At least, judging by the posts of the last few days.

[community profile] choralmusic, found at the Community Rec-O-Matic in the DW news post (and I think [personal profile] rydra_wong's Community Rec-O-Matic is still going too).

Apologies

10/26/11 12:06 pm
kate: I <3 DW (DW: I hart DW)
So, I was going to make a post about how to apologize well (as people seem to think I do this well - and I do it a lot, I will admit), and I probably will at some point (I have notes! and an outline!), but until then, this apology post about DW's recent downtime by [staff profile] mark is super classy. This is a perfect apology, and one of the reasons I'm so glad I'm here. I love Dreamwidth. ♥
kate: Radek and Ronon have hugggggs (SGA: zelenka/ronon hug)
So, y'all know there is a Anonymous Love Meme going on over on [personal profile] meloukhia's journal, right?

You can nominate yourself or someone else, and I'll be nomming a few more, but for people I know and love that are already on there: synecdochic, marina, v_angelique, rydra_wong roga, thingswithwings, yvi, deepad, eruthros, amemthystfirefly, sabinetzin, katemonkey, kanata, medie, telesilla, toft, helens78, darkrose, thefourthvine, astolat, general_jinjur, elynross, amadi, bossy_marmalade, busaikko, jumpuphigh, afuna, damned_colonial, princessofgeeks, and gblvr. And those are just the ones I recognized offhand - go leave everyone some love!

Dreamwidth starter kit )

If anybody else has good starter info or links to other newbie posts, feel free to add stuff in the comments!

I just realized that I have 25 invites for GoogleWave. (I haven't had a computer that could run it until recently, and then I forgot about it - kinda like everyone else, I think.)

Want one? It's yours. Just comment or email me. My email is kisahawklin at gmail. I'll need your email address and comments aren't screened, so if that's sensitive info, you might want to email it.

Also - I have some Dreamwidth invites. There is a long post coming about how AWESOME Dreamwidth is. You know why? Because when the jerks like the ones that prompted the strikeout and the boldout at LJ came knocking at Dreamwidth - they were turned back. And when they went after the payment source (PayPal), Dreamwidth said - 'well, screw you, PayPal. They're not doing anything illegal and they're not doing anything against the TOS, so we'll find someone else to take our business.' (And offered a free month of service to paid account users because they'll have to find alternate means of payment (sending a check or money order) to insure uninterrupted service.)

And THAT is what makes a journaling service to me.

Okay, so maybe THIS is that post. And it's not so long. But I love Dreamwidth, and I love the community here, and I spend a lot of time over here. I'm still watching and posting at some communities on LJ, because I can't help it ([livejournal.com profile] mckay_sheppard certainly isn't going anywhere), but I'm going to be commenting with my Dreamwidth openID, and it won't be long before I'm doing all my commenting on LJ with my Dreamwidth openID because LJ is not the service DW is, and I want to spend my money and time with people and a service I can respect in the morning. I still love you, if you want to stay on LJ, but since I can't LJ from work, it's tough for me to comment or respond to comments. I will try to be better about that, but I have to do it from home (I can DW from work, another bonus), and I'm not always spectacularly motivated. DW is working on making the LJ flist even more accessible from DW, so hopefully there'll be more options for me soon (and this just goes to prove that people who think DW is anti-LJ are really not thinking too clearly - they are doing everything they can to let people on DW stay in touch with their LJ friends with the minimum of fuss).

Okay, so now it's long. I've needed to do that for a while. I don't want to offend hard core LJ-ers, not at all. I just want to talk about how much I love DW, and the people behind it, and how they handle things, and I want everyone to see how shiny it is.

*thoughtful*

I've been meaning to start commenting on LJ with OpenID. I mean, if the point is to open up the discussion at DW, using my LJ isn't going to make people want to move. Showing people a) how easy it is and b) that I'm really committed to Dreamwidth is probably a better way to get my point across.

I haven't moved comments to DW completely, but I'm close; except for fic, more than 80% of my comments are on DW.

From LJ feedback:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns. We understand that gender is not binary, and intend to respect that understanding for our users.

At this time, the code you reference is not live on the site, and will not become so in the future. We know that you, and many other users, have serious concerns about any requirement to specify gender, so we'd like to take a moment to explain events and our position further.

The intention of this code was to change the sign-up process to include a field for the selection of gender; that the code would completely disable the "Unspecified" option at the same time was deemed unacceptable. While the code in question had gone to our beta (testing) server, it had not gone to our production server, and will not do so due to this problem. Furthermore, we'd like to clarify that code posted to the changelog community is not always final, as such code must then go through the beta testing process and can often be changed before actual implementation.

Additionally, some erroneous information has been spread regarding the potential public display of the gender field. We would like to clarify that gender is not currently publicly displayed on the profile, nor anywhere else on the site, and there are no plans to change this behavior.

A note from Anjelika Petrochenko now on [personal profile] synecdochic's original post.

Does this change anything? Not for me, really. I knew LJ was made of fail, this just cements it. You can't convince me that if there hadn't been an uproar they would have pulled it because it was a bug.

I've been more and more over on Dreamwidth; besides the awesomeness of the company, they don't have ads, they believe in and promote diversity, and they try to keep things as transparent as possible so you can see what's going on. *tempts*
kate: RAGEY SKELETON IS RAGEY (death)
I had a really awesome experience at work the other day. One of the specialists asked me about someone in a department whose full name was Catherine but went by 'Lee'. She wanted to know if I knew if the person was cis- or trans-, so that she could use the correct pronouns. I have never had this happen, and I doubt anyone else in the office would have thought twice about it. I was dead chuffed. It seriously made my day.

And now LJ is forcing a gender binary. Source. Taken word for word from synecdochic. I am very angry about this, to the point of being unintelligible - thank god someone has their words left. )

I'd just like to point out that Dreamwidth? Is owned and run by people who object to this kind of bullshit. If you want a DW code I am MORE than happy to give you one. If you don't want to have to ask for one, there's always [site community profile] dw_codesharing.

ETA: An interesting post, more aligned with the anger I'm feeling, is a post by [personal profile] thingswithwings. (I appreciate [personal profile] synecdochic's calm, and I approve of treating the LJ feedback team with respect, but I am *pissed* and this hits on some of why.)
kate: John actually plays his guitar? (SGA: john - guitar)
*Reading Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers. So far, so fantastic. [personal profile] cupidsbow posted a little bit about this sometime last year - I think she saw him speak. He's coming to JHU; he'll be on campus Tuesday, Oct. 6th, 7:30pm, and it's FREE. I'm going. If you're around Baltimore and might be interested/have the time, lemme know. You can park by my house and we can walk up together. Maybe dinner before? Should be a fascinating lecture!

*Another person that I really hope I don't get for my recipient. Why do people feel the need to lecture about good writing? The good writers get it; the not-so-good writers have to learn it - your little lecture isn't going to suddenly make them write IC. Also, am I the only person in the world who can write things I don't want to read? Or wants to read things I don't write? It seems weird to me to ask for things you could write yourself (ONLY things you could write yourself, you all know what I mean here, right?). That reminds me that I want to edit my post to add kink to my 'wants' and rephrase my mpreg 'don't want.' (Yes, that's just a 'note to self' right there.)

*Tomorrow is Lee Jeans Denim Day. I paid my five bucks, and tonight I'm going out to buy jeans to wear tomorrow. (No, I don't own any jeans. It's work clothes or pajamas for me, and not a lot in between.) We're supposed to bring pink food. There's already pink lemonade, ham, watermelon, some weird beet slaw thing, and a huge variety of baked goods. Can anyone think of anything else pink? I might be reduced to buying pink M&Ms.

*Jennifer's Body was indeed delightful. I didn't have any doubt once both [personal profile] fiercelydreamed and Matthew Gray Gubler liked it, but still. It's nice to be pleasantly surprised by a movie. Except for the really loud, really irritating teenie girl sitting two rows in front of us who very loudly said spoiler )

*Fame was spoiler )

*I'm finding I prefer to post to DW only a lot of the time, as I can answer those comments from work. I'm only crossposting roughly two-thirds of my posts. Anybody move over here completely yet? I still have friends that are not likely to move (I know this, as they've made DW accounts and don't use them), but I find that when I get home from work and can answer the LJ comments, I just don't feel like doing it. Anybody else having this problem? What do you do about it?

Whoa, WHAT?!

From the [livejournal.com profile] news update.

If you have a paid or permanent account on LiveJournal, you can start earning some extra pocket money simply by doing what you love to do on LiveJournal, like writing, sharing photos, and catching up with friends! The more people who visit your journal, the more money you can earn. It's that simple. You’ll get to control where ads appear and whether you prefer text or image ads. You can even customize colors and choose different ad sizes and formats. LiveJournal is turning over 100% of net proceeds to you. (After Google takes their cut, the rest is yours.)

I have six Dreamwidth codes.

Who needs one?

Also - I sent a code to someone who has not yet used it. If you still want it, let me know now, or I'm gonna hand it off to someone else, mmmmkay?

Thanks!
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
So I have several paid DW accounts. I wanted to have a couple accounts available in case I wanted a few journals, you know, for whatever. And I have... *counts* ... besides [info]kate, I have three. One is my longtime sock, one is a sock for mocking purposes (likely to never be used) and one... isn't for RPG exactly, but I wanted it just in case.

I STILL HAVE ONE PAID ACCOUNT LEFT. And I can't think of another name I want, or another purpose for a journal.

SO. For one month of paid account time, gimme something. An icon or two, a comment fic, a really creative diatribe about the color pink, something. The best something wins a DW account with a month of paid time.

Just a note...

...to say that if you're crossposting to LJ from DW, I've probably taken you off my flist at LJ. No worries - I still love you! And I'm reading you on DW.

Feel free to remove me too, either from LJ or DW or both - it's no skin off my nose, really. I know I can get in a groove (like last month with work) that's boring as hell.

More codes!

5/3/09 11:00 am
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
I have two more codes!

A good portion of my friends seem to have gone over to at least check things out, but if you are not one of them, but you're curious, comment here. The first two comments get codes.

I finally said a few of the things that I haven't been saying about why I think Dreamwidth is awesome here. I'm moving over there permanently - I've decided now - but I'll keep crossposting to LJ and following my flist here, so no need to feel like you're being pressured to move too. Speaking of which - that's one of the reasons I like Dreamwidth. They've bent over backwards to make sure you can easily keep up with LJ if you want to.

ETA: Codes gone. Comment if you want one; should I get more, I will give them out first come first serve.
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
So someone asked over at [livejournal.com profile] dreamwidth about importing deadjournals, and I remembered that I had two! Remember, [personal profile] fantasyisland? You were [deadjournal.com profile] deadgaya and I was, predictably, [deadjournal.com profile] kisahawklin.

I was there from mid-2003. There's a lot about my life in the ER, and my very first dipping my toes into fandom (which was a surprisingly solitary experience for me). It's interesting reading, though I have a hard time believing how old I was at the time. I'm TOTALLY importing both of my deadjournals if/when that option becomes available (my second one is my writing journal, and OMG my very first writings are terribly terrible).

But now I need to write - god, I just want to finish this damn porn! And also I started (and can probably finish) some utter crack (SGA, McShep, of course) while we were at the Maryland Sheep and Wool festival.

Time to hit post and see if my fancy html footwork worked.
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
Crossposting, check! This is EASY! DUDE.

WHO WANTS A CODE? I may have a few.

ETA: And I've given out all my codes for right now. I do expect a few more, though, so feel free to comment and you'll be on the list!
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (john - maybe...)
And so I sat there, like a good little girl, with my year-long premium paid account sitting in my shopping cart, watching the seed account numbers fall and fall and fall, and it hit 'less than 50 left' and I went !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And bought a seed account.

WTF, self.
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (john - maybe...)
So I've been thinking about this whole subscribe/access thing and what it means to me. (And the fact that my mocking of [personal profile] sarah made her character jump of a bridge and kill itself the other night. Long story, only funny if you were there, ignore the in-joke).

I subscribe without granting access to people who I'm interested in reading but who are famous have wide readerships and are unlikely to subscribe to me. If they grant me access, I don't think much about it because I figure they just let everyone have access - like those authors who friend everybody who friends them.

I subscribe and grant access to everyone I know IRL (and a couple of people I haven't yet met IRL but assume I will soon).

I haven't yet granted access to people I don't subscribe to. I'm not sure I will; my locked entries are just about work. There have been more of them lately because work has been hell, but they're boring as fuck and if people subscribe to me to read stuff, I don't think they really need the nitty gritty of my work life.

I have a couple of people who have subscribed to me but haven't granted me access. I haven't done anything with them yet, because I'm just trying to figure it out. I don't think it's the famous widely read thing - because, duh, I'm not famous widely read. I think it might just be a 'I stumbled on this journal and we seem to have similar interests so I'll see what she has to say' thing. In which case, there's no reason not to let them read my locked entries. Also I would normally subscribe to people who subscribe to me, but I'm so limited with my time lately, I don't want to add people to my reading list and not be able to say anything. Is that rude?

I don't know, man. It's clear to me what I'm doing when I track down friends and famous widely-read people and either subscribe or subscribe and grant access. It's not clear to me what people expect from me when they subscribe to me but don't grant access.

It feels like it should be the same both directions, but it's not. Hrm. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

So it turns out that extreme stress is very bad for my digestive system. It's going to be a very very bad month. But I'll probably lose weight, so that's something. (I'm also exercising and giving up soda, so it's not *just* a high-stress diet.)

We saw Fast and Furious. IT WAS PRETTY.

I f*cking love Criminal Minds. Is it just me, or is Reid looking mighty unkempt these days? I want backstory. I haven't seen any decent CM fic though, so if you know of some, tell me.

I'm on Dreamwidth now. I'll be crossposting... likely forever, actually, as my flist is not terribly likely to migrate. I like Dreamwidth, I know the people in charge and trust them (especially with my money) so I'm going to move to Dreamwidth more or less permanently, and crosspost to LJ for those of you that aren't going anywhere. I know I should link links for those of you scratching your head, but god, I don't know myself except what I've heard at stitch n' bitch. Okay, wait. Here's the FAQs.

If you're on Dreamwidth already, tell me! (Especially if you changed your name like I did.) If you want a code, tell me that too. Like everyone else, I have no idea how codes are going to be distributed, but I'll make a list should I get some. <3
