Day 11: In your own space, make a list of at least 3 things that you like about yourself.

Oh, this is so good. You know, for such a group of lovely, talented people, I see so much doubt and feelings of inadequacy and imposter syndrome. YOU ARE ALL WONDERFUL. Go forth and tell everyone why.

Things about me I like:
1. My enthusiasm. I feel like my enthusiasm is infectious and I love fandom because it can catch fire if you want it enough.
2. My intelligence. Feeling like I need to curb this (and have been my entire life) because I can be a bit overbearing about it (I enjoy being right). Learning that I still need to learn things has been helpful there.
3. My desire to help people. I spend a lot of time helping folks, and it's one of the things I like best about myself.

ETA: Originally posted this directly to the challenge comm, WHOOPS. /o\ See what I mean about #2, there?

kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
And it always makes me pised off (at myself) when people talk about Doylist vs. Watsonian interpretations of anything because I don't know what the fuck they're on about. Anyone want to try and explain this to me in short, simple sentences?
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces. Tell us where you go to dig up canon facts for your fandom, or where you get all the juicy details about your favorite ship. Where do you like to hang out and squee like a squeeing thing?

Apparently, I am starting to realize that I my fandom is actually writing. Because while I love Supernatural, and that is what I'm currently writing, I'm not interested (and wouldn't really be able to) make a list of SPN resources. I can however, make a list of writing tools and comms, which is what I'm going to do.

Tools to get those words out:
ilys.com: write one letter at a time, no backspace or delete (good for those who have issues with being ashamed of what they're writing or who worry about every word as they write it)
750words: write 750 words every day and earn badges
write or die: the original; many settings, including one that untypes your words if you remain idle for too long
write or die 2: haven't played around with this, but presumably even better than the original
written? kitten!: get a kitten for every 100 words written

Comms for motivation/accountability:
[community profile] verbosity: weekly goalsetting comm with daily check-ins
[community profile] thedailywriter: monthly goalsetting comm with ad hoc check-ins (at least monthly)
[community profile] writethisfanfic: support comm with daily-ish general check-ins
write every day: [livejournal.com profile] trobadora hosts a daily writing support group with daily check-ins on her journal
[tumblr.com profile] 1k1h: daily writing challenge to write 1000 words (or as many as you can) in an hour; posts twice daily, at least

Comms for prompts:
[community profile] fan_flashworks: single thematic prompt per 10 days or so (3 per month); also has social posts for chatting with other members at [community profile] ffw_social
[community profile] fic_promptly: prompt community with daily calls for prompts where anyone can fill
[community profile] genprompt_bingo: bingo cards of gen prompts (fills do not need to be gen), prompt lists updated twice per year
[community profile] trope_bingo: bingo cards of trope prompts, two rounds per year
[community profile] 15_minute_ficlets: single word prompt posted on Sundays

There are a million more, but that's enough to be getting on with for today, I think. Feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments! Also, [community profile] write_good is an editing comm (the name is a joke, get it?), love suggestions for more of those!
kate: a hedgehog with a santa cap and candy cane scarf (holiday: Christmas hedgie)
I got SO MUCH cool stuff, you guys, SO MUCH!!!

Everything from gluten-free recipes to lots of cute and fun graphics for season's greetings!

[personal profile] monanotlisa gave me hedgie wallpaper, omg I LOVE, [personal profile] leesa_perrie made a gorgeous and perfect snowed in picspam, and [personal profile] lightbird gave me a lovely Christmas tradition story and set of beautiful snowy pics.

As if that wasn't enough to make me smile to the ends of the earth, a few lovely people made fanworks for me, and they are all so good!

[personal profile] valarltd gave me a lovely 3-work Leverage OT3 rec set (the fic is amaaaaaazing Parker.

[personal profile] lilly_c made me Big Hero 6 icons. (;salfkjsa;dlfkjas;ldkfjs;ldfkj BAYMAX. BAYMAX AND HIRO. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D I AM GRINNING SO BIG HERE!)

[personal profile] tarlanx made a gorgeous Cas & Dean wallpaper. (Ugh, Cassssssssssssssssss and Dean unconscious, just... ugh, so perfect.)

[personal profile] mific expanded upon her Leverage OT3 tentacle art to add a little spicier version. (Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh OT3 + tentacles OMG OMG OMG!!! *claws eyes out*)

[personal profile] omens arted me Jody and Donna having movie night. (;ssdkfljads;lkfjas;ldfkjas;dlkfjs;dlfkj fffffuck, Donna and Jody, I don't think you understand - Wayward Daughters is the only SPN shirt I will wear in public with ABSOLUTELY NO SHAME.)

[personal profile] curiouscorvid's fic Silver Balls is a hysterical outside POV on Destiel decorating the tree naked (off a flailosaurus prompt). SO. ADORABLE. So cute, so much awesome Sam in a Destiel fic. LOooooOOOoooooVE.

[personal profile] parcequelle made a Leverage/Buffy fusion, where Parker's the slayer, Sophie's the watcher, and Eliot and Hardison are the scoobies. The One Girl Job is both amazing in terms of how well the crossover works and also in how sweetly heartwrenching it is in such a short, seemingly silly premise.

I will NEVER not ask for Nightside stuff in [community profile] fandom_stocking because a couple year's back, I got the amazing Teddy Bear's Graveyard about Jessica Sorrow from [archiveofourown.org profile] anonymous_sibyl, and this year, I got a ficlet about John/Suzie/Eddie from [personal profile] katarik where they are SO PERFECTLY DRAWN. HOW DO PEOPLE DO THIS?! I have never received a fanwork in the Nightside fandom that hasn't been amazingly done. And some year, someone is going to make me Dead Boy art, and I will die.

[personal profile] sharpest_asp wrote me the most delightful Jenkins backstory ficlet in the Librarians fandom, and I absolutely looooooove that mostly it is not actually giving us any backstory. It's such delightful characterization, and THE LIBRARIANS!!!! :D :D :D :D

And last, but oooooohhhhhh so not least, [personal profile] citrusjava made me THE MOST PERFECT Wincestiel/Project Runway fusion/crossover/thingee!!! I Know Who You Did Last Summer has Cas making SOCKS. SOCKS. I DON'T THINK YOU UNDERSTAND. *cries* And then Sam losing it and Cas and Dean going after him and just... no. THIS IS PERFECT. *clutches it to chest*

I am so so so so grateful for this fest every year, you guys. I just love making stuff for people (list under the cut, because this post isn't about that), and then I get all this amazing stuff in return, and just seeing the outpouring of fannish joy makes me tear up. Every. Year. *happy siiiiiiiigh*

Stuff I made this year, two podfics and six fics in SGA, Leverage, a Buffy/Heroes crossover, and, of course, Supernatural. )
kate: Aang :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD (AtLA: Aang grinning)
Day 4: In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a Broadway show, a movie, a concert, a poetry reading, a museum trip, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Compose some limericks, haikus, free-form poetry, 5-word stories. Document a particular bit of real person canon. Take some pictures. Draw a stick-figure comic. Create something.

I'm counting the two podfics and six fics I created for [community profile] fandom_stocking here. Reveals aren't until Friday evening, if you're feeling ambitions and want to gift a little something. :D

Day 5: Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

I've been leaving it all over, but here are two pieces that deserve more love, if anyone else is so inclined, both Supernatural: Return by [archiveofourown.org profile] citrusjava, and For the Time Being by [archiveofourown.org profile] De_Nugis

Day 6: In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it.

[community profile] ante_up_losers 2016 Fanwork Exchange is up and running! Sign up now! :D :D :D

Day 7: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I was going to try and do something for Supernatural, and there are a million things I love, but it'd be way to hard to try and do that (and too time consuming), so instead, I'm going to show you my favorite scene from The Losers: embed behind the cut of Chris Evans singing Journey )

Not sure if my favorite part is that he DOES THE ACTUAL DYNAMICS in the line "it goes on and on and on and on," or the little dance move he does in the elevator before the doors close. Or... well, it's probably the Cougar bit at the end. Because Cooooooougar. :D

Day 8: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

Welcome, [personal profile] citrusjava! *smirks at you*

Day 9: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

1. Write 250,000 words this year
2. Post at least 100,000 words this year
3. Post one novella length story at least
kate: The Losers in standard V TV walking formation (Losers: TEAM!)
Yeah, it's coming. Gimme a minute. <3

Okay, so, I'm late. And... having done the assignments already, I know who you are. (sorry!)

So I'm going to keep this sleek and trimmed down, and hopefully give you good ideas. If not - here is my dear creator letters tag and my make this for me tag. I'm super easy, and there has got to be SOMETHING in there that sparks an idea! Also, hit me up in chat and I'll spew things at you until something sticks.

But here, a few prompts and ideas:

1. Losers AUs. Give me the Losers at Hogwarts or on the bridge of the Enterprise or as a Leverage-like team! The Losers with superpowers, the Losers on a tall ship, the losers as pirates or ninjas or cats. Or hedgies or bunnies or elephants! HUNTERS (a la Supernatural) or angels or monsters that fight crime. GIVE ME ALL THE AUs!

2. Canon forks. Roque doesn't betray them! Cougar doesn't die (comics 'verse)! Aisha slots right in as part of the team! The snuke goes off!

3. Ridiculous cute fluff! Cougar takes care of Jensen when he's sick! Clay warms Roque up when he's cold! They all surround Pooch when he misses his wife! Aisha cooks for them all after a tough mission!

4. Cheesy, cheesy tropes! Jensen has amnesia! Cougar and Jensen have to go undercover as gay! Cougar, Roque, and Aisha accidentally adopt a kid! Aisha has an evil twin! Cougar goes through Groundhog Day until Jensen falls in love with him! THE TEAM ARE ALL SOULMATES!!!!

Hopefully that is something to work with. If not, poke me, and I will come up with more. <333
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
Because I use these A LOT in my technical writing, thought it might be useful for others out there.

i.e. = "that is" (or, "in other words")
e.g. = "for example"

Memory trick: Imagine that i.e. means “in essence,” and e.g. sounds like "egg sample."

Also, since I'm thinking of it, American dialogue attribution punctuation/capitalization, which only has a few variations but is something people get endlessly wrong. (For American English, punctuation is always within the quotes. Commas before attribution (she said), periods before non-attribution (actions other than saying, asking, exclaiming, etc.).)

"I say," she said.
"I say!" she exclaimed.
"I say?" she asked.
"I say," she said, "this is ridiculous."
"I say." She turned to me and stuck her tongue out. "This is ridiculous."

Day 3: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Going with all SPN this year, because I don't think I've had the chance to rec myself in that fandom yet, and I really like some of what I've done.

1. The Three Body Problem (36834 words)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Castiel/Dean Winchester/Sam Winchester, Dean Winchester/Sam Winchester
Characters: Castiel, Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester
Summary: Cas asks the Winchesters on a date. Yes, both of them.

This was some big bang or another last year, and it's my first novella-length Wincestiel (there are three more in the works). I just really like it. For a story based on a silly premise it turned out kind of sweet, and I like it.

2. A Brief Sexual History of Dean Winchester (4704 words)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Rape/Non-Con, Underage, Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Castiel/Dean Winchester, Dean Winchester & Sam Winchester, Lisa Braeden/Dean Winchester, Benny Lafitte/Dean Winchester, Dean Winchester/Other(s)

This one is dark, but I just really like it; I feel like it explains the way Dean's bisexuality has been displayed in canon. And yeah, I know he's never stated he's bisexual, but his crush on Dr. Sexy alone tells me that he is not a 0 on the Kinsey scale. I think he's pretty decently in the middle there, but at any rate, I feel like the reasons for this are not entirely pleasant, either, and that's what this story is all about. It's definitely not happy fun times.

3. Third Time's the Charm (7454 words)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Castiel/Sam Winchester
Summary: "So you are virgins. Again."

This was my first Sam/Cas of any length (possibly my first ever?) and I just enjoyed the hell out of it. It was fun and funny and I just really love these two being good to each other.

4. Take the Long Way Home (2410 words)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Dean Winchester & Sam Winchester
Summary: Dean wakes up injured, hurting, and alone. And then his day gets worse.

This is my first try at Gothic horror, and I'm really pleased with how it came out.

5. and everything nice (1348 words)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Castiel/Dean Winchester
Summary: Dean liked the way the pink satin panties felt.

This one could probably have been called A Brief Crossdressing History of Dean Winchester. It's surprisingly angsty and a little sweet, and I had no idea where it was going when I sat down to write it. I love those stories.
kate: Eliot from Leverage, with his mug of coffee, right before he takes down a room in the dark. :) (Leverage: Eliot disguised as Daniel Jack)

Day 2: In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Oh, man, so I have a lot of things I really would like. Here's just a short list:

1. Check in on [community profile] fandom_stocking to see if there are any wishes you can grant? That is one of the other great fannish outpourings of the season. You can post stuff up to and after reveals (January 6).

2. Someone to kick my ass for the next week about my [tumblr.com profile] rarepairbb story that's due on the 10th. I'd love to have an alpha reader/cheerleader for it, too, but they don't have to be the same person. I just need to write the ending and having someone kick my ass/cheerlead would help. (It's Supernatural, Wincestiel, alt!S9 fic.)

3. Leverage OT3 recs? (Parker/Hardison/Eliot)
kate: Sam and Cas hugging (SPN: Sam/Cas happy hug)
DUUUUUUUUUUUDE. This is the best idea EVER. 300 words or a sketch not on lined paper. Plus the ability to write treats. Sign-ups through January 7th.

I'm soooooooooooo easy. )
kate: Single snow covered tree against the blue, blue sky (Snow: tree and blue sky)

Day 1: In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges?

Hmmmm…. *goes back to 2012*

So I think I was just looking for a way to produce some more content on DW, and enthuse about my love for fandom. I love fandom – and not just the fandom of the show I'm currently in, but the WHOLE of fandom. There are so many really awesome people out there willing to help each other out and make things for each other and argue salient (or completely meaningless) details of things they love… I love all the creative energy that exists in fandom, and I love [community profile] snowflake_challenge's attitude, particularly when it tries to subvert imposter syndrome, and makes people stand up and be proud of what they've made. I love seeing young or new fans realize that fandom isn't something they should be ashamed of but something they should be PROUD of – that fandom has given them a way to make things or forge relationships that wouldn't have been possible anywhere else.

Now, 2012 was back at my old job, so I had more time, energy, and enthusiasm than I do now. I still love fandom, by I have to be very careful with where I commit my energy because I can wear myself out, and I have a lot of commitments I need to keep in the air. I will try to finish the whole challenge this year, though.
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
Note from 2012: I've never done one of these before. I'm not a huge reflection type person, normally, but as I get older I find I would like to have this record for... I dunno. Myself, people who might be interested, my family. Whatever.

Note from 2013: I'm not fond of a lot of this meme. I'm terrible at reflection so I'm not sure I'll actually switch out a lot of these questions, but hopefully I will, a few at a time, until I come up with a better set for the yearly review.

Note from 2014: I almost didn't do this one this year, I really hate it. If anyone has suggestions for a better one, link in the comments?

Note from 2015: Here we go again. Still hate some of the questions, not much changes from year to year in a fair number of these categories.

Cut, maybe for length, if I get talkative, or think of better questions. )
kate: Katara smiling (AtlA: Katara smiley)
Here's to an excellent 2016 for you and yours. I foresee a lot of Rock Band IV in mine, if my yearly review is any indication. :)
kate: Single lit white pillar candle (Candle: single lit white pillar cnadle)
January: Starting 2015 on the couch, watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and eating lucky sauerkraut
February: Owwwwwwwwwwww.
March: *looks around*
April: Hallo everyone!
May: Is spoiler etiquette not a thing any more?
June: Rough times.
July: Fucking hell.
August: Fuck, I really hate writing advice.
September: 30 days of fandom from [personal profile] escritoireazul
October: Warning: discussion of sick pet
November: Kitty/life update
December: SO MANY THINGS

Note from 2012: I think that what we've learned from this is that my subject lines are not particularly useful in this sort of meme.

Note from 2013: Better - and also kind of embarrassing.

Note from 2014: I think we're back to 2012, where I realize I just don't use the subject lines for descriptive information or anything fun or interesting, though November was pretty great.

Note from 2015: Wow, this post reminded me that 2015 can fucking SUCK IT. At least 2016 can't be any worse.
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
Damn it, I never wanted to be that person. It's happened a while ago, before tumblr, even, and to be honest, I'm not there as much as I was before, either.

I still love DW, and it's still my most beloved platform, my internet experience has just sort of shifted again, you know? How are you engaging with the internet, my dwircle? Are you still mostly here? Or elsewhere? Or everywhere?

It's almost time to do the year-end retrospectives, so you'll get a flurry of posts here, and then it'll be time for [community profile] snowflake_challenge again, which YAYYYYYYYYY that is my favorite time of year!

Also, [community profile] fandom_stocking goes into January again, so if you have time and inclination, head on over there to stuff a few stockings? Here is my stocking - if you have a stocking, drop a link in the comments? <333

Oh - and it's writing comm times again. I do two every year )
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
Okay, I'm at work, and technically in the middle of a work sprint (in which I have so far gotten Starbucks and lunch and looked at [community profile] fandom_stocking) but THESE THINGS NEED TO BE SAID.

1. TEAM VELOCIRAPTOR GOT INTO THE GISHWHES BOOK - TWICE! :D :D :D I will post pics eventually, but I am SO EXCITE! Especially cause there's a picture of my mom in one of the entries. :)

2. [community profile] fandom_stocking is live! Submit your stocking here. Fandom stocking is one of my great, fannish, winter loves. It's brilliant. I'll be writing my stocking tonight and then starting to look for stockings I can fill.

3. SPN midseason finale tonight. I have a bad feeling my Sam feels will be engaged to the nth degree.

4. Work is... interesting. More on that later, maybe.

5. ??? What's up with you, dwircle?
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
Sorry I disappeared like that. Things have been nuts over here.

So first, kitties! Fatty is much better. Pretty much all the issues he had are gone, he's eating regularly and chasing Weebl and going in the litter box and everything is working like planned.

Jeeves is... well. Diabetic. We're giving him 4 units of insulin per day, which is just crazy. But, he's also pretty much back to normal, so the kitty household feels back on an even keel. THANK THE GODS.

I, on the other hand, have had a huge work shake-up that... is good? Really good, I think, but still makes me nervous. I'm gonna blather about it under here for a while - I think this is cut for length but you never know. )

And that's all the news that's fit to print. What's up with you guys? *goes to check the dwircle*
kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
I was just looking through some old entries, looking for a gluten-free brownie recipe someone'd given me, and I found this meme. I thought I'd do it again, just to see how different the numbers are from the entry back in 2013. Code at the end if you want to play along. :)

Statistics! I luuuuurve them! )

Text box with html for those who want to play along. )

Good news!

kate: Kate Winslet is wryly amused (Default)
Fatty is now eating and drinking on his own! \o/ Still force feeding for a while, probably, but shouldn't be long.

Jeeves is another matter. )

Other than that, things are okay. Thank you all so much for your good thoughts, it means an incredible amount to me, you don't even know. <333
