabriel are all good friends with each other and they're friends with Misha and Misha is good friends with Jarad and Jensen, and, well, most of the recurring stars are friends with each other. The RPF really does write itself and the actors are all too happy to egg it on, as evidenced by some of their twitter accounts, lol. Which is the second thing I love, all the actors are completely aware of all the shipping and no one speaks out against any of it. In fact, Richard Speight, Jr (Loki/Gabriel) has often said he thinks it's awesome Gabriel gets shipped with Sam. And I'm pretty sure Misha ships Dean/Cas.
I agree with you about Misha's attractiveness. He would never have pushed my buttons without playing this serious character that exudes power. Speaking of which, one of my favorite looks he shares with Dean is in the beautiful room when he shoves Dean against the wall and just stares at him to shut him up while he cuts his arm to do the symbol thing. Guh! That scene caused my brain to write about a thousand D/s fics. Cas is just so in control and Dean looks so subservient. *melts* Actually, you know, there are SO MANY scenes that make me melt.
I had mixed reactions to the convention episode. I don't think the actors, writers or producers were looking to mock the fandom. They love the fandom and, generally, the fandom loves them. It's a completely different vibe from SGA where there was always anger from both sides. The only person I've ever heard of the fandom hating is Sera Gamble -- she's the Marti Noxon of Supernatural. Anyway, I think TPTB thought the fandom would think it was funny, it just got away from them. Same thing with Becky, the Dean/Sam shipper/super fan.
I looked it up and those long hair pics are definitely of Misha when he played a character on 24. He's even shirtless in some of them, :D

Naw, I love that they're all buddies. That's awesome! And I can totally see where the Jared/Jensen and Misha/anybody stuff comes from, even from the fringes of fandom where I've been. I haven't been reading yet, so I don't have a feel for whether I will read RPS or not. I'm not one to keep tabs on that stuff (I suck at twitter), so I'm usually just not on top of it enough to be able to enjoy it. But hey, that's what AUs are for, hm?
I'm not sure I will start reading, tbh, we'll just have to see where it goes. I think I might write something before I start reading, just to see if I can avoid fandom zeitgeist a bit.
See, yeah, I gotta admit, I felt like they were trying to give fanservice with the convention bit and just... missed the mark. I don't normally feel like they're hostile, but it's hard to tell, really, and yeah, I've been burned by SGA.

When Eric Kripke created the show, he had the first five seasons all planned out, so when it got to the end of season 5 and they got renewed, he left to do other things and Sera Gamble takes over as show runner, hence the Marti Noxon comparison fits in more ways than one. She was not very popular with a lot of the fans, although some people liked her. She stayed as showrunner for seasons 6 and 7 and now it's passed on to one of the other writer's, whose episodes I loved, but whose name escapes me at the moment.
Writing before reading might be a good idea. The only thing you really have to keep in mind is that Castiel is shortened to "Cas" not "Cass." Oh, speaking of writing, remember back when you did that meme and I gave you genderswap and SPN and you talked about them being raised by their mom instead of their dad? Obviously, you hadn't hit the episode with their parents' backstory so I couldn't tell you their mom was trained as a hunter already. I'd still be interested in what you'd make of it.
I know exactly what you mean about not watching 24 for anything, I watched one of the episodes, but never felt compelled to watch any others.

Oh, huh, I love the idea that Kripke had a set plotline. It just figures that they'd want to keep going, even after the end of the storyline. I have a bad feeling that my happy times may be tested in the later seasons. D:
Hm, well, that actually makes it non-genderswap, ha, it just would be a flip of John getting killed in the nursery. I don't see Mary as going quite as... obsessive... as John, though, so I can't imagine them being driven or trained the way they were. But I don't know, honestly. I hesitate to say it, but I wouldn't really be terribly interested in writing that fic (that particular kind of 'what if' scenario is something I'm terrible at) but I would be extremely interested in reading. I love the idea - but figuring it out? That's my least favorite thing to write. :(

It's okay, I'm pretty sure that fic has already been written somewhere. Actually, once you're ready to read stuff, I'll look up a story I found that I think is actually a crossover with Stargate, but the only Stargate thing was the multidimensional mirror. Dean goes through all these different realities and meets all these different versions of himself, Sam, Cas and others and some are genderswaps. It was a good story, I'm gonna have to look it up again!

I was about to suggest you should also read "The Soul Piece" by her, even though it's a WIP. It was the first really long Dean/Castiel story I read and it kinda informed my whole perception of the ship.

It was Castiel that got my into SPN. I was bored one night and a friend linked me to a vid that was pretty much all of the Cas scenes that had happened about 5 eps into season 4. I kinda fell pretty hard and pretty fast after that.
