30 Day Fandom Meme - catch up again
Here's the full 30 days, for those who want to play along.
Day 11: Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
I guess I am a shipper (this is on my mind due to a post about gen fic I recently saw on my dwircle) so that makes most of my stories have a romance component. The fandoms I like tend to be sci fi or supernatural or fantasy based, so take that for what you will. The original stories I want to tell often tend toward those categories as well, so I guess that's just what sticks in my filter.
Day 12: Have you ever attempted an 'adaptation' fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

romcomorama which was awesome (and I did have an idea for doing The Family Stone as SGA), and it had a lot of enthusiasm at sign-ups but little follow through. I have modding lessons I have learned from that, and it's one of those things, you know, I only have so much enthusiasm to go around, and sometimes enthusiasm is hard to come by when work or other RL issues get in the way. Other than that, I have not tried to adapt a movie or book, though it is often one of the first things that crossed my mind when I read/saw something back in SGA. That doesn't happen for me with Supernatural because of the answer to the next question. :)
Day 13: Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
In SGA I equally loved the canon and AUs. In Supernatural, I enjoy an AU story here or there, but very rarely (and I can't seem to really get into the RPF where AUs are king and rightfully so). I just really love the Supernatural world, and I feel like it's almost a character (much like the Impala). Their lives are so over-the-top that a) their traits are ridiculous in the real world; glossing over things like Dean's alcoholism is simply not possible. They don't have the apocalypse to say "eh, what's a little alcoholism when you've got to save the world?" and b) they're so fucked up that the kinds of things that would cause that in the real world put me off. It's one thing to write characters with canon as it is; it's another to basically create a backstory with the kind of trauma necessary to get the character traits that would make Sam and Dean recognizable, and I just can't manage that. It feels too cruel. So anyway, that generally means Supernatural canon and canon forks for me.
I have to add here that I actually hate fanon for the most part and will purposely go against it when I can. Weird little things like Lorne's first name being Nick (before canon had given him a name) and big things like a standard characterization or history point that fanon adopts (I can't think of one offhand; Dean's characterization in Destiel comes to mind, but it's hard to pinpoint what I don't like about it. Mostly I find Dean to be too sensitive, too self-aware, and his faults ignored or dialed down so they look like cute annoyances and not problematic issues). So yeah, I tend to go with canon characterizations against fanon where I can.
Writing fanfic has definitely shown me that there is always an alternate explanation, and there is always a way to fix a plot hole. I don't take anything in canon as absolute anymore, and I can pretty much come up with a canon-plausible explanation of just about anything you want to write, up to and including crack.
