I love this one, and I've been writing a lot but not talking about it, so, here:

I currently have 310 works archived at Ao3. Pick a number from 1 (the most recent) to 310 (the first thing I posted there), and I'll tell you three things I currently like about it.

I blocked the post on tumblr so I can't find it again, but it's been nagging at me since I read it (god, how I wish I hadn't). It was (I think) a professional editor bitching about book beginnings. It was a list of 13 things NOT to do at the beginning of the book, and at the end, I was like... "then how the fuck DO you start a book, exactly?!"

I just HATE shit like that, it's so negative, and of course most of us have, at one point or another, done everything on a list like that, and it's just so fucking discouraging. How about giving examples of what to do instead? I'd hate that too, but at least it wouldn't fucking feel so hopeless.

And I am really good at beginnings! I never have trouble starting a new story. I can't imagine what it would be like for writers who have trouble with that sort of thing reading that article.

Fuck writing advice, folks, that's what I say. Read/listen to it, maybe try it for yourself, but if it doesn't work? DON'T TIE YOURSELF IN KNOTS TRYING TO WRITE LIKE SOMEBODY ELSE.

God, I hate writing advice, SO MUCH.

Also, doing gishwhes. It's crazy fun. :D

Hi, dwircle, hi hi hi. :)

I have been busy busy busy at work, and not in a place to want to post about most of it (I've become more and more unwilling to talk about it here; not sure why that is, but also short of instrospective time, so I may never figure it out). That said, here's a taste of what my work life is like at the moment:

This morning, I woke up from a work stress dream because yesterday I decided to ACTUALLY do PTO instead of doing the stuff I needed to do for an email I got as I was coming back from the office (yes, on a PTO day...). That was 6:30am. So I got up, did the work that I needed to do, and in the middle of it, the PI emailed to say "Oh, yeah, we're never going to make that Thursday deadline, so let's just push it out a couple of weeks." At 7am. So that was both super-annoying (because if I had let my procrastination superpowers do their work, I could've just woken up to a nice "whew, don't have to worry about that" instead of getting up at 6:30am and doing crappy work), and also super-annoying (because I TOLD her that next week was an impossible deadline with two subawards, but she didn't believe me). But anyway, I finished my two things for her, the one thing for another PI that her email had reminded me of, revised her budget because changing the deadline changes the start date which changes the inflation, and then decided to do a travel thing because I forgot something.

What I wanted to do was cancel the flight I'd scheduled for 4/27-4/30 so I was catching an earlier flight on 4/30 (because my brother's flying in and I want to get in early). But what I ended up doing instead was cancelling my flight for next week. DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD: So I called my airline and said, "noooooooo please don't cancel" and they couldn't help me, and to rebook the flight, it cost me an addition $450. So that was fun. I went back to bed. No more doing travel things at 8am for me.

Of course, what I WANT to be doing is working out the romantic-ish part of the hugely action-adventure story I'm telling for the J2 big bang. Of course, I'm one of maybe six people not writing J2 or Wincest (I'm writing Wincestiel, though it's pretty Sam/Cas heavy at the moment).

How's things, dwircle? I realized because I haven't been feeling like posting, I haven't been reading, either, and I went back a ways to check on folks, but going back a month is probably not in the cards right this second. I'll try to catch up, though. <333

*sigh*

[community profile] intoabar is live! :D :D :D :D I love this challenge SO MUCH!!!! Everyone should play! Simple breakdown: you pick a character to walk into a bar pub establishment PLACE (yes, "bar" is very loosely interpreted), and then you pick up to 4 fandoms that you could also write, and [personal profile] sabinetzin does some dice-rolling magic, and picks the character that your character meets in the PLACE! You make some kind of fanwork, and oh MAN - the list is so big now! Look at this!

- a story of at least 500 words
- a complete piece of art of a reasonable size (manips and graphics yes, banners and icon sets no)
- a vid of at least forty-five seconds
- a podfic, the text/script of which must be written specifically for this challenge, five minutes long OR five hundred words
- a comic that is at least one page and/or six panels
- any combination of these things
- something else you get mod approval for (MACARONI CASTLE. I'M JUST SAYING.)

Oh, you guys, this is SO MUCH FUN. Don't you want to come play? I've signed up already (and done this three times before: Spencer Reid walks into a bar and meets Hardison!, Jake Jensen walks into a Harry Potter premiere and meets Duff from Ace of Cakes!, and Charlie Bradbury walks into a Voice audition and meets CeeLo Green!) and won't you come join me?

I did it last July and made my goal, but my cabin was stupid and there was no excitement, chatter, or anything else. Anybody got a cool cabin that needs another person, or want to try building a cabin of our own?

When you see this, share 3 random lines from 3 WIPs. And I'm going to take "lines" to mean "paragraphs" because that's how I roll.

Ah, what the hell. Two Supernatural epics and that one RPF I said I was gonna do.

1. "And I didn't realize Sam was Sammy."

Dean laughs, the tension leaving him in a rush and he picks up another box to go digging for coffee mugs. "Big brother's prerogative."

He pulls out a pair of mugs, glancing at Dave with a grin. The look of relief on his face is comical, and Dean would chafe at being thought of as Sam's boyfriend except he's chafing at the fact that the dude thinks anyone who had Dean at home would bother to cheat on him.

2. "What's up?" Misha asks, and Jensen looks over at him, too tired to try and figure out what he's talking about. Misha wrinkles his forehead in his "I'm concerned" face and says, "You've been moping all day. Something on your mind?"

Jensen frowns and Misha puts his hands up. "Okay, not moping, fine, if you don't want to talk about it."

Jensen rolls his eyes. Honestly, Misha is the worst.

3. Cas nods. "You don't need to drink or eat, either, but I imagine those habits will be harder to break."

Sam sets the beer down, sighing. There's no point in drinking if he's not even going to get a buzz.

"I, on the other hand," Cas says with a sudden, huge grin that makes him look younger than Kevin, "am what Dean calls 'a lightweight.'"

My personal note: while I'm proud of what I've achieved with this piece, and it's been an interesting process, I don't think it's one of my best, and am only posting a notice here because some of you've mentioned you would like that and also, damn, I'm just so proud I finished this monster.

So, I have this story that I'm posting in chapters.

It's not my usual way of posting, and in fact, I am sort of adamantly against posting in chapters. I know why people do it, but it's not my thing, and I'll tell you why. Well, I'll give you a history of my (accidental) experience and then the pros and cons, for me (which add up to why - along with the fact that as a reader I hate hate HATE WIPs).

History of my accidental serial fic: [personal profile] clavally gave me a prompt which I sat down and wrote about 4500 words for. I posted it, and then asked her to prompt me again. She did. I wrote another 1300 words and posted that as a chapter 2, because I'd worked out the rest of the story and it had an easy four part structure. EASY. Ha ha ha ha, oh, no.

Then Spoilers for SPN S9 ) and I wanted to post something to make myself feel better (and also it'd been a while since I posted), so I cut out and posted a part of Chapter 3 and decided to throw the rest into Chapter 4.

I continued writing Chapter 4 and realized, when it hit about 7k, that it was kind of unreasonable to post it all at once - it'd grown a huge plot and Dean was being recalcitrant, so I threw up about half of it and extended the story to 5 chapters.

Then I was about to get kripked and I realized that the story was just going to be huge, so I needed to reorganize. I shifted things and made it into a 12 chapter thing, re-organizing Chapters 1-4 into Chapters 1-6 and posting two more. Ever since then I've been posting a chapter here and there, every two weeks to a month, mostly before another section of the story got jossed or kripked by canon (this happened six or seven times in the story, which is only fair since it became something of an alt!S9, (on complete accident, I swear!)).

So now I've posted 11/12 chapters and It's been an interesting experience, these last few chapters.

There's a certain awesomeness to being able to write and post almost immediately. I just do a quick readthrough for typos and other little errors, and then put it up. Also awesome has been the hit count and the bookmarks. People keep coming back to it as I post, and that's pretty neat.

Less awesome: If I write myself into a corner, I'm stuck with it. Since I've published the chapter, I have to live with whatever I put in there, so trying to re-write Dean to be less recalcitrant or skip Cas's stupid farewell presents is now impossible because the damn thing's out there already. Probably no one would care but me, but I feel like it's sort of the challenge of writing a serial - you have to live with what came before, even if it was stupid. I suppose it's a little like writing on a TV series, heh.

Awesome side benefit to that: you realllllllly have to think around corners when you do something stupid to yourself. This has been great practice in forcing myself to write creatively to solve problems I would probably have edited out if I was writing straight through.

Other awesome benefits: posting relatively regularly is a nice high and keeps the story fun and fresh and it doesn't have the slogging middle that all my long stories do.

Less awesome: The finished product isn't going to be that good. There's a lot of stuff that I short-cutted because of time and space that really... just isn't very good. Corollary to this less awesome: this is likely to be one of my highest hit count stories ever and it's not particularly good. Considering when I post the epic fics I'm currently working on, it'll take years to get to the hit count I've achieved in six months, that's a bit discouraging.

So yeah, I don't think I'll post any more chaptered fics, but I'm glad I did it - it was an excellent experience. I might try it one more time, purposefully, to see if I can do a better job of it.

And that other meme, where you put up chunks of your unfinished stories.

The sga_santa I *wanted* to write, but got caught in a left turn (will definitely finish this). )
Last Minute Shopping (a gift for mrshamill that I'm going to try to finish, even though sga_santa madness is over). )
Impromptu, of course. )
The one where John's an ER doc. )
The one I keep calling deathfic. )
My first McKeller fix-it type fic. )
Contrary Motion. )
Cambion. )

And a few more little things (as long as we're being thorough).

General writing goals for 2010: 200,000 words published, write something absolutely every day, post at least four stories a month, write better words (throw less away).
Specific writing goals for 2010: finish all stories in my WIP folder, write my Yuletide story, write my NYR for Yuletide, don't sign up for more than one fest at a time, organize/help write a revised season 5 for SGA.
Other goals sort of related to writing for 2010: read more, keep track of books read, do more fic recs, get started with Wii fit and yoga, and start meditating and writing in the mornings before work.
