If I remember correctly, the writers wanted to give him short hair, but it was SyFy that objected.

Really! I had not heard that! I still don't like the writers, but this makes me hate them a little less. :)

Yeah, the writers were totally douchey, but I think I remember reading from Mallozzi's blog that Ronon was supposed to lose his hair in the episode where his friends were in the Wraith ship? But that Syfy changed their mind at the last minute. Momoa, of course, had already cut his hair, and so he had to wear a stunt double's wig for a while until they fitted him with a new one.

JFC, how even do I still remember that?
