It's bad movie weekend! :D
4/14/12 11:20 amNo phone call yet. It's out of my mind until Monday. (I will just say: I've decided that for every day they've delayed, it's to add another few thousand onto my base salary. Pretty soon I'll be expecting an offer for $200k.)
Last night we saw Lockout. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 32% (audience liked it at 56% - I am surprised that's so low, honestly, our crowd seem to enjoy it immensely). IT WAS AMAZING. And horrible. I just... wtaf, that was the most confused thing ever. Guy Pearce doing Hugh Jackman (and well - he looked amazing and his American accent was amazing) and Maggie Grace doing Charlize Theron (also well! She was tough. Distractingly pretty, but still tough.)
The vehicular parts were absolute garbage. The chase seen in the beginning was completely awful, and also I think, sped up in the editing process. Nearly unwatchable. Luckily short.
The "romance" stuff? Actually awesome. A few groan-worthy parts, but the best part is the end, where they did NOT do the "naw, kiss and be beautiful in the sunset together" thing. AWESOME. Seriously, the snark was amazing throughout, also the love taps. Guy Pearce is so awesome in this, guys, seriously - and Maggie Grace is also awesome, though the writing for her character was less consistent.
The main villain was doing Gerard Butler, surprisingly well. The guy who played the president was doing Dennis Hopper reasonably well. The annoying asshole good guy was doing Ciarán Hinds appreciably well and the good guy who was on Guy Pearce's good side was doing Don Cheadle extremely well. Guy Pearce's sidekick did a respectable Edward Norton.
The acting was all hilariously spot on - terribly amusing - but the script was crap. The CG (
soleta tells me, as I can't tell) was crap. The science was OH-SO-CRAP. There were race issues (and if I noticed, they were probably huge - but at least all the convicts were white) and gender issues (two women, and one was fridged almost immediately). It felt like a script written by a white dude who is just starting to realize that he needs to pay attention to things like how he writes women (and is probably patting himself on the back for how ~awesome~ he made Maggie Grace) and totally didn't notice the racial issues at all. Baby steps?
... Back after a little research with this: the original idea was by Luc Besson (who has some awesome ideas - Fifth Element, anyone?), but the screenplay was written by an unknown and a dude with very little talent (and they directed it, too - and that, I think was the big mistake).
But the actors, man! They were ~amazing~. Totally worth the price of a ticket.
And now we are watching Bunraku. Rotten Tomatoes has it at a lowly 16%, with audience enjoyment at 51%. I am truly enjoying this movie! We rented it because we could not believe who was in it. Josh Hartnett, Gackt, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Ron Perlman (Ron Perlman was the one that made me realize it was a bad!ficmovie). It was one of those you look at and just know it is bad, and wonder why these actors decided to be in it, you know?
So there are REALLY interesting visual elements to this - I am totally enjoying the incredible amount of paper work (reminiscent of the Three Brothers part of Harry Potter) and the color (such pretty colors!), the comic book art direction, the costuming straight out of Dick Tracy! There is interesting mishmash of ideas: a musical number-like opening fight scene - extremely choreographed, with voiceover, fascinating! I was gleefully clapping my hands! and a video game chase scene, and A TRAPEZE FIGHT. No lie. Unfortunately, too many ideas, which is probably why it was panned - it's a bit of a confused jumble. Also, the basic concept for the world (explained in voiceover in the first minute or two) is completely flawed. But I can go with it.
The problem that's really getting to me, though, is that there are reeeeeally skeevy gender issues in this one. I have no idea why Demi Moore signed on to this. Maybe the concept - it is really interesting. I can see how you might have high hopes for it. But the virgin/whore dichotomy is huge. There are only two named women, one Gackt's cousin (the virgin, obvs) and Demi, who is the whore. Then there are the huge other amounts of women - all in one scene, all of whom are whores. All of them. Oh, wait - there were dancing girls in one scene too. *headdesk* That is the only thing that is putting me off this. Ah wait - one of the killers is a lady! Just one, but it's better than nothing.
There are probably cultural issues too, there's a whole thing with Gackt's part of the story that makes me look at it sideways, but I don't really have a feel for what the issues are, as I'm not very well versed in that? It just feels skeevy. So this one, while it is visually stunning, is problematic to a degree that is lessening my pleasure so much that I can't actually rec it despite the problems.
As always, keep in mind I have a love for bad movies. I enjoy them immensely just for the badness, so that's always something to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to watch the movies from my recs/reviews.

on 4/14/12 07:47 pm (UTC)I haven't seen any of these, but I'm probably going to rent them now. :D
I've got a bad habit of getting a lot of third rate English, Spanish, and Bollywood movies based off how terrible the covers looks. I'd like to pretend I have enough class to check rotten tomatoes first, but I'd be lying.
Three men holding RPG's in a flaming muscle car while a woman swoons across the bottom? Cheesy smiles and giant pink hearts over two people being physically restrained by their friends (I hope?) while cupid looks on smugly? A goat standing on a cliff? JUST TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY. For the most part, they do not disappoint in their insanity and use of airsoft guns in place of real guns. :D

on 4/14/12 09:01 pm (UTC)Also, Lockout is in theaters - opened yesterday - so you can actually see it on the big screen! It's not a truly bad movie, it's just not a good movie. I'm always willing to shell out bucks for Guy Pearce, so it was a given for us. Totally worth it, too, so much to delight in, and so much fun to laugh at.
Somehow I knew you'd like bad movies. God, they're so much fun! :D :D :D
Also, that picture of Óscar in your icon - where did it come from? God, he looks amazing!

on 4/14/12 09:49 pm (UTC)I made the icon from a picture of Jaenada from his photo-shoot for Babylon magazine. <33 It's all eye candy, bby~
Bad movies have been a favorite of mine since I first saw Mystery Science Theater 3000. I was hooked. <3

on 4/15/12 01:10 am (UTC)My own rec: Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter. It's not horror, but it's bad in that way that is OH SO GOOD. (Speaking of that, the trailer I saw for Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter looks to be an excellent bad-good movie of the same stripe (oh oh oh! and The Raven (with John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe, ha) as well!).)
