ETA: Thanks, Texas Republican Party for fucking that right up.

Damn it.

Texas is the one place I have never had any desire to visit. And they just keep reinforcing that lack of desire by being a bunch of fuckheads.

I've heard nice things about Texas, too. One of my room mates was from Texas, and she was awesome. But when my uncle's wife (who I generally dislike to begin with) suggested at Christmas that I *move* there (I don't know what prompted her to decide that I need to move anywhere at all) I reacted with actual, visceral horror.

I mean...Texas. Why would I ever want to leave my nice, comfortable blue(ish) state and move to Texas? No. Just no. If I go anywhere, I'm going somewhere on the opposite end of the spectrum from Texas. I already did the living-in-the-south thing, and the pride parade was absolutely pitiful! I can't survive in that sort of environment!

Whatevs, constant summer is awesome. If I never shovel snow another day in my life, I will be happy, and I will thank every 100° high for the reprieve. Just relax on the porch with a mojito and revel in it.

I agree. What I hate about Southern summers, though (especially when you get down to Arkansas and Louisiana) is the humidity. OMG, air should not be wet. Still better than Alaska's negative-freaking-unreasonable winter temps, though.

Humidity is annoying, but I still think it's better than the alternative. That "dry heat" nonsense that desert people talk up is dreadful; it feels like you're being baked. I'd much rather steam.

The one thing I like about dry heat, though, is that I can sit under a shady tree and not feel like I'm going to die (as much). You can't escape humid heat with anything but some ice, a fan, and/or lots of swimming in rivers.

I don't the downside to any of that.

The AC at my apartment sucks something fierce (I so need to find a new place), so it's mostly fans and various states of undress.

If the fans and ice aren't enough, then I go to the library or wherever there is free Wi-Fi and blessed air conditioning. These past few days haven't been too terrible because of the rain (yay rain). Ugh, but I know that all that moisture is going to make the humidity unbearable.

*laughs* And I'm just the opposite. Cold temperatures were awesomesauce when I lived in Alaska but now? No can do. I think it's because I have really poor circulation, so I always lose feeling in my fingers (even with gloves) when winter comes around.

Ohmigosh I know. I hate summer right now, but I hate it much less than I hated summer in New Orleans when the air conditioning was broken in my apartment, which had windows that DID NOT OPEN. The horror!

A friend of mine recently moved to Arizona (I can not fathom why) and he said it was 110 there today. 110! NO THANK YOU.

Texas is crazy. There a few spots here and there worth visiting, a boardwalk along a river and some clurbs and a whole bunch of nice people worth meeting, but there's also so much nothing. Sulfur-scented, arid, empty, pointless nothing, and it's the nothing that has the majority.

Doe v. Reed was decided today (or yesterday, whatevs), a case in which anti-gay activists in Washington State failed to argue that releasing the names of petitioners behind an ballot measure against gay partnership benefits would violate their first amendment rights. The decision doesn't have much impact—it mostly comes down to states rights, though Scalia did get to call the plaintiffs a bunch of pussies—but I think the premise does. The whole basis of the challenge was that those who signed the petition would be subject to discrimination, having been revealed as opposing an extension of the benefits of marriage to gay and lesbian couples. And besides, R-71 ended up confirming the domestic partnership law 53-47.

There's still a long way to go, but I see some progress in there being a fear of being seen as a bigot, and in Justice fucking Scalia thinking you're a coward for expecting hateful speech, though free, to be free of consequence. Things still suck, I agree, but things are getting better. Have hope.

Yeah, I saw this yesterday (it pretty much made me SICK) - but without the link to send the fb to the RNC...which I now have. Maybe it will help. Surely the RNC will have some influence and enough intelligence to understand how truly fucked up the Texas Republican Party platform is? At least I hope so. :( But. Sadly, the state of Texas is holding my sister and nephews hostage. :( It galls me quite a bit that I visit there as frequently as I do just to see my family. *sigh* The things you do for love.

*clings to you*

And this is yet another reason why I refuse to live in Texas, even if Austin is nice.

Fuck you, too, Texas.

Oh good, I'm glad you spread the word, too; my flist isn't very big so I don't actually know how many people I was able to reach with that post...unless you read it elsewhere, first. But either way, good on you for sharing. *hugs*

The minute I saw this on my friend's LJ last night, I read it to my husband, signed it myself, posted it in my FB as a link, and then posted here, crossposting to my LJ. Absolutely offensive. *shakes head*
